CGI and Digital or Real models and actors-whats your prefferance.?
Time
Mary-Kate and Ashly both do act the same. They both suck. I say the effects in Attack of the Clones were far better then the ones in Lord of the Rings. I honestly couldn't tell the clones were digital until someone told me. They fooled me. Everything look perfectly liflike. Look at Walking with Dinosaurs. The digital dinosaurs looked better then the puppets they used for close ups. Sometimes the dinos were half digital and half puppet and I honestly couldn't tell the difference. This movie amazed me that such excellent effects could be done for a 1999 television project. Don't get me wrong before digital technology came around I had no problem with live action effects. I am still a fan of Ray Harryhousans work. Today however computers have got to the point were you can put anything on screen in 100% photorealism. After seeing Final Fantasy I believe that actors days are numbered.

The Prequels are not any more kids movies then the originals. You oviously forgot the ewoks. They seem very adult don't they. There no more mature then Jar Jar. The Naboo Starfighters looked way way better the the originals X-wings. Also like Shimarra said the shinny digital look of the prequals is meant to show the happy age of Star Wars. Attack of the Clones feel was much more close to the originals then The Phantom Menace was and in Episode 3 Lucas is giving it an even more 70s dirty look. Its a progressive and evolutionary process. Attack of the Clones is a masterpiece. It has a beautiful story, beautiful effects, and a beautiful girl. Attack of the Clones is what movies are about. It combines story with action in such a seemless way. Very few movies meet this feet. Other examples are The Terminator, The Matrix, Dragonheart. Attack of the Clones is number one in my book for just doing everything right.

He was suppose to be creepy. Thats what I like about his preformance and I thought he has talent. He better considering what he was able to do. His Anakin was one who acted childish and horny. While I can blame him for being horny many people have critized the childish behavior as bad acting. I disagree he purposefully acted childish to show how such behavior can lead to disaster. Attack of the Clones has such a deep story. It baros elements from shackspeare, the fall of Rome, and a bit of Tolkien to create a truely mastered work of story. That combined with extremely exciting action and state of the art effects equal a truely great cinematic experiance.

Al Bundy
Time
Twas the night before christmas, and all through the house,
no food was a stirring, not even a mouse.
Stockings were hung 'round dad's neck like a tie,
along with a note that said "presents or die".
Children were plotting all night in their beds,
while the wife's constant whining was splitting my head.
But daddy had money this year in the bank,
then they closed up early, now dad's in the tank.
...and all of a sudden Santa appeared,
a sneer on his face, booze in his beard.
Santa I said as he laughed merrily,
you do so much for others do something for me.
Bundy he said, you only sell shoes,
your son is a sneak-thief, your daughters' a flooze.
Ho Ho Santa said, should I mention your wife,
her hairs like an a-bomb, her nails like a knife.
As he climbs up the chimney, that fat piece of dung,
he mooned me two times, he stuck out his tongue.
And I heard him exclaim, as he broke wind with glee:
you're married with children, you'll never be free.

Watching The Empire Strikes Back and A New Hope I can see why someone would like them best but it honestly seems childish to prefer Return of the Jedi to Attack of the Clones. I am definutly a Star Wars fan. I have loved Star Wars since the momment I can remember. I wore out my VHS pan scan tapes of the originals. Natalie Portman can act as well as she looks in my opinion. Thats good considering she looks fucking gorgous. She has talent beyond her years. I would not want any other women to play the role. Natalie if your reading this look me up. I can dream can't I? The arguement that George uses it because of lazyness is stupid because it is more expensive and harder to do it digital. He does it digital because he believes it is more realistic, and in my opinion hes right.

I just purchased "Alien" on DVD; now it has both the directors cut and the original version on one single DVD. I presume it just plays the same versions, adding or subtracting certain scenes as required. Why can't Lucasfilm do this? Surely they have the knowhow? I also liked the introduction to the Directors cut, in which Ridley Scott very humbly said that he hoped we agreed with the changes he'd made in that version. Just imagine Lucas doing something like that...

As for me, I have decided just to stick with my VCR tapes for now. If the opportunity comes along, I will get a bootleg version, perhaps from someone who has posted in the forums here, but I'm not too fussed.

