I'm of the mind that A New Hope badly needed a tweak post Special Edition, and got it thanks to Anywan. Jedi almost as much. Empire is a trickier animal.

Thank you, I take that as quite the compliment.
I'm trying to talk one of the better graphics editors on the forums to help me really fix the bumblebee pissing scene, by covering up the fact that the agents are wet. Again, at this point I chalk it to them sweating.
Sometimes all the fast cutting helped, sometimes it was a motherf*#ker to get around. I'm most proud of my tiny cuts, that no one will notice, like tightening up the shot where the red haired soldier (scut farkus from A Christmas Story, btw) gets spiked by Scorponok, and when Scorponoks tail pops up on the table. It was weird having to make Michael Bay cuts shorter, to make the action a little faster (confused smiley face). If you go through the cuts list with the movie, you'll see a ton of little things that you probably wouldn't notice otherwise. I would almost recommend watching the theatrical version right before watching my edit.
I understand your thoughts on the "perfect day speech, it just seemed a little too cheesy, IMO. It's not a horrible scene, just not my favorite. To be honest, it was the first cut on my first fanedit, so maybe I was just excited to be cutting anything!
"Bring the rain". I don't know. I'm sure that there is some chatter, but it is discouraged in general according to my younger military sources. It just seemed a little overacted. Not an unusual thing in a Bay movie, but I didn't feel it was needed either way. I fought with that decision for a long time, cutting and reinstating it several times. Maybe in the end I just felt I had to cut it, since I had so much time into getting it right! ;)
"Left cheek, left check, left cheek!" With this one, it seemed that it was a bit unrealistic (yeah, even in a movie with giant alien robots) for him to repeat it three times. I mean, he's fighting an enemy like he's never seen before, and he has time to say that three times, rather than just unloading his gun on a giant killing machine? Nah. So I tried to cut it down to 1 "left cheek", but it just wasn't smooth. That would have gone against my main point of the first cut, which was keep all the cuts as seamless as possible. I've seen too many edits where people get cut-happy, and it ruins an otherwise decent fanedit.
When I start the second cut, I'll make a quick focuspuller edit, but I can't put it out, because I'm really against the "left cheek" scene. When my wife found out I was editing Transformers, it was the first thing she asked about!
Again, thank you for the honest review, I'm floored that people seem to be liking my edit.

Ok so I've watched your complete edit of the film. My opinion: almost perfect. Your cutting was good. There's a lot of fast cutting in the film of course (official release), some of it not great, so to edit around some of those scenes is a bit tricky. I think you pulled it off very well. The bumblebee "pissing scene" was a tricky scene to edit but it still worked, you did the best you could with it.
The only thing for me that makes this a one or two percent less then a perfect edit are a very few teeny tiny cuts that I don't think you needed to make. The "perfect day" scene for example, only lasts a few seconds but shows characters actually being characters. I don't think the "bring the rain" line needed to be cut. In discussing the film with my uncle (a former Marine who served in Lebanon) he claims that it's not uncommon for "hyped up phrases" to be included in comm traffic in the heat of combat. In any case, I think we can all agree that Bay films in general are very firm in the realm of disbelief, this film very much included. Having said that, It's a hero saying his hero line having his hero moment, and this is of course a hero film. I also don't mind the "back cheek" moment, I think the humor works.
These are all of course personal preferences. And other then these small things I think the cutting was perfect. I always thought the end battle scene was a bit of a mess in the editing and you improved it A LOT. So bottom line, much rather watch this over the other.
So if you're serious about that focuspuller edition you let me know. ;)

Thanks for not taking my review personally, I meant it constructively obviously, and as I said I like the edit and basically the end result. I can't tell you how much pleasure it gave me when I saw that a lot of the programmer dialog was gone ("there's only one man that can crack this code" I believe is the line ARGH!). I was literally in the theatre watching this film thinking about what could be taken out. You've done that in spades.
I would be extremely grateful for a 'focuspuller edit' if you actually wanted to go out of your way to do it. If I was forced to compromise I could live without the "left cheek" scene. In any case, if you were to undertake such an edit your payment, among other things would be huge bags of glory. ;)

Sorry for not answering sooner. No I was not aware. I think it's very safe to assume that what you heard was not from Vangelis, probably a cover from someone. In anycase interesting exerience. :)

Nope, I didn't know enough about the A-10 to know the difference. If you can supply me with a good clean ac3 (preferably 5.1 mix) of it, I'll try to get it into the next cut. I did consult with some military friends about the "bring the rain" line, and they told me that it was unrealistic in that military personnel would not add extra chatter when engaging an enemy. So that went bye-bye.
Whoops. Tell you what. If you want it back in there, I might make a special focuspuller edition for you. Or if you're handy with the editing, you can pop it back in easy enough.
I didn't really mind the scene, I was just trying to get into the story a little faster. Really, I didn't mind the movie as it was released (minus a couple of real cringe-worthy moments), so it's not like I was trying to dismantle the movie out of hatred for it, I was just trying to tighten it up. The hard cut will probably remove the whole soldiers intro scene, and just go right into Blackout heading towards the base.
I hope you guys are finding this, I would like some feedback on it, to possibly apply to the next cut.

