Also, and this might be an odd thing to be excited about, but I love the old crackling radio sound from the x-Wing pilot from the first few seconds of the trailer. New SW has had a hard time emulating the sound effects of the OT and it seems they finally figured out how to do it. If I remember it correctly then Ben Burt recorded all the stormtrooper dialogue and radio transmission via old walkie-talkies. The recent movies seems to have tried to emulate this digitally and its not quite the same. Ditto on the holograms which until The Mandalorian looked to crisp and detailed (though it’s still not quite OT).

I loved that too. The show does such a great job of capturing the old-school Star Wars vibe. This also confirms that the x-wings are indeed intercepting the Razorcrest, instead of fighting alongside it, which I like: the New Republic aren’t the default ‘good guys’, they’re now just another authority getting in The Mandalorian’s way.

There were no big reveals, and from a quick scroll on Twitter that’s disappointed a lot of people, but that was a very well put-together trailer. Music is awesome. And that line, “If I can locate other Mandalorians, they can guide me,” has me even more excited.

Also, forget about Ahsoka… Star-Trek-alien-looking blue fish man returns!

The Phantom Menace - anyone want to chat about TPM?
Time

I approach Star Wars movies in two ways: critically, in terms of narrative and characters etc, and aesthetically. I generally dislike how futuristic, shiny and CGI the settings look in episodes II and III, particularly Coruscant, but with The Phantom Menace it’s totally different. I love the depiction of Coruscant, and I feel overall the film’s aesthetic fits in more with that of the original trilogy.

I’ve never really been able to put my finger on it. Maybe the colours are duller, sometimes more naturalistic, the sets and buildings seem/are practical, something like that. It’s just something I love about TPM and I wondered if any others have the same feeling. Aesthetically, with everything up to the costumes, it genuinely FEELS like a prequel to the original films more than AOTC and ROTS.

This shot in particular from the theatrical cut is a great example of advanced technology combined with ornate and old-fashioned architecture, much like Ralph McQuarrie’s original concept art for Had Abbadon in the early 80s.

Really interested in what this graffitied, urban setting from the trailer is like. I’ve seen some people complain that because of the streetlights, it looks too much like an actual modern city on earth, so I’m looking forward to seeing it in the show so I can figure out what I think of it.

The New Republic EP1: A Vergence in the Force 4K (The Mandalorian Season 1 Edit) [V4 RELEASED]

Often you can isolate the audio channel with the dialogue.

Thanks Hal. I thought as much, especially after going back to watch some of the rescored scenes. Another element of the edit that’s pulled off really well.

Hope I haven’t missed this somewhere - what editing software did you use for this smudger9, other than Photoshop for some shots?

The New Republic EP1: A Vergence in the Force 4K (The Mandalorian Season 1 Edit) [V4 RELEASED]

Just finished watching, and I think the cuts you made were very successful. It worked well to have Werner Herzog’s character talk about the Mandalorians and how “it is a shame your people suffered,” then in the next scene we see the Mandalorians living underground for the first time. It also worked very well to have the space dogfight as an immediate reason for Mando returning to Nevarro.

I thought it was a shame how offhand Kuill’s death ended up in the context of one whole film, a lot of the tension building up to it being cut as well, but whenever shots or dialogue were edited out they were edited out very smoothly, so well done.

It was really nice to revisit the show with season 2 just around the corner.

Ranking the Star Wars films
Time
 1. Star Wars
 2. The Empire Strikes Back
 3. Rogue One
 4. Return of the Jedi
 5. The Force Awakens
 6. The Last Jedi
 7. Revenge of the Sith
 8. Solo
 9. The Phantom Menace
 10. Attack of the Clones
 11. The Rise of Skywalker

Very conflicted about where to put Revenge of the Sith. Occasionally rate it higher.
As for TV shows…

 1. The Mandalorian
 2. Star Wars: The Clone Wars
 3. Star Wars Rebels
 4. Star Wars Clone Wars (Genndy Tartakovsky)
 5. Resistance

I love the first 4 series, and Resistance I thought was great kids’ content, just not good enough for me to stick past the first 2 episodes. I’m not really qualified to rank it.

Would it not be amazing if we got a Darth Vader movie directed by Christopher Nolan?

Certainly a valid concern.

It’s a lame concern. This is the biggest franchise on planet Earth. There’s no way to make a new StarWars anything without a potion of the fanbase hating it. Just make the movie you wanna make.

I only said that because of The Last Jedi. I like TLJ, and I’m glad Rian Johnson got creative control to make the movie he wanted to make, but it’s true… that didn’t go well for him. So I understand why any director would treat appeasing such a vitriolic fanbase as a daunting task.

Rosario Dawson (along with Timothy Olyphant) are now CONFIRMED to be in The Mandalorian season 2: https://thedirect.com/article/the-mandalorian-season-2-disney-rosario-dawson-timothy-olyphant-cast

This ad could also suggest there will be a second trailer to confirm the casting, presumably as appearances on screen. I’m very excited

Denmark Disney+ ad has (accidentally?) confirmed the casting of Rosario Dawson and Timothy Olyphant in season 2: https://thedirect.com/article/the-mandalorian-season-2-disney-rosario-dawson-timothy-olyphant-cast
The ad has now been taken down.

Almost certain that Ahsoka Tano will be in the show now. As for Timothy Olyphant, of course a lot of people say Cobb Vanth from the Aftermath trilogy; I haven’t read those books in ages though so I’ve forgotten who he is.

The Essential Star Wars Animated Series Episodes for Movie Marathon Inclusion
Time

Here’s an edited list I made for a friend a while ago, of the essential Clone Wars episodes - but this is for someone who’s never seen the show. (Friend in question still hasn’t got past the Umbara arc)

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1EWF6Om1ZPZBE0g-g_8fHnU25PqPecIUB/view?usp=sharing
I hope this Google Drive link works. I would have just typed out the episodes to contribute to the thread, but when I was making it, I enjoyed collecting all the images so much that I spent ages doing it, so now I figure I should just send the original document.

Ahsoka (live action series) - general discussion thread

I think Ahsoka showing up in a cameo or as a supporting character in The Mandalorian and elsewhere is a great way to add a lot depth to whatever story they’re telling. We still follow the main character and their story, but whenever they connect with something larger, even if brief, I think it’s great.

Absolutely agreed. I think she should function more as a guide for the characters than a major player herself. She’s the best (living) person to inform Din Djarin about the Jedi Order, its history, and failings, and demise etc, and she can offer advice on what to do with the child, but I reckon she should maybe only be in one episode. After all, we’re likely to get a separate show about the search for Ezra at some point, and she’ll have to part ways with Mando to continue that quest.

Another prediction I have is that future seasons of The Mandalorian will get more involved with Mandalore itself. If Ahsoka directs Din towards her old part-time friend Bo Katan - who as you probably know is also rumoured to appear, reprised by Katee Sackhoff herself - I think it would be a really nice touch, having got to see their relationship in the Clone Wars finale earlier this year.

I don’t want to see Ahsoka in Mando season 2 (I also still believe that it’s just a rumor), because her character needs to be used sparingly. If we see her in this show I feel like we’re shrinking Star Wars down again. That’s the last thing we pretty much all want.

True, and I do hate Star Wars’ constant universe-shrinking. But if Din Djarin is searching for Jedi (or, at least, force wielders) isn’t eventually meeting Ahsoka the logical way to go?
