Info: 'Ben Hur' 35mm for sale on ebay... do these sales happen a lot?
Time

I just got the BD box and after researching it’s the audio that is in need of fixing. From the Last LD on a modernized 5.1 mix is used with centralized dialogue and doesn’t compare to the big bombastic Oscar winning 70mm mix. The original has directional dialogue panning and the remix has none. Some have said the original WS LD has the original audio in DPL so I’ll have to get it and give it a go.

Donner Cut Vs Lester Cut?
Time

Great thread. The answer is there is no easy answer. Because of the awful production problems, the fact that II was mostly done and then abandoned to finish I, the fact that Lester reshot many Donner scenes to get credit and obviously was unsuited to the material and thus nothing matches, and hat he Salkinds didn’t care about matching anything finally means that this is never going to be fully fixable.

The DC is preferable for reinstating many Donner scenes that should have never have been lost plus the original story intents. But it is hampered by insisting on Donner bits only because the Lester cut is technically what would have been issued in 1980 and was finished of the time. So any cut must be a compromise between the two despit et the fact that elite eventual Lester cut is much lesser than the intent of the Donner cut.

The effects in the DC are quite bad at times and the new sound mix while decent is nothing like the original TC audio. The BD reissue has it lossless ly encoded so a hybrid track is now possible. The TC 5.1 is sourced from the 70mm audio and sounds great.

The biggest draw of the DC is reinstating the missile freeing the villains and losing all of the lesser directed Lester moments in addition to adding back all the lost material. It makes the whole thing fit in with the original film much better and then we don’t have all the silly bits, scenes that fall flat, cheesy depowering sequence, scenes where the photography style doesn’t match Donner at all and of course THAT DAMN INCONCEIVABLY STUPID FLYING SHIELD TRAP EMBLEM! It goes without saying that the DC resolves one of the all time great plot blunders in history: just how does Superman regain his powers?

The TC has the benefit of the action sequences in Paris and the small town. The fact that the DC loses the latter entirely is plain stupid and it should be reinstated. The loss of the former hurts in that the DC thus loses an action beat and story sequence in the opening third.

The one positive of the TC IMO is the moving of the bed scene. In the DC we see the lovers in bed before Superman renounces his powers. Despite having an achingly beautiful shot of Lois observing Kal-el speaking to Jor-el of his devotion to her whilst only dressed in the torso of his costume, the TC fits the operatic and classic mythology structure of the script by moving their lovemaking to just after he depowers himself.

Scratch that make it two positives:
The DC loses perhaps the second most quotable line from the film. The “freedom of the press” line is a drastically poor substitute for “General, would you care to step outside?” That’s like changing “Kneel before Zod” to “Bow to your new leader.”

I’ve thought about trying to mesh the two cuts together into a more cohesive whole for years but the simple truth is there’s no easy way to do it with the materials present. And due to the DC not including the Salkinds hey nixed working with WB ever again or doing any version of the extended tv cuts.

But let’s discuss further. This is always a fascinating topic to me and I love getting to put myself against these kinds of problems.

Got some LDs recently that I plan to watch through.

Under Siege

A Steven Segal picture that doesn’t suck. A surprisingly good movie in spite of being a Die Hard ripoff in every single way. Not perfect but really held up by the direction and the villains being completely over the top.
2.5 balls out of 4.

The Fugitive
Great to revisit a time where the big blockbusters could take a hit older property and not only adapt it well but create a cohesive and complete storyline out of it. This is a movie about performance and story; where everything is tied into a whole and allows the audience to become actively involved while not being treated as if they are stupid. What a breath of fresh air it was to watch this again after all these years. I just wish the mystery aspect was played up a bit more.
3.5 balls out of 4.

Director Andrew Davis proved on these that he had a good knack for bringing materials into a cohesive action adventure narrative. Both have very good ProLogic mixes in the old school style and we’re both nominated for best sound at the Oscars.

Diamonds Are Forever - I love it!

Welcome to the club sir. 99% of people don’t understand us, but if at first you don’t succeed Mr. Kidd…

The Mankiewicz trilogy has never been fully appreciated and I don’t know if it ever will sadly.
For example, The internet decided long ago Moonraker was terrible (despite many bloggers never seeing it before hammering away at it) and Craig was a godsend (despite the films being rubbish and the character being fully bastardized) so what do they know?

