Movies Seen In Theaters From Before You Were Born
Time

Let’s see…

-Lawrence of Arabia (three times; twice DCP, once 70mm)
-Sleeping Beauty (70mm)
-From Russia With Love (35mm)
-Amadeus (DCP with live orchestra)
-Breathless (DCP)
-Metropolis (DCP)
-Jaws (35mm)

And that’s honestly all I can think of right now, but there may be a couple more. I’ve got to get out there more, I used to be a lot better about this stuff.

I tried to see it at the same series where I saw the Lawrence print, but it was sold out.

Dom, can I assume we both saw Jaws at the Somerville Theater’s annual screening?

What do we know about the little frog guy who eats the other creature outside Jabba’s palace right after Leia and Chewie show up? Is he a muppet? Stop motion? Traditional animation? Before I got into these preservations, when I hadn’t seen the OOT in like 15 years, I assumed he was an SE addition because the quality of his movement is so different from all the other puppets, but now having seen the GOUT and the ROTJ grindhouse and knowing that he’s from '83, I have no idea how they actually did it.

That’s exactly it, it’s the lighting in the scene. I have no trouble recognizing him from the “The shield doors must be closed,” scene to the “Everybody to your stations, let’s go!” scene, it’s just that the mustache seems to disappear for that one bit with Han.

Anyway, anyone else see this?

I just bought the LP reissues of the OT soundtracks on that snappy gold vinyl from Barnes & Noble so I doubt I’ll go for these right away. Hopefully it’s a harbinger of more rereleases to come. I dare not hope for the OUT, but at least maybe they’ll finally retire those awful 2011 discs.

The crazy thing is I’ve known it was him in his other two scenes for years, I just was so sure they tauntan-will-freeze guy didn’t have a mustache that my mind was incapable of making the connection. Between this and finally spotting the praying mantis in the cantina in Star Wars for the first time, this has been an eventful pre-TLJ blu-ray watch through.

I must have seen The Empire Strikes Back several hundred times by now, and I only just noticed that the “your tauntaun will freeze before you reach the first marker” guy has a weird flesh-colored mustache. It’s not Ratzenberger, is it? For my entire life I thought “of course it’s not Ratzenberger, Ratzenberger has a mustache.” My whole world has been turned upside-down.

All right, Mary Sue may not be the right designation given the fact that he ultimately does biff it pretty hard. But I found it pretty obnoxious that Stackpole’s original character, who up to that point didn’t show up anywhere outside his own books except for a pretty minor role in Zahn’s Hand of Thrawn, is painted as this all-around cool guy who rules the school on Yavin, is best friends with Luke Skywalker (seemingly out of nowhere if you haven’t read Stackpole’s other stuff), has comebacks and zingers snappier than Han’s, and is the one who takes on the high stakes single combat at the end. These were my first Stackpole books, and not being terribly familiar with the character, my constant thought was “who the hell is this guy that this book clearly thinks I care deeply about already for some reason?”. It felt like Stackpole derailed the whole thing just to make it about his guy.

I’ve got an idea I’ve been kicking around for a year or so for black comedy where someone finds a human tooth in their meal at a fancy dinner party and it’s a catalyst for all of the decorum and social niceties gradually breaking down completely. It’s heavily influenced by Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, and I’d probably shoot it in 1.85:1 and black and white to help achieve that vibe. I actually recently purchased a new Canon DSLR that could probably handle it, so maybe I’ll start working on it in earnest some time soon.

BLUE MILK:

250ml Milk
Tbsps fat free yoghurt
ripe banana, mashed
A few drops of natural blue food colouring
tsp of honey to sweeten

Add the milk, banana, yoghurt and honey to your blender. Wizz till combined.

Add a few drops of natural blue food colouring to get the correct colour. Stir well. Very Well.

I prefer the boozy variant, which is basically just a White Russian with blue curaçao instead of kahlua. Tastes like an orange creemsicle.

Similar to Handman’s news, I got an interview for a job at a museum today. Well, more of a historical society, but still. Here’s hoping I get to leave my dull-as-hell QC job and finally put that art history degree to work as a collections and event photographer at REDACTED.

Hey, you’re in QC too? I actually like my QC job. What field? I’m in thermoplastics/PVC.

We do calibration standards and control solutions for medical diagnostic instruments. It’s not a bad job at all, but I’m pretty psyched for a chance to get back to career plan A.

<strong>STAR WARS: REBELS</strong> (animated tv series) - a general discussion thread

Maul is introduced towards the end of S2. There’s definitely stuff before that you need, but it’s pretty episodic so it’s easy to pick and choose. I’d recommend trying to find a list of essential episodes somewhere. Some of the inquisitor stuff shouldn’t be skipped, but you might not need all of it.

It should be noted that I haven’t rewatched the show since it originally aired, so I could be off base here. This is just my years-later recollection of it.

The new Star Wars comics - a general discussion thread
Time

I’m months behind on all of these, I really need to spend a weekend catching up sometime soon. Anyone up to date? What should I prioritize?

EDIT: Also, I read a few more issues of the new Darth Vader since my last post and I’ve been pleasantly surprised. Much like with the Kanan comic, I’m finding that prequel-era settings aren’t as much of a deal breaker as I keep expecting them to be.
