35 or 16mm trailers of EMP or ROJ
Time

I was watching a 35mm trailer of star wars and realized they were showing off clips that had not been released in the final cut. So I want to try and restore/enhance some of these shots but Was wondering if there were any 4k versions out there?
Heres one that I found: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=22Nv2v5eHOs&list=PLF3yi1mU9hNgXFxYFVTr6KAOD6piLtrfC&index=51&ab_channel=StymyParsley

I want to try and find all trailers from ROJ/EMP so I don’t miss anything

Guys, how do you go about downloading youtube videos? screen capture or just a converter somewhere? my laptop’s screen recorder is terrible and the website I usually go to for conversions got rid of its URL uploader.

Y2mate.com Is where I normally go to for general URL downloads. It is still active.

There is a Vimeo URL downloader too but I can not remember the name of the site. Just google vimeo downloader.

You can use OBS studio for decent screencapture it’s free app it will only handle up to 2 video sources.

When I go on Y2mate it says it’s been discontinued or is no longer working. I also got 2 security warnings before getting on there 😕
I might try OBS but I also remembered another software called handbrake which I used for conversions along time ago, although can’t recall if it did url’s

You may want to start from scratch but here’s a video where I’ve already improved the quality and made it 60 fps, no scratch removal done. This may or may not be the highest-quality version out there you just may need to compare since it was a while ago that I posted this video.

I looked at the other hi-quality and it’s a toss up, but I like yours using the AI scratch removal…I would prob drop the frame rate to do the scratches, the color I can tweak…did you do all the clips for Jedi like this or only have the sandstorm?

I think that’s my only ROJ one, besides one with the deleted rancor scene but I could improve on that one. I’ve got a little bit more EMP shots

That’s incredible! When I saw the source I wouldn’t imagine that was possible on non-pro/non-studio set-up.

For the color (ala your cheap laptop) I went and did a quick tweak that I think takes it closer to realism, but maybe not? I just reduced saturation a decent amount and also shifted the color a tiny bit from the red/magenta toward the green/yellow. This isn’t remotely belittling your efforts. Just seeing if you agree and if it’s perhaps a smidge of help (or maybe it’s just not)

Very nice! looks a bit too unsaturated to me though, somewhere in between
I’ll mix it with the higher-quality video later today/tomorrow

So here’s the second color test. I didn’t try using the 35mm colored photo but instead a photo from the movie as a reference for the ai colorization to see how accurately it could get the colors.
Some things that would need to be either edited with ai or hand fixed would be leias hair color, their lips, and c3pos hand. Maybe I could put it into several different ai colonizers that don’t require a reference image, take that, mask out everything else and stack it onto the original.

Also, the video I sampled was the 60 fps version in lower quality so it’s quite messy in quality. And for the color grading Im currently using a cheap laptop with a screen that changes color/brightness on its level of tilt so my colors probably look more off than what you see.

Thanks I’ll take a look at version I have and compare. Just curious, what does converting a 23.97 frame video to 60fps do to help? I mean it’s more frame to edit if you have to go frame by frame for dust etc…just curious I see others have mentioned… I will also try a shot at isolation and see what I can come up with, have not tried it yet.

this one seems to be a bit better in quality, maybe in color too.

Update:
I got a response from the company and basically what they said to me was their copy came from a transfer of a 16mm film. And It’s in the public domain. Their restorer Robert Kauspedas passed away and they own the master copy of the restored version that he produced, which he said was “still not that great quality” and that their version is available to license if I want to.
Im just going to ask if I can see the video because I’m not too familiar with the business of licensing something and whether it’s free to do so.
Update #2
He replied by saying he’s going to ask for approval from a producer and that will be in touch.

Out of curiosity reference the cantina…

How well would the drunk driving PSA advert upscale for the cantina band shots?

The reason I ask is those shots are passable as being accurate where as the holiday Special shots are not location acurate such as the lack of window behind them and positioning of the band members.

The footage is not the best from that advert.

Alright so I’ve spent some time looking through websites and youtube videos of the PSA videos and I think I have found the 3 best-quality videos for an upscale attempt.
The first one is the 16mm blue-tinted video where it doesn’t have the right color but has most of the right exposure to see everything there is to see in the frame, but it does have scratches.

