I'm not holding my hopes out for Universal to do a better master of theatrical cut from the OCN. They've been using the same transfer for years, and I doubt they'll do anything different.

I've been wondering if "AoD" might be a part of Universal's deal with ShoutFactory.  When you look at all of the other titles they've optioned (including Raimi's "Darkman"), it would seem to be a natural continuation of that agreement.  And, since Shout has also been licensing MGM titles, releasing that DC in 1080p doesn't seem so impossible.

Eh, maybe I'm just chasing Leprechauns again :/

Shout use the masters universal give them same with criterion (mostly)

Great project. I'll put the BD25 with the USA Blu-ray release. Be sure not to degrain it or use EE.

Never would I

Nice. What about subtitles? Preferrably English SDH.

Yep SDH from the BD

Found a HDTV version 1080i but low detail, if correct I went too far on the bleach bypass

BD

HDTV

Look like the BD has more detail and less compression.  Good to know!

Anyone compared "shawn of the dead"?

I already have the HDDVD of the thing, but based on the discussions in this thread, Ill be picking up Apollo 13 and the XBOX drive as well.

My HD DVD player is sitting at my dads house being used as his regular DVD player, and My HDVDs have been sitting in the garage.

I bought an HD DVD player a few years back and bought Grand Prix, Forbidden Planet and The Thing.  Three of my favorite movies, which at the time were not on Blu.

Like Hot Fuzz the BD is better

I am very interested in restoring the Criterion edition of Akira (#151).

Not only it has the original English dub in uncompressed 16/44.1 PCM Dolby Surround, possibly the best copy of the dub available, but the color timing is much, and I mean MUCH better than the later DVD releases, and even the new Blu-ray! I don't know if that is how Akira was meant to look like, but the colors have more life and the whites are very bright! I own the 3-disc CAV Laserdisc, with all the awesome supplements. It's definitely an LD treasure.

Months back, I've uploaded the very first 54 seconds of the LD on YouTube, to test out my LD-to-digital conversion skills. It contains the opening shot of the nuclear explosion, which, in my opinion, has more color fidelity than the DVD/BD (you can try to compare the two with yourself, if you want).

It is one of my top priorities to release a Criterion DVD preservation of Akira on a two-disc set, but I currently do not have the enough equipment to do a proper, deserving transfer.

The DVD, HDTV and BD have different timing

Im curious about the HD DVD of GRAND PRIX.  It is confirmed that the HDDVD and BluRay use different transfers, but I have not read anywhere if one is better than the other.

Im pretty sure the HD DVD has standard Dolby digital, wheras the BD had Dolby Digital Plus.  Not sure if there are other differences

Really the BD had the same master as the dvd http://caps-a-holic.com/hd_vergleiche/comparison.php?art=part&x=451&y=281&action=1&image=0&cID=675&cap1=3907&cap2=3897&lossless=#vergleich
