Ranking the Star Wars films

I don’t think that the politics in and of themselves were an inherently bad decision. In the hands of another director it could’ve been very interesting. The “it’s called Star WARS” argument has always felt kind of reductive and trite to me (not meant to be a shot at you or your post, suspiciouscoffee). But anyway, the performances, the direction, the writing, the tone, and the CG-as-first-resort approach to the effects about covers it for me. I go through phases of weird fascination with them and their place in the larger SW universe so I’m unwilling to completely ignore/reject them like a lot of folks here, but I’d never call them good or even successful movies.

. . . less ridiculous scenes . . .

Well that’s a relief. For a while I was worried that Obi-Wan Kenobi riding an annoying squawking lizard, Ian McDiarmid’s swordsmanship, everything out of Yoda’s mouth, Padmé dying of a broken heart, every single scene with Grievous, mentioning that Qui-Gon is a Force ghost rather than omitting that information or showing him as a Force ghost, “UNLIMITED POWAH!”, and Chewbacca’s friendship with Yoda might be ridiculous.

Also, I listened to the score again and I still don’t get what the big deal is. It’s all bombast for the sake of bombast.

I cannot stop watching Pierrot le fou. I threw it on last week for the first time in years, fully expecting it to be one of those things that blow your mind when you’re 20 but don’t work nearly as well once you’ve got some distance from that initial viewing. I’ve watched it three times since then and I think I’m more in love with it than I was in college. Certainly not for everyone, but if you like the flavor of this trailer, I give it a glowing recommendation.

Well the only difficult part with a mac is making an ISO out of it, then it’s just a matter of burning through disc utility.

I just recently had the unfortunate realization that the bluray drive I bought around december is actually only a bluray READER and can only burn DVDs. Whoops. So I’m now on the search for a comparable-priced mac compatible bluray BURNER. Always read the fine print guys.

Can’t speak to the “comparable price” bit because I’m not sure what you spent in the first place, but this guy here’s been treating me fine since September: http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-External-Blu-ray-SE-506CB-RSBD/dp/B00JJGFRIQ/ref=sr_1_3?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1458761257&sr=1-3&keywords=external+blu+ray+writer

I was using imgburn with wine on my Mac for a while and while it worked to make ISOs, it wasn’t able to find my disc drive. I tend to just make the disc image in tsmuxer or imgburn and burn it with the OSX disk utility. When I first got my external blu-ray burner it was failing every time so I would bring the ISOs over to an old Windows laptop and use the software that came with the drive, but I updated the software on my Mac semi-recently and since then disk utility handles blu-ray just fine.

Episode VIII : The Last Jedi - Discussion * <strong><em>SPOILER THREAD</em></strong> *

don’t you think he should have spares lying around?

Not really, at least not identical ones. We’ve seen that there doesn’t seem to be a standard issue Knight of Ren helmet, everything looks to be either scavenged or custom built. If Kylo found his helmet somewhere, then I doubt he’d have another one just like it, and if he built it, it would be a bad narrative choice to have him craft a new one that’s exactly the same as the old one after he’s lost it in this life changing experience. I think it’s possible he’ll end up with something very similar, especially if it was an existing piece that he repurposed rather than something he forged himself, but I think it will be tweaked to some extent. Think of all the variations of Mandolorian armor we’ve seen. He could come back with something that’s clearly from the same culture or order or whatever, but pretty obviously not the exact same object.

Foreign films as a language learning aid

Wonderful, thanks a lot. I think I’ll probably take a look at those with the subs sooner rather than later, but the idea is to do it without them when I’ve hit the point where my French is pretty good. I read somewhere that as a rule of thumb, if you know the 2,000 most commonly occurring words in a given language, you can make sense of about 70-80% of a lot of films in that language. This is really a next-step idea I plan to pursue some months from now, I just thought I’d get a jump on making a list now.

Episode VIII : The Last Jedi - Discussion * <strong><em>SPOILER THREAD</em></strong> *
Time

This belongs in one of potentially four different threads, so apologies if I’ve chosen poorly, but anyway: do we think JJ’s weak-ass explanation of why R2 booted up when he did and had the map might have just been spoiler prevention for VIII? I think it would make a lot more sense if it turns out that Luke gave part of the map to Lor San Tekka intending to have him to give it to Rey and send her to Leia when the time was right, and programming R2, whom he’d given the rest of the map, to come back online when Rey shows up wherever R2 is (presumably with Leia). That’s so much better than saying BB-8 jostled R2 back online and it just took a while for his system to load, and that he downloaded the map when he was plugged into the Death Star in IV. I’m hoping this is revealed with some sort of “how did you find me?” exchange between Luke and Rey early in the next film.

