Video Games - a general discussion thread
Time

As you guys were talking about steam the other day, I had a look and got Star Wars: Empire at War + expansion for something like £3 ..... roughly $6 i think.....

Its not bad for that price, its got some odd vehicles like a tie-mauler thats good for running down rebel soldiers which is lots of fun! and they make a sort of squelchy noise when this happens which is quite satisfying.

Just wondering if anyone knows of a mod for the game that reduces all the units to only those seen in the movies? (although id like to keep the tie-mauler). Dont care if this unbalances the game!

Rebels with tanks??? bah!....

Ive been working on my xbox achievement - in a half ass'd kinda way - (its 600 and something now!) completed ODST singleplayer (on easy!) and now really enjoying the MW2 singleplayer - didnt think i would like it that much, but the imersion factor seems better on this game - actually feel like im part of a squad! and the sense of bullets whizzing past and explosions etc is pretty intense!

"Im a lead farmer M*****F*****!"

havnt tried multiplayer yet but ill finish the campaign first.

STAR WARS: EP V "REVISITED EDITION"ADYWAN - 12GB 1080p MP4 VERSION AVAILABLE NOW
Time

I spoke with an ol war buddy who served in an AT-AT during another battle (sorry, for his security i cant say which battle) this was basically his response:

During that period in time and space, Imperial forces were going thru cost cutting measures after the loss of the first Death Star. There was the huge debt that had been incurred during its actual construction and then payments to all the broken family's that resulted from such a massive loss of (brave) life who were aboard the space station at the time of its demise.

One way Imperial Commanders could save cost's deploying AT-AT's was to have them built without armor protection to the top of the vehicle.

It was determined that Rebel craft were not capable of dive-bombing, it was safe from attack in this area and it was therefore an unecessary expenditure to have armor there.

case closed, move along!

Possessed Return of the Jedi-* Resurrected!!*
Time

Just seen your clip - looks good, I havnt seen the original movie for a while so all i noticed was the rancor had been cut out, but will watch it again for the changes mentioned above - cutting the rancor is good and looked like a seamless cut. I wouldnt miss the rancor scene at all...

On the other hand, I would say be even more drastic with the cuts - I think much more could be removed from the palace scene - how would it look if you removed everything from the droids entering the palace untill Luke enters.

ie....cut from Darth vaders arrival at the death star to Lukes arrival at Jabbas Palace. Wouldnt that make it more mysterious and a darker Tone?

i havnt looked to see if it would work tho.

Anyway just my thoughts, will enjoy following your work.

I was too old for power rangers too - but maybe i would have prefered zyurorangers or whatever!

Also saw your review for return of the jedi! wow, yup! totally agree the han rescue sequence also completely ruins the impact of the intensity and pain that confronts our beloved heroes during empire strikes back... by having Han rescued near the beginning of the following film.... what were they thinking?

Better to just announce that Han was rescued by Luke Skywalker in the opening crawl and have good ol han back in the very first scene. At least then they could have made a more focused film.

edited just for xhonzi!

Reboot the EU
Time

Ok the only way we can reboot the EU is to pretend undo it! never existed - I urge each and everyone of you to burn every EU star wars book you can get your hands on..... Do what must be done, show no mercy - buy every star wars book on amazon/ebay and burn them on a big bonfire!! have some fireworks too! a few beers, a bbq - make the evening/day the most fun these travesties to the star wars legacy ever inspired!! and in 30-40 years maybe it will be like these novels from hell never existed.......... wooo!

uh...wheres my medication??

edit: ....but after i've re-read:

Rogue Squadron

Wraith Squadron

The Black Fleet crisis trilogy

and The New Rebellion ..... I've just bought them off amazon and want to see if they're any good this time around - although i do actually remember enjoying Rogue Squadron and Wraith Squadron.

I also like:

Splinter of the minds eye (left overs from a rough draft of star wars, and would have been the low budget sequel to the original film- if it hadnt of done so well at the box office..... interesting for mostly that reason - for me anyway) (Ref: The secret history of star wars - Michael Kaminski)

Allegiance - The only Timothy Zhan novel i actually like, is one many people seem to think is his weakest. I like it becuase its like the reverse of a star wars movie - Stormtroopers are given the main story and the rebels are just in the background getting in the way! genius! ...ok there are some issues with the stormtroopers deciding to be do-gooders but it still doesnt put me off...

Death troopers: Loved it! i guess mostly cos its got zombies in it but its still star wars.....

The only other star wars novels i'd buy (to keep... not to burn) are ones set between episode 4 & 5, and possibly the old republic novels if the first one is good (didnt like darth bane novels, not a fan of Jedi Knights/Sith they are story breaker super-heros/villains) ... because the playing field (after the original film) at this point is still open to creative talent - Lukes not a jedi, Han is a smuggler and Leia is well.....just Leia. Oh yeah and Vader is not Lukes Dad! and was never supposed to be!!! Luke and Leia are not brother and sister... The "Other" that Yoda speaks about in Empire strikes back was supposed to be someone who is not introduced untill episode 7 ........but george lucas got bored halfway thru making Empire Strikes back cos too many people were challenging him and his wife left him for maybe those reasons and he wanted to wrap up the whole thing and be rid of it which brings us to: Return of the Jedi

references from this book which also contains snippets of publically released official interviews :

...um sorry im all out of medication....doh! and the shameless plugging

Gaffer Tape's YouTube Reviews of Awesome Candy-Creating Goodness! (The Facts of Life/Star Trek III Conspiracy!)
Time

Hey cool thread and TV's Frink hasnt derailed it yet......oops! ill probably edit that bit out.

anyway on the subject of Geekiness i too enjoy most of the things xhonzi mentioned. Except we have Syfy over here.

Ive been trying to get into anime too for years and so far the only ones i really like are:

Applessed Ex Machina (A glorious 3D cell shaded type animation woohoo!)

Vexille (same style as above but a bit boring....might be worth a fan edit as the action scenes a pretty good)

Ergo Proxy - Must have been a TV series i think but only 12 episodes, really good - post apocalyptic, dystopian and a cool yacht (boat) that can sail across land??

Thats it---basically given up, Ive downloaded Batman Beyond and gonna se what thats like.

As for comics, Ever tried 2000AD? (Brit based, but heard its available in USA) - Judge Dredd, ABC Warriors, Rogue Trooper, Slaine & Strontium Dog are cool but theres loadsa other titles nowadays.

DOh! I cant watch Utube at work, so i'll check the reviews later, shame theres no Princess Leia turning into Wonderwoman but anyway....
