Star Wars Episode I: Cloak Of Deception (Released)

If you have an extreme distaste of the PT, you should not watch it at all, theatrical AND fan-edited versions.

I do feel bad cause I’m generalizing quite a bit. I DO have an extreme distaste of episodes 1/2. I think they are awful in their theatrical form. Hal makes episode 1 a really fun fast paced Star Wars movie which is unbelievable. Episode 2 is the worst of the saga IMO so it’s quite hard to make it good but Hal does it. His ep. 2 edit is my favorite of all the different options (Republic Divided, Fall of the jedi, Attack of the Phantom etc.)

But ep. 3 is a whole different story that I should not lump with the other two prequels. My apologies.

It’s theatrical version is pretty damn good IMO on its own but Hal’s edit (with L8wtrs ending, sorry I respectfully disagree with Padme living) turns it into one of the best Star Wars movies IMO. It still is by far the darkest and most tragic episode of the saga. It really is quite emotional because of how much Anakins character is improved in these edits.

So all in all, I have a extreme distaste for the THEATRICAL versions of Episodes 1 and 2.

Quick Update:

I have ripped all the blu Rays and have finished the color correction for the FOTR Extended edition. I also have compeletly edited Two Towers. To me, the theatrical version is a near perfect adventure film but I feel it is the worst of the extended editions, so hopefully that helps explain to you all why I only chose to add one, but very essential scene.

The one added scene from the extended edition obviously is the beloved flashback with Boromir, Denethor and Faramir in Gondor. It accomplishes many goals at once by further exploring three major characters and overall, it is an essential scene that shouldn’t have been cut.

I will soon begin Return of the King and then Fellowship. I will be keeping quite a bit more extended footage in these two films.

Harmy's RETURN OF THE JEDI Despecialized Edition HD - V3.1

What about some kind of documentary that talks about your (Harmy’s) thoughts on the state of the original trilogy, public perceptions, historical importance, and also the technical process of creating the Despecialized Editions? So kind of like a longer version of the existing 20 minute one (which I’ve watched numerous times). Like it could be something that newer fans might watch and realize that there’s more to Star Wars than just the Lucas-approved Blu-rays.

I’d rather have a commentary. The 20 minute doc is fine as it is.

Everything in the new clip is spectacular except that Vader doesn’t look at Admiral Piett anymore which is a shame 😦

I posted this in reply to someone on facebook, just after i posted the clip.

Peter, you have to remember that most of the videos i post are never the final version. I don’t want to spoil the release by showing everything in it’s final stage

So, he does still look at Piette. 😉

Yay!

Batman Year One: Issue #1

I absolutely loved this first issue of the Year One run on Batman. It’s basically my first comic and I thought it was very interesting in how it differed from “Batman Begins”. Gordon in Year One is better than he is in Begins. I kinda missed Bruce’s training while he was gone in Year One but nevertheless was deeply satisfied with how he became Batman. Him finally deciding to ring the bell and become the Batman was golden. A couple memorable lines come to mind already (not perfectly accurate):

“Thanks Flass. You’ve shown me what it takes to be a cop in Gotham city.”

“I should’ve taken the train…I should see the enemy.”

Overall, I’m really enjoying it so far and look forward to continuing the Year One TPB.

So what do you guys think about how Luke and Leia look in this movie? It might be too late for 8, but if you could have made the choice, would you have asked mark and carrie to lose more weight for 8 and 9? Leia was supposed to lose weight for IV but she didn’t but she did lose weight later so they could still do it for 9.

Mark lost a lot of weight and he looks fantastic; especially with that majestic fucking beard he birthed. Carrie on the other hand…it’s not her weight that bothers me. Let’s say she has acquired some droid like features around her facial area.

Agreed.

Ranking the Star Wars films

I personally think the theatrical cut of ROTS does not match up to TFA. I do cringe at many moments and there are still just a lot of nitpicks that I have with the script. But when Hal’s and L8wtrs edit are mashed up it brings ROTS up to a whole new level for me.

It really lets many moments shine and cuts a ton of those awful lines. Hal restructures the order of events for Anakins fall effectively so that it’s more believeable and relatable. And it makes scenes that used to suck, far better. Anakins confrontation with Obi Wan at the end originally made me frustrated with how irrational and idiotic Anakin was being. But the edit really brings out genuine tradedy for me. His conversation with Padme is farrrrr better in the edit. And most of all, when Anakin is burning, with the music, Ewans acting etc., I feel such pain for both characters and feel such sadness for Anakin. By watching Hals episode 1,2 and a mashup of his and L8wtrs for 3, it actually accomplishes the main goal of what I wanted the prequels to do, which is relating to this character and feeling actual genuine pain and sadness for his turn to the dark side to make his turn back to the light, evermore effective. Not to mention the other gems that now can shine such as the opening space battle, the fight with dooku, the opera scene, Order 66, the beautiful diagoule-less scene before Anakin leaves to save palpatine etc.

All in all, I still think I would say TFA is a better movie than fanedited ROTS. But I really enjoy the fanedited ROTS and consider it on the same level as Jedi. I compeletly understand your opinions and they mean equally as much, it’s just this is my own opinion on the matter.

I can never understand how people can flip so completely on films (and music for that matter) that they once loved. The Phantom Menace was the first Star Wars film I ever saw at age 10 and I loved it. Even though I now realize it’s objectively a bad movie I still really enjoy watching it.

It’s called “maturity.”

And I’m not taking a shot at your age, I was 26 when I saw it in the theaters three times and loved it. But only because I wanted to. Then I found this place (and FE) and grew up.

So you’re not taking a shot at my age just my maturity 😉 (I’m joking, it’s all cool)
Yeah, I get what you’re saying but…I think that once I commit to liking something and develop a connection with it, I don’t lose that. My tastes continue to evolve and broaden as I get older but they aren’t overwritten - but that’s just me!

Casino Royale.

The best bad movie ever made.
The one film they should use to teach everyone what NOT to do. EVER. UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES.

I read ‘Casino Royale’ then skipped to the start of your review and mentally freaked out. Then I saw ‘1967’ and took a deep breath hahah…

IIRC, he thinks 2006 Casino Royale sucks too.

He thinks all the Daniel Craig Bond films suck. Which makes no sense.

Though my opinion is that Casino Royale and Skyfall are great movies, everyone’s opinion is still equally valuable.

I think I only saw the theatrical version of TTT a few times after the theater, which is why I didn’t voice my thoughts. I only own the Extended version, since I consider the Boromir scene essential. Let’s see, I’d cut the Massacre at the Fords of Isen, The Song of the Entwives (sadly), The Heir of Numenor, and Ent Draft. From part 2, cut One of the Dunedain, The march of the trees and Fangorn Comes to Helm’s Deep, Flotsam and Jetsam, and perhaps even The Final Tally.

As for TROTK, I quite prefer the theatrical version, with a few exceptions. The Decline of Gondor, The Fall of Osgiliath, Faramir’s extended comments on horseback, The Houses of Healing, Aragorn Masters the Palantir, The Captain and the White Lady, and The Land of Shadow could all remain in. None are essential, but they are welcome.

For TTT, I was thinking of cutting all the added tree beard boring material. And the Boromir scene is absolutely essential. I will also want to splice in as much of the extended blu Ray source during theatrical scenes for improved video quality and improved special effects.
