hey folks,

still working on things, heres an update:

still dropping about a dozen frames per 40minutes of capture, ive tried virtualdub and virtualvcr, both about the same, i tried capturing a dvd with virtualdub and only lost 7 frames in the same time span, premiere for some reason wont recognize my capture card yet.

im not sure im concerned about audio yet, seems like i can worry about that after im done with the video?

that being said, looks like i may have a lot of splicing to do, i captured about the first five minutes of faces side a and tried manually ivtc-ing it using offset 0-5. the screenshots all look very similar except for offsets 3 and 4 which had obvious scan lines and seemed to be introducing parts of the surrounding frames, im not sure if im imagining differences or if they are really there. not sure how this will play out with a longer sample, maybe 5 minutes and one frame worth isnt enough of a sample?

nother thing i was wondering, virtualdub has a "next drop frame" command, which appears to locate the position where the dropped frame is, but when i use it i would expect the spot to be blank or black or something, instead theres a normal frame there. not sure what this means but it does seem to help me in knowing when my ivtc will lose cadence

hey folks,

no intention to hijack the thread, just trying to group subjects

i did another capture, this time on to a second added hard drive, and got 14 dropped frames off of side a of faces, last time i had 12 so i dunno

im wondering if it could be my laser disc player?

ive noticed that when i set the fps at 29.97, the file has come out at 29.97 twice, and once at both 29.9703 and 29.9736, thought this might have something to do with the dropped frames?

is there a tool for locating dropped frames and replacing them?

hey folks,

so at the moment how is the best way to plug in to the xo project?

i had an idea and dont know if this is similar or not to the xo project, but from what i understand, programmers often use a tool known as CVS.

it works like theres a big repository of code for a project, often open source. people can check in and out of the repository, either anonymously or with a login. they can check out code and work on it, and then they check it back in, when its checked back in, there is some sort of democratic procees to decide what to do with the newly checked in code, it might replace the old, it might get dumped, it might evolve into something new. and then the process continues.

in our case, it would be an original trilogy repository, we could check in and out any of the building blocks of the project: frames, segments, scripts, whatever. the goal would be to make it as easy as possible for people to collaborate, a sort of distributed restoration project, where we are can all work on something however we do, and then when we can combine our work we do.

im not sure how this would be set up, but hey, neat

hey folks,

what do you know, im in the same spot. ive been playing with faces captures for the last week, been a long time coming. right now i am trying to determine why i am dropping frames and what steps i need to take to create a 24fps master. i have an osprey 230 capture card, a p4 3.0 with 512 ram, and an ata 80 gig 7200rpm hard drive. my capture card seems to allow me a lot of control over my capture. i have captured side a of the faces star wars several times at different resolutions (720X480 and 720x366, both of them cropped) i am wondering if what im guessing is pretty much the maximum resolution for a capture is yielding dropped frames, am i short memory or is my hard drive to slow? what is the proper resolution to capture at?

if my vertical capture resolution is stretched to 480 cropped, will i have problems deinterlacing?

i just saw garden state and was really impressed with the movie and natalie portman, i dont think you can compare it to harold and maude but it stirred similar feelings in me

alec guiness in lawrence of arabia and the ealing comedies, particularly the ladykillers, but the man in the white suit is also really good

james earl jones is a great actor and i really enjoy the hunt for red october

cant wait to see the rumored added christopher lee parts in the return of the king extended edition (i hope this is true), they added 50 minutes of footage

i have 3 memories that qualify as the oldest things i can distinctly remember. i got some clock toy for my 4th or 5th birthday that i remember playing with in my living room in my pjs on a sunny morning

my other two are star wars memories. i must have been 3 1/2 when i saw star wars at the geneva drive in daly city (just south of san francisco). i remember generally being at the drive in and scenes inside the millennium falcon up on that big screen out in the dark. i remember those speaker boxes on the poles next to our car

i also remember endor scenes from jedi and leaving the coronet theatre in san francisco. i remember the ending credits and filing out of the theatre with the crowds . sadly the coronet is the last big single screen theatre in san francisco and it is scheduled to be torn down soon to make room for a nursing home. the geneva drive in was closed years ago

ive noticed the darkness too, in some scenes the detail disapears into the darkness, ive especially noticed it in empire but thats thd only one ive really compared yet (to my tr47 discs thanks tr47 i never thanked you) ive also noticed things seem kind of blue, im planning on calibrating my tv when i get the chance, i have the avia disc but ive never used it before

wow nice labels and inserts for the holiday special would be nice too...

