some sports-loving people

:)

I enjoy sports, too. I watch college basketball once or twice a week to follow my alma mater. I casually follow college football. But after college I lost interest in pro sports, since I was no longer exposed to 24/7 ESPN coverage in the dorms or apartments.

I play basketball and tennis, among other things. Though I'm a bit lazy these days, I typically run 20-30 miles per week (some say running isn't a sport, let's call it an athletic activity). I've run marathons. I appreciate athletic activity and exercise, and I also appreciate watching people who are extremely talented at different sports.

So, I will say it's also possible to casually enjoy sports, as a participant and a spectator, without being too extreme or hard core about it. But I find the ESPN culture, for lack of better description, to be excessive and a bit silly. And others would say the same about someone who plays Warcraft 10 hours per day. And I would agree.

Point is, when it comes down, extremism for anything can be annoying. But in our culture it's more acceptable to be extremely into sports than it is to be extremely into SW, gaming, science, etc. In school yards it's the alpha jock-types who tend to bully others. There's a huge stigma people are taught to associate with "geeky" things at a young age, and that permeates into other aspects of life as people age.

When I think about it, Coruscant is really the only PT planet that would be worth going back to. Actually, Naboo might be an interesting place to revisit. And Kamino, if they ever wanted to explain that mess properly (which I don't think they should bother with).

I'd be okay with Naboo as long as the Gungans were extinct. ;)

How about a time warp that transplants our SW heroes to our planet? Oh yea.

I just get confused by the inordinate passion that sports fans have, and I hate that as stupid as it is, it's totally acceptable.

25 guys spending their weekend on the fantasy football "draft" or putting on their little sports costumes to go to the bar (and yes, I call sports jerseys 'costumes') just seems like a waste of time, and it's up to anyone how to waste their time, but I get weird looks for holding my annual "6 Star Wars Movies In A Day" marathon.

In my uninformed, unfounded, inaccurate opinion, the sports vs. geeks thing is one of the fundamental issues in our popular culture. I might even venture far enough to say that the disdain some sports-loving people have for "geek" things is an extension of anti-intellectualism.

NFL to eliminate kickoffs?

Warb, you're right. Didn't mean to crap on your thread.

On topic, like I said before, I think this approach to kickoffs is misguided. I think it's the increased factor of padding/protection that causes NFL players to be more reckless with their hits.

Changing kickoffs will provide a false sense of safety and prevent NFL executives from making real decisions.

What? That sounds like a parody of every sappy movie ever made.

It could have played out that way, but the performances keep it from the sap.

Instead of a coin toss and kickoff, the ball should be placed at the 50 yard line at the beginning of the game. Each team will be in their own endzone. Then, when the whistle blows, everyone runs at the ball to see who gets it first.

A league used to (sort of) do that!

Yea, that's why I mentioned it. But instead of single players, have both teams running at each other from opposite sides. It'd be like a huge battle from Braveheart at the beginning of every game!

Rust and Bone

Pretty good, but just shy of great, film about a whale trainer who loses her lower legs in a tragic accident. She forms a bond with a single father struggling to raise his son who turns to kickboxing to make money.

Really great performances, nice cinematography, etc. The story wasn't anything special, but a film like this focuses on the nuances of the characters' performances and emotional journeys. So, overall a good watch.
