The Evil Dead Treasures Collection (Released)

Many thanks to Lacerated for some uber-cool ED2 images that will most definitely be on the set. Ash595, I'd still be very interested in those pictures if you want to send me a PM, or alternatively I can PM you my e-mail address.

Just to note as well that I caved in and e-mailed the YouTube uploader (who it turns out is actually Ira Gallen, the director, and not John Gallagher) to see if it would be possible to get DVDs of the Raimi/Tapert interviews. (Though I didn't mention they would be part of this project.) We'll see.

Yes please to both! :D

Whilst Crimewave was in production, Raimi was developing Evil Dead 2: Army Of Darkness, or as it was actually called then, Evil Dead: 1300 AD. (It was also for a time called The Medieval Dead.) But Dino De Laurentiis persuaded them to keep part two in the cabin and wait until the third one to do the 1300 AD storyline. Raimi talks about this a bit in the 1987 Directors interview listed above.

The Evil Dead Treasures Collection (Released)
Time

EDIT: The Evil Dead II discs are now finished.  Please go to Page 2 to see how you may get a copy and how you can help with future discs in the Evil Dead Trilogy DVD Companion!

http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b208/djsmokingjam/ed2dvdident.jpg

DISC FORMATS: Single-layer DVD-R / NTSC / 4:3 / Dolby Digital 2.0

This is part of a larger project I’m working on about the Evil Dead trilogy to gauge how much interest and support there is for such a project. The Evil Dead II discs are the closest to completion, and as such is a pilot for a six-disc Evil Dead DVD Companion.

Many thanks go to See No Evil and The Griff for providing content for these discs – but it isn’t finished yet! Disc One has been completed, but I am still collecting the content for Disc Two at the moment. The contents listed below are what I have at the moment (along with descriptions that will be on menu screens preceding the videos) – but any suggestions/donations are definitely wanted! Also, suggestions for content relating to the other films would be greatly appreciated.

Because the majority of these are from bootleg sources, the quality is variable to say the least - The Directors interview is sourced from YouTube, and a few of these are shaky VHS rips. But that’s better than nothing at all!

(NOTE: Once these are finished, they’ll have to be distributed initally as a PIF chain as I’m unable to seed a torrent or post them up on Rapidshare.)

DISC ONE

BEHIND-THE-SCENES CAMCORDER FOOTAGE

The following behind-the-scenes footage was shot by special effects foreman Vern Hyde and his crew on the set of EVIL DEAD II in Wadesboro, North Carolina in 1986. It offers intimate glimpses into the filming of key effects scenes in the movie (such as “The Blood Flood”, “The Rotten Apple Head”, and Ash flying into the time portal) as well as the fun the cast and crew had making it. It is not to be confused with the footage Greg Nicotero shot on the set, as seen in “Behind The Screams” and “The Gore The Merrier”.

SCENES FROM THE WORKPRINT

This is an incomplete workprint of EVIL DEAD II, consisting of the first twenty and last ten minutes of the film. It features temp music (Joseph Lo Duca’s score had not been completed yet), original production audio (pre-ADR) and a small selection of short deleted scenes. This workprint is taken from a poor quality VHS, so the quality is variable at best, but as a curiosity for EVIL DEAD fans it is essential viewing.

DISC TWO

BEHIND THE SCREAMS

This compilation of the camcorder footage Greg Nicotero shot on the set of EVIL DEAD II was an extra on the 1998 blood red Elite laserdisc of the film. It was replaced on subsequent DVD issues by “The Gore The Merrier”, which features some of the same footage alongside new interviews with Nicotero, Howard Berger and Robert Kurtzmann. However much of the material in “Behind The Screams” has yet to make it to an official DVD release, including footage of the deleted “Evil Ed Chop Top” sequence being shot.

UK TV SPOTS

These two TV spots, starring Sam Raimi and Jonathan Ross, were broadcast on British TV in 1987 to promote the theatrical release of EVIL DEAD II by Palace Pictures. The ads were written and directed by Christopher Fowler of The Creative Partnership, who is perhaps best known as the cult author of such best-selling books as Spanky. They had previously been seen within the exclusive “Dead Good Marketing” featurette on Anchor Bay UK’s EVIL DEAD DVD boxset.

