Calling out to the true Original Trilogy fanatics for help...
Time
On some bootlegs I just got, when Han, Obi-Wan and Luke are being sucked into the Death Star by the tractor beam, the sound goes all quiet and you can hardly hear them talking. Was this in the original movies?... like the tractor beam was sucking some sound waves out of the air or something? or is this just something that got screwed up on my DVD?

I am boycotting EpIII.
Time
All of you who are boycotting Episode 3... stay strong, and don't believe the hype.

This is BY FAR the worst Star Wars movie ever made, and is much better at completly ruining all the classic characters than the first two movies were. To rank this movie higher than the original movies is so ridiculous I can't even understand it. The only way I can still even be a Star Wars fan is by pretending that these new movies simply did not happen, because it has all been ruined. Even Yoda, even the Emperor, and even Darth Vader. Absolutely awful, the least enjoyable movie I have seen in my life... There are a lot of really bad movies like this one out there, but none have ever tried to suck so much good out of this world. DON'T WATCH IT!!! YOU ARE NOT MISSING A DAMN THING!!!

New to the board... thoughts on Episodes 1 & 2

I happen to like Phantom Menace. There are some definite problems, but it has some great moments and one of the best swordfights in movie history.

The fighting is great, especially the final duel which is greatly enhanced by John Williams, again pulling through 100% for SW. He has not let us down yet. However, the way in which Darth Maul is killed is quite questionable, if not upsetting...

Hayden is a good actor from what I saw of him in Life as a House and Shattered Glass. The problem is that he played Anakin the same way he played his character in Life As a House. Jake Lloyd is an annoying, but so are all child actors.

I agree that Hayden does play the same character he did in Life As A House, and it doesn't work. I find it hard to believe that Darth Vader was ever such a wimp, but then again maybe that's why he was so easy to turn.

I think everything is bigger because it is a Republic rather than a Dictatorship.

The thing that made the OT so great was that it was this great outer space adventure, but it was happening in a world that is somehow familiar to us. George Lucas has many times mentioned his idea of a "used universe". With the new movies, I never find myself watching something which I think is actually happening, like you do with the OT. That is also a problem with the DVDs. You are buying into the story, and then a big terrible looking CG monster walks by for no reason! (see the Mos Eisley scene in ANH) Good examples of unbelievable scenes are the Gungans vs. The Battle Droids and Anakin and Padme in the droid factory. You feel as though you are watching a computer game and not a movie, and that just isn't how SW should feel.

I’m a huge fan who is brand new to the board, and I was just wondering how all you SW junkies feel about Episode 1 & 2. Does anyone actually think they are well made movies?!?

My thoughts:

  1. The acting is awful, especially in Ep.2 (but god bless Hayden… see Life As A House)
  2. The story is too political and scattered
  3. The scale of the movies are not believable (EVERYTHING is too big)
  4. The mood swings are RIDICULOUS, especially in Ep.1
  5. These movies concentrate more on flattering the Original Trilogy (RIP) than actually entertaining the general public!

R2 doesn't taste very good
Time
No one has mentioned that in the DVD release, Luke no longer says "Good thing you don't taste very good" when R2 is spit out of the swamp in Degobah. He now says "You were lucky to get out of there" or something TOTALLY PATHETIC like that. I noticed this because I was watching the DVD with my Dad, and this was one of his favorite lines. Nice work Lucas...

My 2 cents releasing the OT on DVD

I don't know if anyone's discussed this before, but if the original theatrical versions are put on DVD it's gonna look really crappy.

Well you know what else looks really crappy... movies that are made with computers... and you know what else... movies that are intimate and honest, that have crappy computer animated monsters put in. Does anyone agree with me? Most CG still looks like crap, and I'd take an elephant in a costume over CG anyday of the week! Please put out these DVDs so I can quit watching the tape of the 3 movies my dad made for me when they were on TV in 1987!!! WHEN I WAS TWO YEARS OLD!!! I'm getting sick of the FORD TEMPO car adds. And yes, I do own the new DVD's, they just don't feel half as real anymore!!! Maybe Lucas will keep altering them until they are as cheesy as Ep1 and Ep2! That would be great! But hey, without Lucas, I wouldn't even have anything to hope for, so God bless him.