Adding and subtracting scenes in Alien was easy because there is only about 5 minutes difference. With Star Wars putting both versions on one disc would have a total of over 3 hours of movie. Thats just with the 1997 Special Edition since the DVDs will include addition changes it would be even longer. That would result at a slightly reduced bit rate.

No Attack of the Clones was the best Star Wars movie and The Phantom Menace is better then Return of the Jedi. The acting was good all of it. Every preformance works so well. Especially Natalie Portmans. In my opinion story, style, and acting of Attack of the Clones was all just as good as The Empire Strikes Back. But Attack of the Clones beets it with possibly the most exciting action sequence ever and far far better effects. Van Helsing is a dumb action movie. It is basically an effects show. Its dumb, its weird, but it is also very very fun. I enjoyed Van Helsing. The Hulks digital effects were excellent. Thats good since the rest of the movie absolutly sucked the great effects work is the only thing that makes The Hulk watchable. The Core is a good action movie. It has some cliches but has a good plot and I don't see how those effects could have been done without digital animation.

You argue that Computer Generated Imagery doesn't always look quite real. This is true but then again look at puppets and other filmmaking tricks. How often do they look fully believable. Almost never. Digital Animation is real far more often. Which is why filmmakers have pretty much abandoned hand drawn, stop motion, and wire animation. Digital technology made a live action Lord of the Rings movie possible. Why was it never made before no technology. Hand drawn animated movies of the past have always had the best imagery because there are no limits. Digital technology gives the same limitless feel but with photorealism. There is no such thing as to much CGI.

HD-DVD
Time
Technology always is progressing. HD-DVD won't be the last. Ultra Definition television is already being devoloped. A very early prototype was shown last year. Then again since we had HDTV demonstrations in 1981 but didn't get it till 1998 I suspect we won't get UDTV until around 2020. Todays DVD format has resolution of 720 x 480 quite a bit higher then laserdiscs 640 x 420 and vastly better then VHSs 320 x 240 but it doesn't compare to HDTV. HDTVs uses resolutions of 1080i and 720p. All HDTV broadcasts can look around twice as good as even a very good looking progressive anamorphic DVD. This presents a problem for the industry. As more and more people buy digital televisions they are going to notice that there television shows look better then there bought movies and are probably going to reduce buying movies. A High Definition video format already excists. D-VHS. D-VHS look on the outside the same as old VHS tapes but have resolution superior to HDTV broadcasts and about three times as good as DVD. D-VHS also have quite superior audio. Still D-VHS is a tape and has many tape disadvantages. Rewinding, big size, no extras, and degration over time because of this I have decided not to buy D-VHS. However I have seen D-VHS and let me tell you its not a bit better its way better then even the very best DVD on the very best television. It blows everything away. D-VHS are encoded in 1080i format. Resolution of 1920 x 540. HD-DVD uses resolution of 1920 x 1080. I can only imagine how good they will look. Only the most advanced and expensive televisions we look that good but even on a low end digital television the differences between it and SD-DVD will be ovious. Also HD-DVD is able to be made on traditional DVD assembly lines (its biggest advantage over its rival Blu-Ray) so they can be made and sold for a similar price as the SD-DVDs we buy.

HD-DVD
Time
For some reason the previous HD-DVD thread appears to have disappeared from this site. So I decided to start a new one. HD-DVD is something that needs to be talked about. In case you don't know HD-DVD is the next DVD format. It uses blue lasers and higher compression to hold movies at 1920 x 1080 resolution. Six times as good as the 720 x 480 resolution of current SD-DVD. The DVD forum has approved most HD-DVD specs and Toshiba says they can release HD-DVD in late 2005. It will also have superior sound. Current SD-DVDs use CD quality sound. Far better then VHS but we have heard better. DVD-A discs have sound quality 10x as high as CDs for music. HD-DVD is set to have the same high quaility 24/96 LPCM soundtracks that DVD-A discs use for movies. HD-DVDs hold 30 gigabits per disc compared to the 8.5 gigabit capacity of SD-DVD. HD-DVD also uses VC-9 video compression capable of holding 3x as much info in a bit as the MPEG-2 of SD-DVD.

