Thanks for linking to my review. I used to post around here years ago. The DVDTalk back-end allows me to see how my reviews are being accessed, and I figured I'd pop back in.
What the heck? If the TV cut looks that good, then I don't see why the review bashed it. I think it looks, well, DVD quality anyway. I was expecting a blurrier, washed out look (like Anchor Bay's extended footage for Army of Darkness).
Plus, it sounds like some post production stuff probably visually altered the movie to an extent.
DVDTalk reviewed the disc and it is a low-res TV edition without profanity/brief nudity. I think mcfly's cut deserves to be preserved. This also explains why Universal opted against seamless branching, because they didn't want to/were unable to restore the extended footage.
I still want to take a look at this edit, I have for a long time but I seem to forget about this board frequently, but Universal has announced they're doing it themselves. Hooray!
I read on IMDb that the Sci-Fi TV version of Darkman II is superior to the DVD version (and possibly the Director’s Cut). Additionally, there was of course the “Darkman” TV pilot, which I’d love to see. Seems like it’d make for a good DVD. Hopefully I’m not the only one interested.
So, I just finished watching the Unrated version, which is of course not out until Tuesday so any real work on this would have to wait until it’s officially on the shelves, but I wanted to put it out there. I don’t have any editing tools myself, but I wouldn’t be averse to learning, either, if anyone wants to offer their help.
In any case, the Unrated is much more than just added salty language here and there, it is a fairly alternate cut of the film. Now, some of the language that’s been “reinstated” is clearly alternate takes, but I think Fox went back to the dubbing studio and overdid it a little, not to mention a few of the things I liked about the theatrical version are missing. What I want to do is create an edit that covers the best of both worlds, which seems like it would be fairly easy. Again, I have no editing tools myself, and even if I did this would be my first time, but I could easily either take direction from someone else on how to do it or provide a list of what I think could be changed for the release.
If anyone is interested, let me know – although, again, it might be understandably until Tuesday and everyone else has gotten a chance to see the Unrated version before I hear back.
There are too many Howard the Duck presentations on this board for me to figure out which one it is but someone brought it up on another board, asking if it was legit and I figured if it’s from here someone definitely wants to know that this little site in the middle of nowhere is hawking your release.
