"Lucasfilm currently has no plans to release the original versions of Star Wars"
Time

I sometimes feel like hating Lucasfilm is more important for some people here than actually getting a proper OUT release, to the point where some folks seem to be actively rooting against it so they can have a reason to maintain their animosity. Bitterness towards the company seems like a bigger motivator than love for the films.

Meh. His technique’s solid I guess (though those are some crooked-ass towers, but I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt since I’m not familiar with the actual castle and it could be a Leaning Tower of Pisa situation), but the painting is boring as all hell. Picasso, Matisse, Modigliani, etc. were all active around the same time. Hitler the artist was basically the early 20th century equivalent of Thomas Kinkade, minus the success.

This is getting pretty far off topic, of course, but if my art history degree doesn’t entitle me to take a few shots at Hitler’s painting when the subject arises, I fear it’s truly worthless (Lord knows it hasn’t been useful in finding a job).

[fill in the blank] Just Died!
Time

I’m seeing a lot of conflicting stories, but it looks as though Prince has likely died at the age of 57. I guess he’s had a serious flu for a few weeks and was briefly hospitalized last Friday.

As if the prospect of living in a world without Bowie wasn’t already bad enough.

EDIT: A few of the articles I saw that confirmed his death now seem to have been walked back. Someone died at Prince’s estate today, and we know that Prince was in poor health, so I’m not fantastically hopeful. I’d love to be proven wrong, though.

EDIT2: The Associated Press is reporting it, I guess it’s for real. God damn it. Good night, sweet Prince.

Today I finished The New and Improved Romie Futch by Julia Elliott, which was excellent. Sort of a Flannery O’Connor meets Philip K. Dick meets George Saunders experience. Glowing recommendation.

Just now I started Bend Sinister by Vladimir Nabokov.

Speaker For The Dead by Orson Scott Card. Read it a few years back and loved it. However, nowadays I’m seeing a lot of people online saying it’s “sexist” or that “Ender is Hitler”. This isn’t a new thing, but it’s something I’ve only recently really noticed or paid attention to. Anyway, I’m going to read Speaker again to see for myself if any of these seemingly ludicrous claims actually hold any water.

I believe the backlash against Card has more to do with comments that he’s made in the media recently than with any particular work of his.

Godzilla series (Rank 'em, rate, whatever, etc).
Time

Watched a few of these over the weekend, thinking about trying to get through the entire catalog (I’ve seen about a third of them, but it’s been a very long time apart from the ones I just watched). I’m grading these against each other, meaning regardless of how they stack up against any other movies, an A+ is the original Gojira and an F is anything with Godzilla’s doofy son in it.

Godzilla, King of the Monsters!: C+
Mothra vs. Godzilla: A-
Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster: B+
Godzilla 1985: B-
Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla II: C+

The only other two I’ve watched recently enough to be able to rate them were Gojira (A+ on this scale) and the 2014 Godzilla (a B). I plan on working my way through these in the next few months, so I’ll give updates as I go.

Also, was this guy in TFA, or is this a new character?

He was in TFA. I believe he was piloting an X-Wing…

Actually I’m pretty sure he was at the Resistance base during the battle. He had a couple lines about how many ships they were losing. might have been a different color, but definitely the same species at least.

God, that comments section is depressing. Some guy wrote a lengthy thing about how this is pointless because the 2006 discs are available and he doesn’t see how it could possibly get any better than that. And, of course, the sadly predictable deluge of “you guys need to get out of the basement and get a life/girlfriend” jabs and weirdly misplaced TFA sexism. Stay gold, internet.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier

Marvel’s best so far.

A

I much preferred the first one. Something about Winter Soldier's pacing made it impossible for me to settle into it.

I did end up watching Ghidorah, by the way. This might be my favorite one so far. The crazy Mothra music videos and the scene with the monsters arguing and the fairy twins translating were so epically, joyously goofy.

I’ve been on a huge Godzilla kick this weekend for whatever reason. I bought a Showa-era box set and found a couple Heisei-era films on obscure streaming services. I really didn’t have much familiarity with the Heisei series at all; the Showa films were the ones that were always on TV when I was growing up and until now I’d never had much desire to explore the franchise further. I’m definitely going to be taking a look at more of the Heisei stuff now, though. They’re so delightfully weird but played completely straight. Anyway, the ones I’ve watched the last few days are:

Godzilla, King of the Monsters!, 1956 (American edit of Gojira) - This one is indisputably inferior to the original Japanese version, but it’s far from the unwatchable travesty a lot of people make it out to be. The addition of the Raymond Burr scenes is clumsy and unnecessary, but strange enough to be kind of interesting.

Mothra vs. Godzilla, 1964 (Japanese version) - This was my favorite as a kid and it holds up as well as can be expected. The score leans a little too heavily on the Godzilla theme from earlier movies, but the original material is great. The whole business with the fairy twins adds some cool mythology and really opens up the world more than any of the previous films had. Also, I think this might be Godzilla’s last appearance as a villain until the Heisei series.

Godzilla 1985, 1985 (American edit of The Return of Godzilla) - The first film in the Heisei series, this is one of the few from that era that I saw as a child, and even then it struck me as bizarre that the Japanese characters were dubbed but the Russians were subtitled. This one was recut for its US release just like the original; an Orson Welles-looking Raymond Burr even came back for additional scenes. The design and effects here have a cool look and the pacing’s a little better than many of the Showa movies, but in terms of story it’s exactly the same as every other Godzilla reboot. I can’t blame it for that since this is the first, but it had an effect on my enjoyment nonetheless.

Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla II, 1993 (Japanese version) - This is a weird one. One of the protagonists’ only real character trait is that he’s super into pteranodons, another character is recruited from what seems to be a telekinesis and telepathy school, which is portrayed as a totally normal thing, a group of schoolgirls sing creepy choral music to a baby Godzillasaurus for no real reason, etc. Real 1990s Japan stuff. But hey, Rodan was in this one, so thumbs up.

I might fire up Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster later tonight. One thing about this box set that’s kind of disappointing is that only the Japanese cuts seem to be restored; the American versions I’ve looked at so far all had abysmal transfers. These are probably the only movies in the world I’d prefer to watch dubbed, mostly for nostalgia purposes. I’m considering taking a crack at recutting the footage from the Japanese versions to match the American soundtracks.

Harmy's STAR WARS Respecialized Edition '97 - AVCHD and MKV Released
Time

I think I remember saying this in another thread, but a respecialized ROTJ would be almost identical to the HDTV SE. I’m pretty sure the only changes between the 1997 and 2004 versions are ghost Hayden, the Naboo shot in the celebration montage, and the insertion of the Jedi temple from the PT in the background of the Coruscant shot.

As for ESB, Adywan’s 1997 reconstruction does the trick.

EDIT: Excuse my ignorance guys, but could it be they’re really going to screen the 97’SE, though converted to digital?

Could be that new 4K scan that no one seems to know much about. Correct me if I’m wrong, but I think scanning the 1997 cut would have to be the first step towards any sort of ultra high def SE since the 2004 and 2011 changes were done with the 2K Lowry master. Maybe Alamo’s showing the new master before Disney reinstates the post-'97 changes (if in fact they even plan to)?
