Info & Help Wanted: Article on Fan Edits
Time

I’m going to be doing an article on fan edits for the next issue of my magazine, Cashiers du Cinemart. I plan on reviewing/discussing flicks such as BATMAN DEASSIFIED / STAR TREK: IN THY IMAGE / STAR TREK: KIRKLESS GENERATION / MATRIX DEZIONIZED / SUPERMAN: RIC and more (depends on what I can get my hands on. This will touch on the Fan Edit phenomena via the STAR WARS edits (I wrote about the various Phantom Edits of SWE1 a few issues back).

Why tell you all this? Well, I’m looking for opinions from the editors themselves – why they do it, what they’re particularly happy about, their dream projects, their fame/infamy/identity.

I’m also interested in hearing from the folks, like me, who are fascinated by this “flaw fixing”.

For more info on the magazine, the online version is available for perusal at http://www.cashiersducinemart.com

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Best,
Mike White

Idea & Info: a Dune Fan Edit thread...
Time
Not to be cocky but the article by Scott Sentinella from Cashiers du Cinemart ("Only The Strong Travel This Deep" is a good resource as well. I found Sean Murphy's article lacking -- unusual for the Video Watchdog pieces wherein they compile all of the scenes in a marred film (a la FIRE WALK WITH ME).

I'd been playing with the idea of a fan edit for a while as it's my habit to watch the theatrical and TV cuts about once a month. I also have a sick habit of collecting the various releases from Brasil, France, Germany, etc. I'd be up for collecting all of the various additional docs about the making of the film into one or two discs as a supplemental to any fanedits made.

In my plans, the following would happen:

- Removal of pedantic voice-overs from the Smithee version (esp. the beginning prologue and the horrible introductions of Dr. Yeuh, etc).
- Reinstating Amidala's introdution / voice overs (otherwise, she has *one* line)
- Adding back any violence / distastfulness from the Theatrical into the Smithee ("A little bit of spittle")
- Correcting the order of the scenes where they fall out of line from Theatrical to Smithee (using Theatrical as the "proper order").
- Using the Emporor's dialogue from the Theatrical when talking to the navigator
- Removal of the extra "The water of life" on the audio track during the scene or fhe young sandworm's demise.

While I won't offer my left nut for a copy of Fanfiltration's edit, I would beg on bended knees for a copy. My wife is thoroghly unimpressed with the amount of time/energy I spend downloading and watching these edits to write about 'em (for the next issue). That might help shed some light on the subject as we watch DUNE about once a month (alternating between the Smithee and Lynch versions).

@Editors (esp. Fanfiltration) - Will this be redone come January with the non P&S bits from the new release?

And, finally, I *like* the weirding modules, BTW.

Episode 3: Fan Editing Ideas Discussion
Time
Please forgive me if this has been covered before -- I'm new to the group and have just gone through all sixteen pages of this thread.

I've only watched SITH once -- couldn't stomach a second viewing -- but what stuck in my craw the most was...

- I couldn't tell Padme was preggers when we first see her so it seems like she gestates those twins in about a fortnight.

- The Emperor tells Grevous that he should move the seperatist leaders to Mustafa and then we have tons of scenes and Grevious still hasn't moved those guys... This time around it feels like weeks have gone rather than days or even hours -- it didn't sound like he was joking around or giving even a "When you get to it, get those guys over to Mustafa." Thought it'd be taken care of much faster. This action is slowed down horribly by all of the incessant Padme/Annakin scenes in between. If memory serves, it took about a half hour between Grevious appearances.

- Not sure if anything can be done about this but the SFX of Temuera Morrison's head floating around on those clone bodies was just awful.

- Is there a cheesy line about Annakin "disarming" Dooku? If not, there needs to be one.

- "Don't make me kill you.... If you're not with me, then you are my enemy." Yeah, okay, I was getting the George Bush stuff before, you might as well say "Axis of Evil" here.

- "My litte green friend..." We'd be a lot better off without the Emperor cackling as he's trying to slay Yoda. "So funny this is you think your ass will I kick."

- Can someone reverse all of Yoda's sentences so he speaks forwards?

- The references to Qui-Gon need to be removed. Should be, "Got something for you to do on Tattoine -- think of a new name... Ben. Ben Kenobi! Like it?" "Well, uh," "Great! Knew it I did."

Personally, I liked the intercutting of the fight scenes -- reminded me of the good old days of porn where we'd have two sex scenes cut together. More effective and less boring that way.

How I wish there were more of a sense of Annakin revelling in the Dark Side -- really being shown how much fun and power he can have by embracing his wrath. Instead, he just seems to go into a sonambulistic stupor. Overacting is overacting whether it's emoting too much or just not enough.

I'd love if Annakin's dreams of Padme's child were more reminiscent of Alia's premature "enlightenment" scene in David Lynch's DUNE (still feel that he should have directed ROTJ).

Would have liked, too, to have more consideration put into "Darth Vadar"'s name -- "I shall call you.... Flounder." "Why Flounder?" "Why not?" Seems that giving Vadar his name after he was reborn (after his children were born) from flame would have been so much more dramatic and logical. I mean, uh, did Lucas forget that Vadar means "father"?

Also, during that big fight on the lava planet, did anyone else wonder when Annakin was going to have his finger bitten off by Smeagol? I just don't see why they could fight on those floating rocks and not catch on fire while Annikan immolates a few good feet away.

And, isn't it a shame that with all that technology that they hadn't learned to give C-sections "a long time ago"? Might have saved Padme's life.

The only part of ROTS that I actually enjoyed -- that gave me chills -- was Owen and Beru watching the double sunset on Tattoine. That music... it took me back to 1977.

PS If anyone wants to send me fan edits to write about -- I love 'em! Keep 'em coming!
