I wonder what the cast members would think about LFL's SE effort compared to this..... waves and impact indeed.

very e.x.c.i.t.e.d... can't wait to download this. I might even butter up some popcorn...

Congrats, Ady! Can't wait to jump on usenet tomorrow and download the fruits of your laborious-type laborings.

Edit : To the other usenet newbies: you'll need to familiarize yourselves with news servers, browsers, and the like.

You might try www.news.astraweb.com as your news server, a pay service with good server retention (e.g., the length of time posts are retained) or your internet provider (mine is Comcast, but their retention seems to be really bad). For a browser, I'm using "GrabIt!" which seems to be working pretty well. It will take some time coming up to speed on the subject, but it's cool when it works!

A good resource for terminology: TechSono

Rebel Scum helped me out in coming up to speed on the newsgroup thing here.

Happy gathering!

I'm not familiar with the 10th anniversary poster; do you have a flat picture of your DVD cover so we can better see the balance as it is now?

Hey, Paul. I know this is mostly off-topic, but in this thread here you stated that Premiere coould be tricked into taken in the Lagaryth codec by using an Avisynth file somehow. How does this work?

P.S. The link won't work for some reason, though the thread page does exist. Sorry. Here it is long-form: http://www.originaltrilogy.com/forum/messageview.cfm?catid=9&threadid=1434&STARTPAGE=17

Thanks for all of your help, Rebel Scum! Sorry that you had to repeat yourself about Astraweb before it got through to me. I was so overwhelmed yesterday by all things newsgroup.

I've signed up with Astraweb and am using the NZB I found through www.binsearch.info to download the glorious file right now!

Man, I love it when things go right! I can't wait to put this new material to work.

"But what's it all mean, Basil?"
http://img142.imageshack.us/img142/7788/whatsitmeanyr6.jpg

So, my head's rattling around with binary retention, rars, and pars, and I'm downloading Jambe Davdar's Returning to Jedi as a test of this newsgroup, movie-getting technology.

I've tried the a.b.hdtv.x264 group, but I haven't had any luck obtaining the 1080p ESIR version of Episode III; the 1080p-hv version wasn't available in the thread either.

I've also looked in a.b.starwars and a.tv.tech.hdtv. Comcast's retention is supposed to be up to 90 days for binary. I was able to locate the listings for all of the pieces for the "ESIR" file which Adywan was nice enough to point me to, but the NZB found no available files in a.b.hdtx.x264 to download. The movie is only 32 days old according to www.binsearch.info. So far, Comcast and Usenet servers have shown no more than 12 days of content in GrabIt!, and only 15 days via Usenet in Xnews.

Apart from posting my own request to newsgroups, can anyone help me out here? I was hoping to have my edit completed by the end of this month.

Searching for this stuff is taking forever. Thanks.

Thanks, Rebel Scum! I'm gonna give your suggestions a "go". I've finally found a newsreader, Xnews, which has an interface I like and allows me to view the message headers which have already been downloaded even while the rest are still being downloaded.

Surprisingly, News Rover and Ultrleecher, which the web-based service I'm using (usenet.com) links to had to download the headers FIRST before I could see ANYTHING. I think News Rover was corrupt or something, because, if I went to a different thread for messages, the messages downloaded in the other thread were no longer accessible, and the "stop" button greyed out and was unuseable.

Long story short, thanks again; I'm going to try it your way.

Should have General Grevious been a reconstructed Darth Maul?
Time
Interesting that this is being brought up. I was perusing a Star Wars book at Borders Books, I think it was, and Lo and behold! there was an artist's rendering of Darth Maul as a very Grievous-esque half-cyborg.

Whether or not that was an official Lucasfilm consideration for the movie or not, I don't know. Seems like a distinct possibility given the fact that Grievous was developed late in the Episode 3 scripting process.

Okay. So I'm a noob trying NewsRover as my newsgroup software, and is it supposed to be this difficult to find content?

I've got the a.b. correct, but when I "get new message bodies" and have let it build for a while, I can't seem to get to the actual messages. Have I overloaded ny system with the 2 million messages that the service has retrieved?

Should I try yet anothe piece of software (I've tried 2 or 3 through this point)?

Well, things aren't going as well in the land of HD uprezzing as I would like. My initial approach didn't give me the results I was hoping for.

This first image was the result of a convoluted process involving a DVCPro tape deck which upscales DV to 1080i.

I tried two more approaches, and both worked okay. Neither is what I really was hoping for, though.

Red Giant Instant HD Uprez in Premiere Pro using an additional sharpen (the red, blue and green specs are there because I was using a trial software version).
http://img184.imageshack.us/img184/1434/redgiantuprezjv5.jpg

VirtualDubMod HD Uprez Output Frame Export using resize, deinterlace, general convolution and maybe 1 other thing (can't remember right now).
http://img184.imageshack.us/img184/3846/virtualdubmoduprezgh8.jpg

Does anyone have any tips, tricks or other suggestions? Can I expect it to get any better than either Red Giant or VirtualDubMod?

I really wanna use some uprezzed footage to create new shots for my edit, but I'm starting to fear that I might not be able to.

Can I expect it to get any better than either Red Giant or VirtualDubMod?

Update : I now have, and am proudly typing from, my new suped-up box (courtesy of my compu-phile brother). Editing is again underway.

I'm excited about some of the possibilities presented by the Hi-Def hardware uprezing I was able to do at the office; this uprezing will hopefully mean the creation of new shots never seen in the original movie; that is, shots created by zooming in on original shots.

The movie suffers quite a bit in some scenes from the lack of shot variety as usually seen in good Hollywood filmmaking. Other tweaks will likely be small zooms to adjust for framing. All-in-all, the hope is to create an edit which plays cinematically more like one of the GOUT movies.

Padme had a question for me, though...

Yes, my dear Padme, it will be. Oh, yes, it will be...

That's really cool to hear. Cinematically, the whole sequence seemed better to me with the "Temple Massacre" moved to another point in time. I appreciate your confidence that I had noticed the score omission, but I'm more of a visuals and story guy than a music guy.

Thanks for clueing me into the facts about the score.
