The Dark Knight Rises: No Riddler, No 3D
Time

Returns is a good Batman film. '89 really isn't. (but isn't bad by any means) Forever has aspects of a great Batman film, but throws in campiness and the neon. Begins is a new interpretation.

Phantasm is the Batman film. Period.

I find that it is fun simply to whisper "Michael Keaton" at random moments and make a quizzical face. This is a habit I picked up while playing Arkham Asylum.

Telly is best as Blofeld. Charles Gray was completely ridiculous in DAF.

The Mummy-another early Hammer, directed by Terrence Fisher and starring both Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee. I love this movie. It seems to be a combination of the plots of several of the Universal Mummy sequels, but betters them in every way. Pure, unabashed fun. Still wish that the image could be restored.

Dear You Only Live Twice, I draw the line at Bond being trained to be a ninja. Kthxbi.

First you must become ninja, Bond-san. This...is my ninja training school. This was obviously not written by Roald Dahl, was it? As much as we try to admit its sheer ridiculousness...our childhood bewilderment just won't let us. An army of ninjas attacking a hollowed out volcano rocket base? Blofeld has a face? A piranha pool? Little Nellie? If YOLT has any major flaw it might be that it is too fantastic.

The Haunting and Cat People. (the originals)

Two great horror films that show nothing.

And Simone Simon is smoking hot.

I love Cat People. It foreshadows much of what Tourneur did on Out of the Past. (in my eyes the definitive noir.)

Frankenstein and Bride of Frankenstein: James Whale brings something new to Uni's horror cycle with his first effort, but it still gets bogged down. His Invisible Man is better. Bride transcends the horror genre and is truly an American masterpiece. "We belong dead!"

"Friend?" (Okay, I couldn't resist typing it...)

Curse of Frankenstein-brilliant little film, and starts the Hammer horror cycle of with a bang. One of my personal favorites. Cushing is riveting as the Baron, who is finally the full focus of the film. The Creature does not appear to at least 45 minutes in and is never the real focus. As far as Frankenstein films go, this is only bettered by Bride. Really wish that the great Hammers could get the restorations they deserve because the dripping Eastmancolor of Curse is extremely muted on the bare bones DVD. I think that Horror of Dracula was restored by the BFI, so maybe a blu-ray is in store.

Phantom of the Opera-silent with live score. Color tinted print with the original Technicolor masked ball. Stunning.

Moonraker and For Your Eyes Only-childhood favorites. Reminded me of how much I hate the Lowry transfers, but hard to believe that FYEO is almost 30!

Control-brilliant B&W bio pic of the late singer of Joy Division.

I showed some friends movies for Halloween:

Don't Look Now and The Wicker Man.

They didn't go over well. I think today you have to have Nicholas Cage being attacked by bees for WM to be acceptable. I also think I was born in the wrong decade.

And no one today gets poor Nicolas Roeg. I don't understand how people can loathe DLN. It's so multilayered and unforgettable.

Superman The Movie Audio Problem
Time

Children can handle actual storytelling and drama. I did, and I didn't turn out that bad did I? (I would hope...) Kids are not stupid! I grew up on both TAS and the Fleischer Supermans. (BTW avoid that new "intended for collectors" WB set. It really isn't intended for collector's as the openings are screwed up and changes have been made throughout.) I also think that both of these series are essentially definitive versions of their respective characters.

And I have also realized that I haven't seen Superman all the way through either.

It's now added to my watchlist with the Donner cut of II.

When did Star Wars stop being fun? (aka, the Anti-Correct Viewing Order thread)
Time

Around AOTC for me too. I could ignore TPM for the most part, but things were getting ridiculous. The NJO was absolutely no fun and stupid. That killed off the EU books for me. The 2004 DVDs were atrocious. I had them pre-ordered for months and counted down the days. And was burned again. Then ROTS came along and was one of the most depressing cinema experiences of my life. And then came the GOUT which was the final middle finger to those who loved Star Wars. So from 2005-2008 I pretty much swore off SW.

The only way it became fun for me again was by joining this mad colony in the Jundland Wastes. Who says exile can't be fun?

Star Wars lives in our hearts and minds. Here you may find some physical representation that might bring it back for you.

Perfect Movie Shots
Time

Raiders-Indy drinking in the Cairo bar after Maron's "death". Also, the Frankenheimer-esque shot of Indy and Belloq's conversation in the bar.

Lawrence of Arabia: Ali coming out of nothingness, The shot where Lawrence stands on top of the wrecked train in his flowing robes and is blacked out by the sunlight.

The Third Man-every damn shot.

Blade Runner-tears in rain.

OHMSS-opening and ending.

The Redux is a travesty. The additional scenes are nice to see as a curio. The original is mystic, cryptic, unconventional, primeval, uncompromising, mysterious, unforgettable and the Redux is none of these.

I never really liked Godfather Part II as much as others. It is a good film, but just isn't anywhere near the magic of the first. Plus the whole in and out of time idea was done immeasurably better in Once Upon a Time in America. (which in my opinon blows GFII out of the water.)

When I finally rewatched Part III, it wasn't anywhere near as bad as I remembered. It is a good film, but certainly flawed. As a seperate film it would be beter. Same with The Two Jakes.

The Thin Blue Line.