Actually I don't know why the CGI Jabba looked poor. Draco from Dragonheart in 1996 looked a hell of alot better so they had better technology in 1997. They probably had time constraits or something. Still he wasn't that bad but could have been better. In my opinion after 1993s Jurassic Park digital animation has no limits. The dinosaurs walked around in the sun and looked real. Basically models on wires were fine during the 80s but the best model effects can't compare to good digital ships. George did not overuse computer generated imagery at all. Every digital shot looked great and made the whole Star Wars universe come alive. The digital Yoda made the puppet Yoda look sucky in comparison. I would love to see the puppet Yoda do those flips and kick all ass.

Ok, here we go, what was needed to change on TPM:

* No C3PO, no R2D2. Anakin built c3po?! I mean, small universe, isn't it?
* Anakin should be a lonely, sad, quiet kid. Not a freaking hyperactive kid filled with cheesy one-liners.
* Less gungans. Jar Jar proved to be necessary, but he could have about 5 minutes of screen time.
* It should blend with the 70s/80s look of the original trilogy. Clumsy robots with little people inside, wireframe CGI on screens...
* Darth Maul survives the battle and is killed by Palpatine.
* Clearly show Palpatine is Sidious, I mean, who is the antagonist on that film? Who's the "bad" guy?

Oh, and for AOTC:

* Anakin a little bit more serious, quiet, and challenging Obi-Wan a little bit more.
* More Qui-Gon references.
* No "Yoda teaching kids" scene. Obi-Wan figures it out by himself.
* Better paced action sequences, a better space fight between Obi-Wan and Jango.
* Again, NO C3PO. It would be ok to have R2D2, but with no flying around.

On both:

* Acting, for God's sake! Oh, and only featuring GOOD unknown actors.
* Less CGI, more real stuff.

First of all C3P0 and R2D2 belong in the Star Wars universe from the beginning. The droids in the original trilogy were junk because they were not designed for physical activity. R2D2 for example is a space droid designed to aid a one man fighter no need for him to have great monuverability on the ground. C3PO is a protical droid designed for communication no need for a good physical body. Surely in a universe with space travel that great they oviously could invent such advanced droids. It was excellent to not show clearly that Palpatine was Sideous. These are meant to be watched sequencally and its cool to keep the villian hidden until the right moment. Hence the title The Phantom Menace. The arguement about Darth Maul getting killed by Palpatine had to be a joke. Thats just stupid. Like I said before Anakin being the way that he was a way to start him off completly innocent and slowly mold him to evil. In The Phantom Menace George wanted to have no clue whatsoever if you haven't seen the originals that Anakin would be evil. In Attack of the Clones Anakin is just well horny. Who can blame him? While five minutes is a bit low I agree Jar Jar should have had less screen time in The Phantom Menace. Still The Phantom Menace is a happy time in Star Wars. Before the Clone Wars before the Empire. Jar Jar in some ways aided that happy go lucky feel George was shooting for. I think all the actors have talent and did a good job in there roles. Except Natalie Portman who did an excellent job other then being gorgous. Also the shiny look of the prequals is symbolic to the happy before Empire time of Star Wars. The grimmy 1970s look of the originals symbolizes the dark times of the Empire. Also there is no such thing as to much CGI. CGI is the ultimate filmmaking tool. It allows a filmmaker to visuallize anything in his head and bring it to life in photorealism. CGI has freed filmmaking from multiple constrants.

I personally disagree. I think making him so young put him at a tender age. It allowed for his character to start as inocent as possible. That was his intension to make him as friendly and inocent as possible. This would make it better to slowly mold him into the evil warlord Darth Vader. I personally thought that Jake Loyd did a good job as a young Anakin.

I like this to go against bitchy fan boys and some of the stupidest prequal complaints from stupid fanboys.

"Its more advanced in the prequals then the originals"

Where the hell does this come from. The death star and most star destroyers all appear more advanced and powerful then anything in the prequals.

"Too much CGI"

No such thing. Digital technology is an amazing tool for telling a movies story. It allows anything a filmmaker visualizes to come to screen in photorealism.