i got the zahn/thrawn series audio book cassettes, im working on transfering them to disc now and im working on cover backs too. the audio books are 9 hours long total so theyre a lot to absorb but i like them. lucas may discredit them but since hes doing that with the OT already i dont feel phased.

The first two films of the original Star Wars trilogy make it onto the list probably for reasons of nostalgia rather than science. Essentially westerns set in space, they both cover the universal themes of good versus evil while making lead actors Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher spit out mind-boggling technospeak on a regular basis. There is also an element of mysticism (which some say sets them apart from the rest of science fiction), with the idea of an all-pervading "force" that can be harnessed by certain people for good or evil. The epic saga revolves around the battle between the all-enslaving Empire (led by the Emperor, a force-wielding maniac and his part-human part-machine henchman Darth Vader) and a small band of rebels. Its use of science is sketchy at best - light-speed travel is dealt with by the use of a "hyperspace" where the normal laws of physics don't seem to apply and force-wielding Jedi fight with theoretically impossible lightsabers - but the emphasis here is certainly not on answering the problems of the human condition. Two of the first blockbusters, they also started the franchises for toys, games and replicas that no science fiction film can do without nowadays.

hey folks,

im working on covers. im mostly reworking what people here have done but heres my twist, im modeling the covers somewhat after my lawrence of arabia one which is cloth with glossy plates glued to the front and back, with gold filigre on the spine.

the black border here is the black paper looking stuff from one of the sets here, i believe it is supposed to match the paper texture in the defintive collection packaging, the black border and the spine are to be printed on normal or at least non glossy paper. the front and back plates are to be printed on glossy photo paper and held in place with a spot of glue, the whole compilation finally being slipped into a normal case. i think the contrast coud be very nice but i havent printed any out yet .

i have always desired to be able to one day line up all 9 episodes of star wars together in a nice neat row, i dont know how people feel about the zahn books but they were supposedly 7,8 and 9 so im designing dvd size case covers for the audio books (which i havent heard yet but the books were pretty good, as soon as i can get a copy of the tapes im gonna either cd them or maybe sacd them). that being said, here are my spines.

im planning on doing this with the magnoliafan edits which i hope to get a copy of, they seem appropriate to me, this is the peoples star wars here.

the spines are from a photo of my pride and joy star wars wall paper. i have one sheet, it repeats up and down and diagonally side to side, but as it is behind glass i couldnt do a lot with that aspect of it, the edges are slightly cut off by the frame and the glare from the glass doesnt help either, dont know if a photoshop wiz around here would be interested in tweaking it. so the spines for the episodes are from a section of the wallpaper. for the supplemental spine im trying to do something with the image repeating up and down but its hard, the supplemental cover is being designed for a 5 or 6 disc case, to separate the spine from the rest of the set since it breaks the pattern and so i can cram a lot of supplemental material in one case

hey folks,

i dont know if i fully understand the anamorphic dvd player issue but heres my shot:

when you play an amorphic dvd on a normal tv set, the picture you see is actually "compressed" to fit the screen, so some of the resolution of the dvd is lost by the black lines showing at the top and bottom the screen, the black lines take up available lines of resolution. when you watch an anamorphic dvd an a widescreen set, the picture isnt compressed or tweaked in any way, it fits the screen using all the resolution that is encoded on the dvd, the picture is being displayed in its native format.

a dvd player playing a non anamorphic dvd without the black bars is actually scaling the image to fit right. this is the equivalent of say taking a 200 dpi image in photoshop and increasing the image to 300 dpi, the resolution "is" technically increased and may or may not look better depending on the situation, but this increase in resolution is artificial...

hows that, am i going in the right direction?