IN REVIEW 1987 INTERVIEW

This interview with Sam Raimi (who is on top comic form here) was broadcast on the NY cable television programme IN REVIEW in early 1987 (despite the on-air display saying 1986) during the promotion of EVIL DEAD II. The young interviewer is Gregg Goldstein, who is now the New York correspondent for The Hollywood Reporter. (Note the video cuts out abruptly before the end.)

THE DIRECTORS 1987 INTERVIEW

In 1982, Sam Raimi and Rob Tapert shot their first television interviews to publicise EVIL DEAD for a NY cable access programme called The Directors. The presenter was John Gallagher, formerly a writer for Film Comment whose floor Raimi had crashed on during post-production. Five years later, Raimi returned to The Directors to promote EVIL DEAD II, and the resulting interview is full of in-jokes and rarely-aired stories. It is sourced from a YouTube video, so the quality is far from perfect.

STEPHEN KING’S THIS IS HORROR 1989 INTERVIEW

This interview with a relatively sedate Sam was filmed for the syndicated TV series STEPHEN KING’S THIS IS HORROR (aka WORLD OF HORROR, or SHADOW THEATRE). It is from the only DVD available of THIS IS HORROR, released in the Netherlands, and features burnt-on Dutch subtitles as a result.

Rough drafts of two of the menus (note the second one has since been edited to improve contrast and correct spelling/grammar):

Alien: Resurrection - The Experiment (* unfinished project *)
Time
So I'm the only one who quite likes Alien Resurrection?

Okay, so it sucks as a follow-up to the previous three, but if you see it more as another OTT, blackly comic Jean Pierre Jeunet film in the style of Delicatessen and City Of Lost Children, it's a lot of fun. I've learned to enjoy it a lot more than I did when I first saw it. It's also interesting to see how Joss Whedon (who hated Jeunet's approach to the material as well) later adapted some of the character types of the crew into the crew from Firefly/Serenity.

Mega Madness: The Ultimate Gremlins Companion (* unfinished project *)
Time
I've tried as well, but can't get it. Hopefully someone can record it off the telly.

Here's a more in-depth article from The Guardian:

http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/2008/apr/30/advertising.bt?gusrc=rss&feed=media

The Gremlins, the trouble-making critters that terrified smalltown America in the 1980s, have returned after 20 years to wreak havoc on Dragons' Den star Peter Jones in a TV ad for BT.

In the ad, which was created by ad agency Swarm, Jones is seen working alone late at night in his office.

As he struggles with computer problems and finds frayed and chewed wires, the Gremlins sneak around the office destroying all the IT gear.

With no IT support, Jones's office rapidly descends into a Gremlins free-for-all complete with fan-swinging antics by the critters.

Mick Hegarty, the marketing director of BT Business, said the company chose the anti-hero Gremlins because although "everyone loves them", there is "nothing worse than gremlins attacking your IT system and damaging your work".

Special effects company Artem created the 20 creatures for the ad, which required 28 puppeteers and technicians to operate the Gremlins and 100 litres of liquid latex and 75 litres of soft foam to make their bodies.

BT, which licensed the use of the Gremlins from Warner Bros, will also feature them in print, poster and online advertising during the eight-week campaign.

The ad, which breaks on May 5, promotes BT Business's 24-hour IT and communications support for its business customers.

Jones has replaced Gordon Ramsay as the face of BT's TV campaign promoting its business telecoms services.

The darkly comic film Gremlins took the world by storm when it launched in 1984.

In the film, Billy Peltzer is given the Christmas gift of a small cuddly creature called Gizmo that he must care for following three simple rules: no water, no food after midnight and no bright light.

When he breaks these rules Gizmo spawns a bunch of nasty, mean creatures, led by Stripe, that terrorise the town of Kingston Falls.

The film - which launched with the marketing strapline "Cute. Clever. Mischievous. Intelligent. Dangerous" - was executive produced by Steven Spielberg.

A sequel, Gremlins 2: The New Batch, appeared in 1990.

Though I have to say, as cool as this is, BT is one of the worst service providers when it comes to getting gremlins in the system, as the frequent problems our office has with Internet doubly proves...