The second video is a better quality version than the “remaster” version up on youtube which was posted a longer time ago with a lower maximum quality set at 360p but when compared to the “remaster” it has less compression and blockiness to the video. This one has color but needs to be color graded as it has a grey/green tint and has no scratches.

The third and uncertain one is a version that was posted by the company Motion Picture Video from 2 years ago as a youtube short. In its description, they say “The p.s.a. has been restored from a 16mm film print that was in pretty bad shape. Enjoy some rarely-seen Star Wars from MPV! Restored by our expert Robert Kauspedas”
Now the video has been posted as with an aspect ratio of a phone so we’re missing the sides of the video but the exposure and detail are almost as close as the blue 16mm version. It does have scratches but that’s an easy fix. I have emailed the company asking if they still have the video In its original quality and aspect ratio, and if not, if they can give me the email of the person who restored the 16mm film (Robert Kauspedas). Now their company is in America and I’ve just sent them the email so It may take a day for a response. I’ve tried googling Robert but have had no luck so far.

What I plan on testing is seeing whether I can blend each video source on top of one another like a fusion. So I have the #1 (blue tint) as the base layer (all the correct exposure and detail), I set the blue tint to black and white for easier color adding, and then either #2 or #3 on top of #1 and set it to (color blend) so its now in color. It sounds kind of confusing probably but I’ll start testing it out soon once I fix up my PC and have access to the software again, and once I can confirm whether or not it’s possible to obtain the restored version from Robert.

Videos: let me know if you find a better version (compare them)
Video #1 (Blue tint) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0_VW9O9Y5ZU&ab_channel=TheRetronaut
Video #2 (better than the remaster) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a0JQid50UNE&ab_channel=ScratchedMedia
Video #3 (“Restored” footage) https://tinyurl.com/bdfh9axv by Robert Kauspedas

Well before I was cleaning up scratches for videos I was just upscaling and color grading. So I wasn’t doing any real frame-by-frame clean up and I just made it 60fps because it looked smoother and when compared to the original, (in my opinion) better. But now since I also remove scratches and dirt, the 60 fps is usually done at the end of everything if I think it’s necessary. And if you want you could just set it back to 24 fps.

I might send you a few clips if you don’t mind later on that you might not have…

I appreciate any clips you may have that I do not, especially if they build on the story as well. I was not going to do B/W but software is good now and there are many still color reference shots to give it a try. below is my deleted scenes I plan to add in:

  • Luke talks more about all the aliens he is seeing when they first walk in.
  • Deleted scene of ben from behind the group to the bar to sit down before Luke and 3PO enter (deleted scene POV from behind luke as he enters
  • extra shot of the two Duros arguing etc
  • Deleted from special eddition shot of Defal (aka the Wolfman)
  • Deleted shot of hooded fox character and robed balding snaggletooth character
  • Deleted shot of Smoker (Dannik Jerriko) Pan shot over to others
  • Shot of bald girl talking to the lutrillian (fat rodent guy)
  • Twins talking to Mosep Binned character (stringy bearded guy who in the early comics they thought was Jabba)
  • Extra cantina shots Model nodes
  • Deleted hand sock alien talking to wolfman #2 (less face hair )
  • Fly guy and Lutriallian again
  • The Twins around another snaggletooth
  • Praying manntis guy
  • Jenny and Han kiss
  • Jenny gets up as the gang sits down with solo (solo compliments ben’s handy work)

I think the extra scenes also are not as important…but more fan service…but worth preserving for some. I was shocked was was all there when I started looking. I looked and looked and do not see the informant guy and Obiwan coming near - walks away to the left behind chewbacca.? This must be the normal looking “Garouf Lafoe” who tells the stormtroopers outside they are inside rt? I am interested in this one and any others you may have

Here’s the most recent test I’ve done on fixing old footage. This one was enhancing, removing scratches. and testing out a ghit hub ai colorized.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x1h4lllRabU&ab_channel=InfectiousSneeze
My PC recently broke so I don’t have access to all the softwares but I have been testing out a software for fixing old audio with mixed results.
Im also really surprised at how accurately you got the colors to match from the Hoth hallway scene. Was that just adobe?

Do you intend to colour it to match the ESB:R colours of this scene, when it’s finished?

I don’t think it’s possible to match the exact colors as in the film. The low quality and the many blacks made it lose 90% of the detail, and the contrast between the whites and darks makes it much more difficult to color accurately. I’ll probably see how much more I can accurately color in the scene.
