Bill Hunt has just found out that the negative was conformed to the Special Edition. The man on the Steve Hoffman Forums that worked on the DVD back in 2004 said after reading Bill Hunt’s piece, ā€œI’ve been saying that since 2004ā€.

Well, atleast we have official confirmation that the original clippings have been maintained. That’s something

Who said the original clippings have been maintained? That’s not what was said at all.

10 years after Star Wars, the film Witches of Eastwick was released. What do those two have in common? Musical scores by John Williams. Believe it or not, Cher was the star of that film, which, of course, makes her the most obvious candidate to do a review of the original Star Wars in its unaltered form before its 4K UHD HDR 3D Blu-ray Digital VR release.

Now, I know what you’re thinking. But wouldn’t Cher be under an NDA? Well no, because REMEMBER she won an Oscar in 88 for Moonstruck, and, after last Sunday’s Best Picture kerfuffle with Moonlight, the accounting firm of Price Waterhouse Coopers, being in some deep shit, nullified all legal contracts. WHICH MEANS Cher’s NDA is up, but, she still needs to save face with Lucasfilm OBVIOUSLY because of her upcoming Sy Snootles anthology film (keep up, won’t you?).

So then how do we know all of this? HELLO of course she still wants fans to know what’s up, so she’s been sending coded signals for months via her Twitter account.

Just look at this tweet from February 2 (https://twitter.com/cher/status/827226043467456513):

FYI ARENA IS AMAZING.SO šŸŒ¬ā„ļø
Rehearsed on Stage,Sang,Danced. I’m still Somewhat of a clod. New opening costume…You’ll need smelling salts 🤣

Okay let’s break this down. So we all know that ā€œArenaā€ is referring to Season 1 Episode 18 of the original Star Trek. That’s not a coincidence. Notice how the word ā€œoriginalā€ is very similar to the word ā€œoriginalā€ in ā€œoriginal trilogy,ā€ or how the word ā€œStarā€ is very similar to the word ā€œstarā€ in ā€œStar Wars.ā€ Fascinating, right? She then says ā€œRehearsed on Stage,Sang,Danced.ā€ I don’t know what that means. But THEN she says ā€œI’m still Somewhat of a clod.ā€ the word ā€œstillā€ meaning the same - as in same as in the 70s - and notice the capitalized ā€œSā€ as in the capitalized ā€œSā€ in ā€œSEā€ which stands for ā€œSpecial Editionā€! The rest of the tweet of course refers to the new packaging and smellovision feature.

Now, stick with me here, because this one’s a doozy. On March 4, she tweeted this (https://twitter.com/cher/status/838273936848670720):

WATCHING 1ST STAR WARS IN THEATRE.SPECIAL EFFECTS OLD,BUT ā¤ļøIT.REMINDS ME OF 1st TIME. HANS,CHEWY,LUKE,OLD BEN,
šŸ‘‘LEIA,DARTH VADER,HYPERSPACE

Don’t let the caps lock distract you, she specifically mentions the words ā€œwatchingā€ and ā€œold.ā€ Put these two words together - ā€œwatching old.ā€ Watching old what Cher? Could it be an old movie? Could it maybe even be gasp Star Wars?

I guess we’ll all find out when she shows up at Celebration.

Was that supposed to be funny?

Most likely a private screening in her own theater. Which version? Probably the Special Edition. Unless she’s a film collector and has an original print

Maybe…but I doubt it. A hunch tells me Cher wouldn’t post about this if she had control over it.

So you think she saw this at some theater somewhere? And you think it’s the OOT?

It’s one possibility.

As I said elsewhere…either:

  1. She or someone she knows has a 35mm print.

  2. She was watching a public showing of a new print which may or may not be the OUT.

Look at the things she usually posts about - they’re all very, very political. If she decided to throw on a blu-ray in her own home theater, I don’t think it would warrant a tweet. That makes me think it was ā€œan event.ā€

Harmy's STAR WARS Despecialized Edition HD - V2.7 - MKV (Released)

The Star Wars trilogy films are easily the three most popular films unavailable on home video today. So there will always be unscrupulous people trying to cash in on the chasm between supply and demand, and unfortunately Despecialized makes it easy. The best leverage we have against unscrupulous dealers is to make sure all Star Wars fans know about Despecialized, and that it’s free – erode the demand for these bootlegs, in other words. Other than that, we’re just putting out fires on eBay until Star Wars enters the public domain and we can get a real commercial release – and none of us will live to see that day.

