Neverar's A New Hope Technicolor Recreation <strong>(Final Version Released!)</strong>
Time

This is really stupendous! I don’t understand how a professional team managed to color grade the films as they did on the Blurays. They must have had some serious calibration issues on their monitors.

I look forward to seeing the finished product but more importantly when can you color grade the Silver Screen Edition? 😉

35 years ago the color were different on the two prints probably but not necessarily better than the other. It’s just today the Eastman prints have faded where as the Technicolor prints have not. Technicolor had it’s own issues and especially Star Wars prints since they were at the end of the Technicolor processing line.

I think Mike Verta is using grain reduction in that video. He showed in some video that he was combining prints together to achieve this. For instance if you have a static shot of something that is really grainy and combine multiple frames over time together aka blending you will take the grain out of the shot completely. This effect essentially negates the grain.

I like the Blade Runner comparison Harmy made. I like that Bluray set. I’ve seen so many versions of that film over the years that no one version is the correct one in my mind. (I don’t like to think of Harrison Ford as a replicant though.) So I like watching the official Blurays and then Harmy’s and now this. I think a “perfect version” will be something middle of the road. Harmy had a nice example above. I think reducing the grain and punching up the image a touch will be nice.

Disney should just take all the different versions online and sell a Bluray set with Fox and get everyone to chip in for extras.

I’m looking forward to 70mm Rogue One!

Star Wars fans are a tough crowd. You all watched it on VHS for years and loved it.

I think a lot of people are used to clean digital images and it’s like they are offended by grain these days. I love what Harmy has done but I feel the Despecialized editions are way over processed. It’s a function of coming form the Blurays and uprezzed, being compressed and then re-color graded and being compressed again.

Watching this feels very natural. It needs some work for sure but this is my go to version for now. I think Mike Verta is going to blow everyone out of the water with his version though but that will be a tough one to get.

A few more thoughts: I’ve noticed how this film mirrors the original - almost too much, in fact. I don’t know if this was what George’s idea was when he presented his rhyme and stanzas theory. Even the prequels were just a bit more subtle than that!

Waayyy too much. I felt it was weak story telling. A very beautiful look to the film though. It nailed the atmosphere.

Oscar Isaac should have just told BB-8 to save himself so it takes off into the desert. Rey should have been having dreams about Jedi’s early in the film and know about them too. There should have been statues of Luke in places. The legend of Luke Skywalker defeating the Empire is told by everyone. Han likes to remind people he was pretty important too. The Empire should have been crushed and people have not heard from them in years (Like the Cylons) and the First Order is bringing back order to the Galaxy. Kylo Ren is at the helm. The Emperor visits him as a ghost in his dreams. The film should have turned into a detective story with Oscar Isaac, Finn, Rey, Han and Chewie all trying find Luke. R2 should have been with Luke. NOOOO Death Star type function. It all ends at a Jedi temple and Luke isn’t there. Kyle fights Finn and Rey and stabs Han. Luke shows up to save the day but doesn’t kill Kylo because one, he’s his nephew and two, Hans asks Luke to save his son and bring him back from the dark side. End movie.

Just saw the film. I loved it up until half way through the movie. I did not need a new Death Star. I thought that was weak. The movie should have been “The Search for Luke”. I really loved the opening scroll and Fin and Rey. I loved the look and the feel though. I have bigger hopes for films without J.J. Should have been more Luke.

JJ gets my hopes up a lot so I can't be too happy yet.  But so far that trailer looked great.  It was more of a teaser and that's what it should be.  It shouldn't give away too much info.  It just needs to make me want to see it.  Job done!  Do not make one more trailer.  Unless it's a teaser with Luke in it.  I want the lady in the movie to be Han and Leigha's daughter.  Then Luke shows up and starts being all Obi Wan in the next three movies.  Don't kill Han till next movie though.