In terms of the debate that rages here and other places: no. To change the character in such a dramatic fashion loses that character and their traits. Do another story that is your own and make your own decisions. Fleming created Bond for specific reasons and the films created their own version to suit cinema with varying degrees over time. But the character is the same. What they do now is off he deep end in terms of losing thre character so they might honestly give in to all this off base furor that has been raised.

And I get so tired of the psychoanalysis people do. 007 was created in the 50’s and has frequent sexual adventures yes. It was a combination of wish fulfillment and adventure writing yes. The idea goes all the way back to St. George and the dragon and winning the affections of the damsel in distress. But it does not make him a sexist or misogynist or a dinosaur despite what M said in Goldeneye which itself was too full of swipes at Bond to placate those in the 90’s who thought he couldn’t come back in the post Cold War landscape.

What people are actually criticizing is how the films frequently utilized cinematic shorthand or made Bond a ladykiller in ways reminiscent of classical adventure heroes onscreen. Fleming’s creation is far more human and his characterizations of women are truly grand. This is where I think the films failed: in that not making the female characters as strong as they were in the books it makes them seem more like appendages and rather useless and also serves to make Bond seem like what the analysts have claimed.

I don’t like Superman: The Movie either.

Pushing aside all my issues with Clark’s characterization, I still hate everything pertaining to Luthor, Otis, and that dumbass ending.

It’s baffling that it’s a 4 stars on RogerEbert.com. Man of Steel is leaps and bounds ahead of the first superman.

If you don’t like the first Donner Superman, that’s fine. But saying Man of Steel is better? 'Em is fighting words!

Man of steel is deeper, better acted, better characterization (surprisingly enough) all IMO

No, no, no, no.

The original may be dated in ways but it has heart and depth that has and will last through the ages. MOS is absolute s***. Just beyond comprehension of bad. As bad and actually worse than the brain dead Superman Returns.

Mankiewicz’s wit and sense are all over the original and why I love the film so damn much. (Not to mention his extended cameo in the Planet).
“Otisburg?” is IMO one of the great lines btw.

The "Is it in HD somewhere because I can't find it" thread.
Time

MOTP has long been rumored and requested in a SE with features. Nothing has ever been done. DCAU titles only hit BD if an HD master exists or one can be easily made. I was shocked we’ve even gotten any.

BTAS should be first but it takes time as Timm & Co. refuse transfers that tamper with the original animation. Yay!
MOTP is still stuck with the noisy outdated LD transfer. The 1.85 crop was hastily added for the rushed theatrical release and the 1.33 is open but there should be a compromise 1.66 made for BD likely. The color needs correction but is warmer that TAS because of the Technicolor printing. Sound on the LD is perfect.

Revisiting S:TAS shows how badly these things need new transfers. Yikes.

Info Wanted: Psycho - HDTV broadcast vs 50th anniversary Blu-ray (comparison)
Time

Hmmm…

Psycho is definitely not what it should be at, like all other Uni held Hitchcock titles. It fares better due to a newer scan but has obviousbly been DNRd at some point. The UK blu has a higher bitrate and lossless original mono so that’s what I went for.

It should have more grain but the BD seems like a stronger presentation due to the lack of TV compression etc. I think the best thing would be to start from scratch with a 4K scan on all the Hitch titles and dump that HORRIBLE multichannel remix.

And it needs to be shown open matte as an alternate. Once seen this way you get what he was going for even more I think and like TOUCH OF EVIL, PSYCHO plays well in both 1.33 and 1.85 so it is unknown which was the intended framing.

What is wrong with... <strong>Attack of the Clones</strong>? - a general discussion thread
Time

The best scene in the whole damn thing is the tiny moment where Dooku confronts Obi-Wan about the corruption in the Senate, Qui-Gon and attempts to manipulate a Jedi’s conviction. Every time I see this I revel in its power and want to scream out: “YES JOIN HIM SO WE CAN HAVE AN ACTUAL INVOLVING STORY AND PIT OBI-WAN AND HIS NOW WAVERING BELIEFS AGAINST HIS MASTER’S MASTER!!!”

And it never happens. Sigh.

Best. damn. thing. in. entire. PT. (Besides the few well paced moments in the TPM theatrical cut.)

Worst villain: The Emperor
Time

When closely examined his plans seem a bit silly. I think this extends form the fact that Palpy was originally conceived as a politician and not Supreme Sith Lord etc.

Love the performance and the confrontation but agree that it lacks that epic feel necessary for the final battle scenario and that overall he seems more ineffective than he should be.