Idea & Preservation Request: Beastmaster 2 (* unfinished project *)

Also, according to this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xWG4LU-8pn4
someone has a much better source for Quest for the Mighty Sword than I do.

Asaki, I'm the one who posted that video on YouTube. The source was a 700mb VHS-rip I got off an ed2k network ages ago. If you'd like a copy, send me a PM and we'll work out a trade or something. Having said that, there are other clips from the film on YouTube that are taped off a cable TV broadcast that probably are even better if it was taped to DVD-R.

Army of Darkness - The Primitive Screwhead Edition (Released)

Just as a follow-up to earlier enquiries in this thread about the source of the AB Director's Cut, and the deleted scenes that haven't made it to DVD yet (like Charles Napier as Ash's boss in an alternate intro), this old posting by Michael Felsher from the Mobius forums should shed some light. Not good news, unfortunately:

"ARMY OF DARKNESS
Q: Many readers believe or hope that there are better materials on that director's cut than those that were used. One reader mentions that the European version contains some of the footage and is supposed to be in very good shape. Could you describe if the search for materials for AOD included overseas resources, and clarify if you believe better materials were and/or are available?

A: For several months, both StudioCanal and myself literally searched the world for Director’s Cut film elements. The best we could find was a Japanese D2 of the cut international version with the apocalyptic ending. So to create the ARMY Director’s cut, we assembled the best elements using Bruce’s personal ¾” tape – the only existing element in the world of Sam’s original cut.

FYI, there were 3 edits of this film – Sam’s original version, the cut international version with the apocalyptic ending and the Universal version. The original production company destroyed all the ARMY outtake footage when they went bankrupt."

Then again, they obviously didn't look too hard if MGM found the original elements... ;)

Idea & Preservation Request: Beastmaster 2 (* unfinished project *)

Fun bit of trivia: for Quest Of The Mighty Sword, director Joe D'Amato cheaply reused the creature masks from Troll 2, which led to the film being retitled Troll 3 in Germany. Even more confusing since it's actually the fourth Ator film! A preservation of the German VHS under the Troll 3 with the English audio would be fun :)

I think Beastmaster 2 is actually out on R2, though it's probably a crappy fullscreen print if it is.

Army of Darkness - The Primitive Screwhead Edition (Released)

Haha, something funny I picked up last night while watching this that I'd never noticed before...

In the S-Mart ending, look at the right hand side of the frame, as the camera tracks in from the Deadite to Ash in the last "Hail to the king baby" shot; standing there is none other than Bridget Fonda as Linda, even though she's obviously meant to died at the beginning of the film! Guess they really were desperate for extras, which accounts for William Lustig and Bernard Rose hovering around in the background as S-Mart customers...

This is a great idea, looking forward to seeing how it all comes together!

I've got a bunch of Gremlins 2 tie-in books I collected when the movie was released if you're interested? Also how about including Chris Columbus' 1982 draft of the Gremlins script, which is much gorier and nastier than the final film (and inevitably inferior)? It's available online if you haven't found it already at http://www.horrorlair.com/movies/gremlins.html.

Army of Darkness - The Primitive Screwhead Edition (Released)
Time
Dr Gonzo, the new link I posted above from Mediafire has the cropped cover. (http://www.mediafire.com/?8yhjdzki9xp) Enjoy!

The Sci-Fi version really needs to be part of a custom ED boxset IMHO. It could be laid out as such:

Disc 1
Evil Dead 1 - rip from Japanese laserdisc with bluer colour tones? If not then maybe the "Book Of The Dead" fanedit ReverendBeastly was working on ages ago, if it was ever finished?
    Book Of The Dead trailer
Evil Dead uncut trailer (most DVD versions are missing the Knowby narration at the beginning!)

Disc 2
    ED2 workprint
    ED2 behind-the-scenes video
ED2 UK TV spots (starring Sam Raimi and Jonathan Ross)
Behind The Screams (featurette from the laserdisc)

Disc 3
    AOD Sci-Fi Channel version
AOD EPK and behind-the-scenes video (downloadable from Zooma Zooma's website)
European AOD trailer? (This might be on the MGM discs, don't know)

Disc 4
    Evil Dead The Musical
The Incredibly Strange Film Show (uncut!)
    Within The Woods

Any other ideas?
