Star Wars: Rogue One - * Non Spoiler Discussion Thread *
Time

tbh, I wasn’t surprised Rey understood the falcon better than Solo did, even when I missed the reference to the compressor the first time around, mainly because 1) I assumed it was dumb luck, rather than her knowing the falcon better than Han, and 2) I read a lot of Darths & Droids before watching TFA, making anybody understanding the falcon better than Han seem reasonable.

As for her being so competent at flying, *shrug*. So was Luke, and he was justified by having him “shooting Womp Rats on [his] t-16 back home”, which looks more like a mini lambda than an X-wing.

The mind trick to me made sense, if only because the scene alluded to the idea that the Force is more of a state of mind than a “skill”. Rey in that scene looks like she’s trying to calm herself so she can just let the Force do its thing.

EDIT: Why are we TFA arguing on this thread? Let’s take it to a different thread; this one should be for Rogue One only, really.

I need a clearer definition of “casual” fan to determine what I am.

To go with a phrase I like using on other discussion boards: It’s all relative. To somebody who only watches the movies when it comes out, and then doesn’t do anything beyond that, the fact that we’re on a forum at all might make us look like we’re die-hards. To somebody who reads everything there is to Star Wars and is keeps up with absolutely verything Star Wars related, this forum might be full of “filthy” casuals.

Personally, I consider myself somewhat more invested than a “casual moviegoer” but not that invested. I like the odd book or spin-off series. I enjoy the X-Wing Miniatures game. However, I’m not avidly looking forward to every release, or base my life around it. If Star Wars stopped existing, I still have other things to enjoy and discuss with others.

Something that I guess I never really put much thought into before but Leia’s reaction to her home being vaporized and her father being murdered is really muted, in retrospect. Her recording makes it very clear her father is intended to be on Aldreraan but I wonder if they will retcon it to leave it ambiguous as to whether he might have been ‘en route’ to the planet or if they will make it clear he has safely returned (only to be blown into a billion tiny bits).

Bloodline opens with a memorial to Bail Organa, who was killed with the planet Alderaan.

Even if they leave it ambiguous, the lore already has established he’s been killed in the attack.

So At what point was Leia meant to bring Obi-wan to Alderan? Is there a reason that Obi-wan could not have been picked up because stealing the death star plans went wrong? Was the Tantive IV meant to intercept the plans or was it a last ditch effort to get the death star plans and it interfered with Obi-wan being picked up?

In the Radio play, the plan was that while on a “mercy mission” the Tantive IV would stop around the planet the plans were stolen from (I forget if it was named) before jumping off to Tatooine to pick up Obi-Wan. It might have worked too if they had plans to deal with being scanned by Imperials before they tried to execute it.

I don’t know if that will be the case this time, but we’ll see.

This is a thought I’ve had in the back of my mind for some years now, but only now did it really come to the fore.

The big thing that distinguishes the Yuuzhan Vong (aside from their poorly-explained absence in the Force and organic technology) is their whole schtick as a race of devout masochists. Yet this aspect of their culture has never really been conveyed through any of the visual depictions of them.

Look at the image above. Do they really appear like they ritually disfigure themselves? Sure, they got tattoos, but that’s nothin’. They just look like stereotypically ugly humanoid aliens.

I don’t know. The guy in the front at least looks like he cut up his nose pretty badly compared to the others behind him. Otherwise, I see what you mean.

On that second comparison pic, the one with Han escorting the other ships, isn’t that the prototype design for the Pirate ship? judging by what materials the comic team had access to, I’m not surprised they got that design.

Yes, it does kind of look like it. But then again, that design was re-used for the Blockade Runner in the opening of ANH, so it’s probably just supposed to be one of those. There’s another ship visible underneath it which look very similar as well.

It was reused for the Blockade Runner, but the blockabde Runner had some modifications before being used (Mostly that cockpit, and I recall some of Cantwell and McQuarrie’s concept art had that antenna.)

So While I think it’s supposed to be based on the Tantive IV’s design (I don’t know if they were called CR-90’s yet, but I think the Tantive name was out there by this time), they didn’t seem to have the in film model as a reference to work with.

Out of curiosity: Were there ever any country specific comics anywhere for Star Wars? For example, I know Marvel in the UK had a couple stories in some of their other licenses that didn’t appear in the US comics. Did this happen for star Wars too?

Luke kinda talks to Artoo on Yavin before the Death Star attack (when the tech asks if he’d rather use another droid), but it’s a pretty simple exchange (and it kinda feels like Luke doesn’t really understand Artoo’s reply).

That’s the only one I can think of.

The big one I was thinking of was from a deleted scene, wherein Luke is watch the battle over tatooine before running off to tosche station to show his friends. He talks to the droid he’s with, but again, it’s a simple exchange of Luke trying to tell the droid to “Get it in Gear,” before leaving it for scrap. In the radio play it was expanded to a full conversation but still seems to be a little one sided.

What Does Everyone Here Think of Star Wars?

ROTJ was a bunch of movies packed into one. Aside from the Death Star (Which might have been better served not appearing in Star Wars at all until now), it really feels like it tries to close too many threads at once. If Lucas could’ve gotten away with more movies in his franchise, we might have had a more natural progression to the events of ROTJ.

Except for the Ewoks. Wookiees would work significantly better. I blame the Holiday Special.

If you’re talking about Pablo Hidalgo’s 14 part tweet, it didn’t read like prequel apologetics to me, just clarification.

He does multipart tweets for a number of things. I remember him doing such a multipart tweet on account of why the Death Star didn’t just park next to the fourth moon of Yavin, when simply saying “dramatic tension” is equally valid of an answer.