Tarkin remains the best villain for me. Cold, remorseless, calculating and the most dangerous in the OT.

Ranking the Batman films
Time

I’m beyond tired of Forever getting trashed by everyone. There’s a hell of a lot of good stuff in there if you look past the 90’sisms and cheesier bits. And if the studio hadn’t mucked about in the editing room it would be held in much better esteem.

And after enduring B&R yet again…I think the consistent Schumacher bashing has got to stop. It’s the studio’s fault ultimately every time and the whole film was cursed from the get go. It was the guy’s job to do their bidding, even though he wanted to do a dark Batman film. They rushed it, they only cared about marketing, merchandising and building the franchise. To compound this the original super producers were long gone and Schumacher was left to try and just get the damn thing done on time and make it kid and toy friendly on every level. Sure it’s heinously bad but considering how the production went it starts to make sense.

Maybe it’s also finally listening to his commentary. He comes across as a truly nice guy and makes more references to the comics than Burton did.

It’s not just one guy’s fault…nine times out of ten there’s a hell of a lot of production troubles going on.

Anybody else ever think similarly? Or is it just me and doing way too much research into the Bat production histories?

Info: Jaws - PCM mono track
Time

Dang…thats just silly. For such a big restoration they just reused he old video remix that was atrocious…and made it slightly more palatable…grrr.
The clip shown in the docu shows their protools session already in progress so I guess they just polished up what was there already. Shame as the film has arguably along with SW the finest mono track ever mixed and it should be preserved in the vaults like the film, but then again we’re not sure if hey got the color right in every shot anyways.

Info &amp; Discussion: Fullscreen Laserdisc / DVD Preservations
Time

Huh. I know Ronin was opened a bit on the full frame DVD side but I’ve never had it to check myself…hmmm…guess I’ll have to at some point since I’m obsessed with it and Frankenheimer. Also of note is that it had a CCE print run just like Seven.

Great Escape is super open to the full camera exposure on the MGM WS LD and the early DVD port. Director Sturges realized it was super wide and disliked how it detracted from the action so he had it cropped to 2.35 for release.

My big question is the four Batmans. I know we’ve proven the full frame transfers are open matte but I’ve only had my VHS to check against DVD LD and BD. Are the old flippers worth going after for the full frame sides? I have the 4ff repackage with the matted widescreen sides only but hey are really noisy discs and inferior to the LD counterparts in almost every way…but I kinda would like the full frame version for completeness sake if they’re worth it.

Info: Jaws - PCM mono track
Time

Thanks for the hard work Chris. I’ll have to watch the video when at home. So far as I’ve ever been able to tell the few minute differences come from the fact that the home video version on the 1991 WS LD would have had to have been remixed at some point to include the rescoring. It was a common practice at the time but thankfully not like Warners awful stereoizing of mono tracks. When done though it will change the levels of some of the dme stems or be adjusted by someone not from the original production. Thus I think the extra clarity is not really correct and that the restored 1995 audio and DVD port are correct.
And it’s nice to know that the BD is off too-that takes a lot of detecting work but it doesn’t surprise me that they couldn’t even get that right.
BTW the new 7.1 is a completely new mix from scratch where the new effects are less obtrusive but still unnecessary. He big example of it being new is how they were able to properly spread the score across the channels as opposed to the 5.1 and I also think they had access to the master materials too.

Now that I have the signature CAV set I need to compare all of them.

The big issue with Thunderball stems back to the fact that it was supposed to be the first film made and multiple scripts were written. The original story was created as a film treatment then abandoned. With all this previous work combined with a novel that is rather meandering at times it was perhaps not the film to make after thre massive success of Goldfinger. Here the producers literally were throwing in the kitchen sink and director Terrence Young could only do his best to get the thing finished as they set a hard and rather silly Xmas release date.
Peter Hunt had to somehow cut the 4 hour slow mess into what we have. So it could have been much much worse but here are plenty of Young flourishes to make T worthwhile.

Info: 'Forbidden Planet' - 16mm Scope print for sale on eBay
Time

I believe it’s how it usually happened: Criterion uses show print or studio print as-is then later MGM would either reissue that or scan it on their better equipment for a better presentation or go back and use a higher generation source eventually.
From what I’ve heard on FP, Criterion uses a print and is contrasty whereas MGM used a IP and later reissued in full CAV and ported to DVD.
