Episode VIII : The Last Jedi - Discussion * SPOILER THREAD *

I’m baffled by the visceral reactions, since I’m an old school Star Wars fan, and should be deeply offended

Yeah it’s exhausting and weird and getting worse every year. We’re going to have a new movie every year for the rest of time and I think I’m going to have to go live in a unabomber shack. (also, the screams in the void art is really cool)

Our open letter to Disney and Lucasfilm
Time

Thanks for putting it out there. Hard to believe we have a an official 40th anniversary without the actual thing that’s turning 40. (they even have an article on the official site today with Dennis Muren that goes on about the importance/legacy of the effects and the Dykstraflex and the motion control work, and how many of those shots aren’t in the movie anymore?)

4K restoration on Star Wars

Some kind of multi-version package is our best bet because it kills many birds with one stone. There is a ton of precedent that we can point to and say “hey these movies can have it and they aren’t as popular, why not SW?” (Blade Runner, Close Encounters, Exorcist etc.), it doesn’t fly in the face of the filmmakers’ wish by excluding their preferred versions, and it allows them to charge more which they love.
I think using BLADE RUNNER in particular as our gold standard is wise because the theatrical version in that set was easily achieved (and would be even easier for Star Wars now, scanning and cleaning scratches and dirt is cheaper and easier than it was in 2007). And everybody in home video knows Blade Runner, knows it has a cult following, but is less of a big deal than Star Wars. It’s a great shorthand to just say “hey do Blade Runner thing.”

The convention panel really seems like a weird place to have a big announcement about the OT since it’s all about how everything is awesome, always has been, and restoring the OT is like admitting a mistake. (I’m still holding out hope for it to show up in some way, in some overpriced box set of “rarities” or whatever. Maybe they’d announce that during one of the merchandising panels)

2012? So Lucasfilm had a 4K version less than a year after charging 90 bucks for a box with the heavily flawed one from 2004? Well, that sounds douchey enough to be true.

But I wouldn’t worry too much about Hidalgo’s tweets, he would not be in the loop about this, particularly the Fox side of it. (I feel kind of bad for him, his twitter seems like a nightmare)

If the SE is a dupe neg and the original is untouched, it has 18-20 more years of degrading that they would have to fix. Or the pieces cut out of the neg to create the SE (even now that sickens me) would probably have needed a lot of work. Empire probably has the same fading issues, and hopefully Jedi was relatively easy.

Edited my reply, maybe a spoiler for Rogue One>

Now that this old news is resurfacing once more, I find myself reading the same thing: “the negatives for the originals are gone! no chance for the theatrical cuts!”

As we head into another endless round of that nonsense, it’s worth pointing out that Robert Harris has once again (just in the last few days on Home Theater Forum) reiterated that this is not an issue.

Superman I-III extended TV cuts & Info - Where have the Preservations gone? (Released)
Time

I just watched it, as far as I can tell, it’s the Donner cut with some extra scenes dropped in and a partly (?) new-ish sound mix. I noticed:

-A short extension of the Lex/Jor-el fortress scene with some stuff I’ve never seen.
-the full East Houston “you only smell strong etc.” from the theatrical Lester version, (but when Zod levitates the guy with the rifle, the beam effect isn’t there.)
-the kid on the horse getting killed by Non from the TV version (the kid has a different voice, no longer has that accent)
-the cooking-souffle’-with-heat vision scene from the TV version

Weird!