The sound of the GAU-8 gun is so fucking awesome and I was disappointed when I saw Transformers and found out they used some dumb standard machine gun sounds or something. The A-10 in Transformers sounds like it's firering a bb-gun or something. Did you by any chance change this for your edit? Probably not. Damn, why didn't I think of this before you finished your edit.
Anyway, I'll download your edit and check it out. It sounds pretty cool.

I will say that I thought I read that you removed The "perfect day" scene among soldiers, I hope this not the case. Sappy or not, it's one of the few human moments that really works in the film for me. It also helps humanizes them instead of them simply bieng Micheal Bay puppets.

The ideal avatar size is 80 x 80. I'm working on a way to have the avatar centered in its position rather than flush top/left so smaller avatars look better.
I could force the image size and let the browser stretch it out, but it would be ugly.

My problem seems to be not 80 by 80 but in a file size limit. No matter what I do I can't get the file size down to 5k or below, any chance of increacing the file size?

About the release itself I have two comments. First, it's nice to see the small improvements. The new hand, and the new Death Star background in the Tie fighter scene (which I suggested). Second, I would like to touch on something that I expressed my opinion about before. I don't think it's appropriate to put you name in the front line of the credits. In the case of official rereleases, new credits follow the old ones, when they are included at all. Rick McCallum who is an outspoken producer of the Special Editions and new Trilogy, even he doesn't have his credit in the front line. I don't want to throw out the "I'm a professional in this industry"bollocks, but "credit status" is very important for many reasons. From that perspective, credits are a list of people with a collective of many many years of professional experience. So for someone to come along and add their name contradicts that and can be seen as a bit of a slap in the face. Not to be dramatic but I think a good example is taking a Picasso painting, putting it on Photoshop, tinkering with it, and then adding a name along side his.
Let me be clear, I don't take offence to you putting your name in the credits. You are the "Producer" of this "restoration" and that's valid. Obviously so is acknowledging other people that have worked on this as well as support from fans and family. But I don't think putting your name, 4 or 5 names from the Director, is appropriate or completely respectful.
I mean no offence in any way, but I hope you take to heart what I have said.

The track was originally part of their 1981 album My Life in the Bush of Ghosts. It is considered to be one of the inspirations behind modern music sampling. The album was recorded on analogue equipment and features samples of "found objects", Arabic singers, radio DJs, and an exorcism. The album was released in February 1981 and rereleased as a 25th anniversary expended edition in 2006 (March in the UK, April in the US). With the new release seven new tracks were included. What it does not include however is the track Qu'ran. What made the track so controversial is that fact that it features Algerian Muslims chanting sections of the Qur'an. David Byrne had this to say in an interview about not including the track in the release:
"Way back when the record first came out, in 1981, it might have been '82, we got a request from an Islamic organization in London, and they said, 'We consider this blasphemy that you put grooves to the chanting of the Holy Book.' And we thought, 'Okay, in deference to somebody's religion, we'll take it off.' You could probably argue for and against monkeying with something like that. But I think we were certainly feeling very cautious about this whole thing. We made a big effort to try and clear all the voices, and make sure everybody was okay with everything. Because we thought, 'We're going to get accused of all kinds of things, and so we want to cover our asses as best we can.' So I think in that sense we reacted maybe with more caution than we had to. But that's the way it was."
Qu'ran is featured as part of the temp score in early mixes of the film (the song choice is credited to Ridley Scott), however with the new release of Blade Runner: The Final Cut, The "dancing girls with hockey masks" scene was reinstated back into the film and with it the temp music thus making it part of the "official" soundtrack.
Qu'ran will be included in this collection.

I've had a slight delay. Some of the tracks that I had finished were erased since my back-up hard drive decided to die on me, and so I've been forced to start over. But of course not start over completely. Things have been coming along quickly and I'm really feeling at home working with Audition for Restoration and Mastering. Disc 1 should be completed shortly.

It's worth pointing out that there are a few elements of sound that are used as sound effects in the film but are in fact part of Vagelis's score. These are things like chimes, bells and synth created beeping. Like a lot electronic musicians of his time, Vangelis creates music like a sound designer, he builds layers. Some elements are used, some aren't. An example of this for this collection is 2 different versions of the Main Titles track which I'm releasing.
The so-called "Esper Edition" is actually the worst example in terms of material, construction and a coherent listening experience (which it isn't). It's a kind of fan edit. It uses tracks from already released bootlegs, and combines it with the one disc official release, clips from the film recorded from VHS, and a sound effects track. The sound effects track was recorded for the 1992 "director's cut". It was created for international distributers for language dubbing (it contains all the audio except the dialog track). All these elements are laid on top of each other. But not of it is anything that hasn't been released before.
There's a lot of bootlegs out there with between 1 to 4 disc releases. All have different variations of the other releases, others even have sound effects from the video game included. But almost none of the music is playing on the correct speed and or course none of it is complete.
As well as obviously the new official releases my sources include copies of analog tape. These are great because even although quality has degraded over the years they include a few sound elements that I haven't heard before. It's also simply better for this kind of editing.

This is a preview of the cover. I did several designs but this is the one I liked the most. The image is not shown at full quality but you get the idea. On a side note, the background is not grey it's black. It's simply how the 3d templete makes the image appear.
