So then, PAL or NTSC GOUT for best quality?

LOL! boris, you are truly an unicum here! The first time I heard that NTSC has actually MORE visible scanlines than PAL....
What I mean is the BLACK scanlines, between the lines of picture, will be thicker - and more visible. This is what bothers some people. I thought I what I said was clear the first time?

It made sense to me. He was not saying that NTSC had beteer resolution. He was saying it looked worse, because of the lower resolution you can see blank lines between the real lines. I can see those black lines especially when watching laserdiscs. DVD's aren't so bad. Anamorphic DVD's I don't see them at all, because this Sony Wega has a hardware feature to squeeze an anamorphic picture vertically.

Honestly, why all the Boris bashing? It's almost like you guys are taking your anti-Lucas frustrations out on him. You were definitely not trying to understand his post... you just wanted to flame.

Idea: Personalized preservation possible with September 2006 OT DVD's
Time
Perhaps I should wait until I get the OUT discs before I say this, but this project seems to be obsolete (so far the leaked images look great). Since I started the project I have come to realize how screwed up the 2004 discs actually are. So, I don't think that my project will really buy a whole lot.. except maybe a nice tool to cut and join clips.. pretty sure these types of tools already exist. I certainly no longer have any interest in combining the 2004 and 2006 discs.

The partial frame re-encoding would still be cool (to handle those burnt in subtitles), but for those with widescreen TV's, it sounds like they will want to re-encode anamorphic anyways. I was having a lot of fun with it, but I got busy with school, and now at this point I see little to be gained. Project cancelled. Sorry about that! I'm willing to share what I have if someone else wants to keep going with this... I don't plan on going anywhere, this is a fun community.

2006 OT DVD: Poll: So What are You Going to Do?

Yes, own the OOT...for the last time...Or, until the 30th Anniversary set comes out or the next inevitable release that incorporates "rare deleted scenes from the Lucasfilm vaults". Yeah, I know numerous people have stated it already, but it's a quick cash grab.

If they come out with a boxed set next year of all 6 movies, you can be sure that it will *NOT* include the OUT, but rather the SE's. They will probably have bonus features discs, but they aren't going to include additional extra discs that they don't have to. IMO, this is really the last opportunity to buy the OUT on DVD. If they ever do it again, it'll probably be HD-DVD or such.

And, even if I'm wrong, and they do include the OUT in 2007, it'll still be the same discs you'd be getting Sept 12. So what's the advantage to waiting? I already own the PT, so that isn't an incentive for me.

Just an idea I've been having.

There are several generous people hosting covers. For example, check out the upload section, here:
http://kevin.alfahosting.org/

They have a 3mb limit. If you'd like to host some larger covers, please let me know, I have plenty of room. And I'm sure there are more. But, sure, if you have the bandwidth and willingness, please do put up another site, it would spread the load a little

Edit: Just to clarify, the above referenced link is not my website, mine is http://kidsquid.com/

Falle, if you'd like me to host that press section, please let me know.

don't ask me why it's so freaking dark on the 2004 DVD, but you'll want to enhance the brightness, and resizing to 960x576 would correct the aspect ratio.

Wow, that was fast. Thank you very much! You're right, that picture is insanely dark, I guess they decided to change it from a day scene to a night scene, I see stars in the upper right corner.

I'm in need of a sandcrawler picture to complete the back of the ANH cover. Looking at the 1995 THX ANH laserdisc, it seems that the best image is at 15 min 37 sec: C-3PO says "R2-D2 it is you, it is you!", then the scene changes, showing the sandcrawler. They show a few seconds of the sandcrawler moving against a rock wall, but as it moves, blue sky creeps in, so the earlier pictures are probably the best.

I figured this would be in Star Wars: A musical Journey, chapter 7, but it wasn't. So, I'm hoping they didn't replace the scene.

Would someone with the 2004 DVD be willing to capture this frame for me, if it exists? A raw 720x480 capture would be perfect!

Thanks a lot!

Okay, I'll see what it looks like with a small picture on the back.

The Logos on the front are a little choppy. Other than that, they are pretty good.

Which logos do you mean? I'm guessing you mean the title logos (they have the lowest resolution of any of them). If they are bad, I can scan my laserdisc covers and probably get a pretty good looking image. That is what I did for the Star Wars logo on the spine. I am not entirely sure what you mean by choppy though.. do you mean having rough edges?

Thanks a lot for your feedback.

I have prepared a version of the Lord Phillock style covers:
http://kidsquid.com/files/starwars/covers/covers-calamari-LP.jpg

http://kidsquid.com/files/starwars/covers/A%20New%20Hope-calamari-LP-60dpi.jpg
A New Hope: 300 dpi

http://kidsquid.com/files/starwars/covers/The%20Empire%20Strikes%20Back-calamari-LP-60dpi.jpg
The Empire Strikes Back: 300 dpi

http://kidsquid.com/files/starwars/covers/Return%20of%20the%20Jedi-calamari-LP-60dpi.jpg
Return of the Jedi: 300 dpi

I'm curious what you all think of them. I am considering placing one small image on the back of each (Death Star trench, AT-AT's, Endor (bunker?)). Also, I am not sure whether I like the silver background on the front cover (Lord Phillock's is inversed). Opinions?

Hi! Glad to hear from you. I look forward to seeing the high resolution versions. In the meantime, I'll continue messing around with that design

Everyone: I've posted a logo rotoscoping tutorial on the wiki.

Sounds cool....could you point me to a link to the tut? Thanks in advance.

http://kidsquid.com/dokuwiki/doku.php?id=rotoscoping

I hope I am using the correct term when I say rotoscoping. If not, someone please correct me (and tell me what the correct term is)! Here is a non-computer example of what I've called "rotoscoping": Imagine a Star Wars cover with a gold Star Wars logo on it and a black background. Take a pair of scissors, and cut out the logo so that there is no black background remaining. Now the logo can be glued onto a white surface (or any color). If we just cut out a rectangle with the logo in it then we could only place it onto a black surface, otherwise the rectangle would stand out.

My tutorial shows how to do the same with graphical images, so that the background is changed to a transparent color and the edges are partially transparent. Then, the logo has been freed from its original graphics and can now be placed onto any cover. This is better than just using the magic wand, because the wand doesn't give soft edges.

Well said! It was Falle's excellent design work that inspired me to finally try to recreate the Lord Phillock covers I wanted. I have learned a lot and am having a blast. I hope you get your stuff back.

Falle: I have 6 of your covers (the summer set, I think it was called (with the stars in the background), and also the set with the grey/white backs), in case you end up needing them. I also have a request: I've rotoscoped the IV, V, and VI logos, and the ANH, ESB, and ROTJ spine lettering. I think these logos would be useful to future designers. Can I offer them for download on my logo page? I can list them with "Falle" as the author, or however you'd like.

Everyone: I've posted a logo rotoscoping tutorial on the wiki. Hopefully more tutorials will come as I overcome graphics obstacles. I also need to upload another batch of logos.

As far as the Lord Phillock (page 118) covers are concerned, I've completed ESB and ROTJ, so just ANH to go. They are slightly different than his covers (to match the ep 1/2/3 covers better), but they will have all source images available so feel free to modify them.

Thanks Boris! I actually found that thread this afternoon, but somehow I skipped over that link. So, thanks for bringing it back to my attention.

I haven't downloaded all those huge things yet, but I'm very hopeful it has the scan I need. I did notice one oddity.. there appear to be two different versions of Lando in that poster, and different computer consoles next to him...