Unfortunately, there are too few people who have burners or know what to do with them. So they’ll rely on other people to do it because they can’t be bothered. The supply nor the demand will ever go away.

Disney may soon be making an entrance to UHD BD (as in April soon). From Bill Hunt:

According to the German BD site Bluray-Disc.de, Disney and Marvel have licensed Iron Man, Iron Man 2, and Iron Man 3 to Concorde Home Entertainment for release in Germany on the 4K Ultra HD format on 4/6, both individually and as a Steelbook trilogy. You can see more here and also here.

If this is true, it would seem likely that a U.S. release is also soon to be announced. After all, the 4K Ultra HD format is all-region. It’s very hard to imagine Marvel and Disney sacrificing potential sales here in the States due to enthusiasts importing copies.

We know that Disney has been waiting for more Dolby Vision capability to start appearing in 4K hardware before joining the format and, as we reported at CES last month, Sony, TCL, LG, Vizio, and Philips have all agreed to support Dolby Vision in their displays and players. The new Oppo UDP-203 player will also support Dolby Vision after a forthcoming firmware update.

We’ve reached out to Disney to see if we can find out more on this and we’ll let you know if and what we hear back from them.

I’m really surprised to hear Bill say something uneducated like that. Movies coming out in other regions (from other studios) is about as indicative of a stateside release as seeing it on cable in HD. Or being able to buy it streaming.

One really has nothing to do with the other.

It won’t cost that much, because most people wouldn’t pay that much. Economics.

It’s not inconceivable, assuming that it’s comprehensive (multiple cuts, all old special features). Look at the 6 film Middle Earth set- the MSRP is $800, but they’re ā€œdiscountingā€ it to $400 because literally no one would pay that much.

Why would anyone pay 400 dollars for that?

They wouldn’t. I’m just saying that studios do, at times, price these things absurdly high.

Obviously they have because it’s still for sale, now at $500.

I did a little window-shopping research and ran the numbers last night. For $799.99, I could – right now on Amazon – buy…

The Lord of the Rings Trilogy – Theatrical Edition BD set ($21.75)

The Lord of the Rings Trilogy – Extended Edition BD set ($48.99)

The Hobbit Trilogy – Theatrical Edition Blu-ray 3D Combo set ($97.89)

The Hobbit Trilogy – Extended Edition Blu-ray 3D Combo set ($106.98)

(And if you add up all those movie and extras discs, that comes to 48 discs of content – which is truly complete – as opposed to this set’s 30.) Plus…

The Lord of the Rings Trilogy 3-CD Soundtrack Collection ($30)

The Hobbit Special Edition soundtrack CDs ($20 each x 3 films = $60)

The ā€œArt of The Lord of the Ringsā€ hardcover books for each film ($44 each x 3 = $132)

The ā€œArt & Design of The Hobbitā€ hardcover books for each film ($30 each x 3 = $90)

If you’re following along at home (or the office) that comes to a subtotal of $587.61.

That leaves me with $212.38…

… which is almost enough to buy a hand-crafted prop replica of The Hat of Gandalf The freaking Grey from the WETA Workshop too (for $219 – see this link, and yes that’s it pictured up above there on the left side of the page. It’s kind of badass).

And I’ll build my own damn shelf to hold it all.

Yeah but who wants any of that crap? 😃

  1. Most 4K discs can be found for $25-30, the same price DVD or Blu-ray was at first.
  2. You’re telling me you wouldn’t pay $45 each for a 4k restoration of the OOT? I’d be first in line.

That boxed set with the extras retailed for, if memory serves, $250 in 1993. Figure that out with inflation. That was totally worth it back then.

About $415-420.

And, tbh, if they released the OT with all extras and documentaries, I’d pay it.