Foreign films as a language learning aid
Time

Hey folks, this might sound a little bit convoluted, but bear with me.

I’ve always had a desire to learn a second language, but being an ugly American, I’ve never had the resolve to make it happen. I blame both myself for not pursuing it more aggressively in school as well as school itself for failing to make it attractive, but that’s all beside the point. Anyway, the French edition of Rosetta Stone has been sitting neglected in my applications folder for years now, but I’ve fired it up again this week because my family is planning a trip to Italy and France around Christmas time, and with the concrete goal in mind of not being totally clueless come December, I think I might be able to stick with it this time.

Now, the point of the thread. Given where I live and who I associate with day to day, I’m not likely to have much opportunity to practice anything I pick up in real conversation, but I’ve always heard that while it’s far from a perfect substitute, there is a lot of value in watching as many movies and TV shows as you can without any subtitles once you’ve grown your vocabulary past a certain point. As I’ve said, I just started this week and I’m a long way off from that, but I think it wouldn’t be a bad idea to start trying to come up with some French films to seek out if or when I get there. My knowledge of French cinema doesn’t extend too far beyond the French New Wave, and while I love Godard and Truffaut, their dialogue is difficult even in English translation. I thought, then, that I might as well ask this gang of multinational cinephiles if they can recommend any French movies or television with reasonably straightforward language that I can file away for some point down the road.

So how about it? Can any of you point me in a good direction for this? And if it so happens I’m not the only one here with this rather specific interest, feel free to request or recommend media in whatever other languages you may be interested in learning.

What other spinoffs should Disney make?
Time

I feel like I’m losing my mind reading this prequel discussion. I get wanting a PT reboot, but believing that it’s something that’s reasonably possible is delusional. In the year and a half or so since Disney threw out all the Legends stuff (and ignoring the fact that the PT and TCW were kept 100% official canon), the nuEU has made a point of creating tons of links and ties from the PT to the OT and beyond. It’s a load-bearing element in the continuity, and it’s only becoming more entrenched. I know a lot of you aren’t interested in that stuff and that you’d rather have new prequels, but it should be clear from the fact that Disney is producing this material that they’re not on the same page. We’re in a bubble here, and it’s easy to think the priorities the denizens of this board share are the norm across the fan base, but go look at the Cantina forum. Look at TFN, even though they’re awful. Hell, look at Tumblr. There’s plenty of PT conversation going on, and it isn’t all about how much they suck by a long shot. And there’s a massive TCW following. I cannot see Disney, with all this goodwill from TFA, turning around and alienating that sizable segment of fans by saying, “we’re going to redo that thing you like because those angry guys over there on the other side of the internet feel like they got shafted seventeen years ago”. It’s true that most people don’t like the prequels, but it’s also true that most of those people apart from the obsessive fans have moved on and are just excited about the ST. And those casual fans are where the numbers are. This is a special interest. Maybe fifteen or twenty years down the line I can see them splitting the continuity a la JJ’s Trek films (although please, damn it, no time travel), but I find it impossible to believe that it’s even on Disney’s radar for anywhere in the near future.

I think we can put the funeral rumors to bed, unless Corellian funerals are a lot more fun than Earth ones: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-3494170/Star-Wars-Episode-VIII-films-aboard-mega-yacht-coast-Dubrovnik-Croatia-sign-film-s-main-stars.html

It looks to me like this is some kind of society event. I’d been leaning in that direction anyway since there are almost as many white costumes as black ones. Looks more like evening wear than mourning garb.

I’ve mentioned it before, but I’ve got a definite idea in my head of how the Fett movie should go. Aftermath showed some Jawas in possession of a battered set of Mandalorian armor that was heavily implied to be Boba’s. I’d like to see some young guy purchase it and start posing as Fett. Unbeknownst to him him, though, the real Fett survived the Sarlacc and is now on his trail. It could be like a SW No Country for Old Men if done well. It might even be cool to end it in such a way that we aren’t sure which one wins out, so that we’re always wondering who’s in the suit whenever Boba Fett shows up again afterward.
