It just doesn't match with the rest of the series! All of them end with a shot of the characters.

Well, actually it does end with a shot of the characters...except it's not a happy ending like the others are. This time they've been beaten and bloodied and have had to retreat, but the end shot shows they're still standing strong. The fact that one of them is missing reinforces that they have suffered a loss.

Yet ANOTHER DVD boxed set...*sigh*
Time

Star Wars will never appear on Blu-Ray until GL has finished tinkering with the saga enough to allow them onto it. He's working on the IMAX'd versions of Star Wars, probably still has loads of 'ideas' to go back and destroy the original trilogy even more.

Steve Sansweet did make a comment at the Europe Celebration that Blu-Ray wasn't on the radar of Lucas yet and wouldn't be until it was firmly established as the media of choice. Until DVD dies, it won't happen anytime soon.

I wish the Star Wars movies didn't have episode numbers
Time

It wasn't meant to be one big long movie, but there was the intention to create one long story in the form of The Journal of the Whills. Whatever his reasoning, GL decided to start in the middle rather than the beginning because he hadn't actually thought of the beginning and didn't have an ending written up beyond some sketchy ideas.

As for the episode numbers, it would probably have worked out well without them, but we're stuck with them now due to all the backtracking made over the years over how many parts there were supposed to be...

So Apparently Del Rey is putting out another shitty 9 novel series following Legacy of the Force. (Spoilers inside)

Actually, if I'm not mistaken, the Legacy series takes place 100 years after ROTJ.  From JediNet.com:

The future of Star Wars is here in an all-new series set more than a century after Return of the Jedi and the New Jedi Order!

The Jedi Temple is attacked, an Emperor is betrayed, and the Sith are born anew! A lot can happen in a hundred years, but all of the above happens just in this first issue! Not since Luke Skywalker first stepped aboard the Millennium Falcon has the galaxy seemed like such a vast, exciting, dangerous place!

See, they had to take the series that far out in order for people to accept that they wouldn't see Luke, Han, or Leia.

Isn't that pretty much the same plot of the prequels?  And we know how well that turned out.

It's not just the plot of the prequels but pretty much the plot of the entire Star Wars saga...!

Everything done in the EU still, apparently, has to go past GL before it's approved. He approved the death of Chewbacca (but has since allegedly denied he had anything to do with it) and allowed Luke to get married, not just in the EU novels but also in the Dark Horse comic series (and subsequently denied he allowed it!)

As I said in an earlier post, the minor characters should be brought to the front. The Star Wars universe is not just Luke/Han/Leia. They can be left in the background still doing stuff as was the case in The Rogue Squadron novels. I know it's like a broken record, me going on about The Rogue Squadron novels, but to me these were the last of the really good Star Wars EU novels. It fleshed out the character of Wedge and gave him a chance to be the (reluctant) hero we all know he can be. It showed there could be a Star Wars story without having our established main characters in the limelight.

What have we had in recent years? Rehashed movie plots, a terrible rehash of the actual backstory to Star Wars, a story about the crew who built the Death Star and an attempt at a multimedia story with a soundtrack written to go with the story!!

It's a shame. The Star Wars universe has the ability to be so much more than Jedi, Sith, Luke/Han/Leia, but due to one man's extremely narrow vision, we are left with reheated retreads of the same stories...

Even keeping the peace gets boring if you don't have some conflict to make it worth keeping. I felt that the triumvite of Luke-Han-Leia had kinda run its course. A lot of the stories seemed to rehash the original story in some way but transplanted it to another planet. There are only so many Luke-Han-Leia vs The Empire/Imperial Remnant stories you can have before it gets tired.

That's why I enjoyed the Rogue Squadron stories more. Granted, they were derived from other sources - The Dirty Dozen, The A-Team even! but they were good fun and consigned the major characters to the sidelines in favour of promoting Wedge Antilles to the limelight.

As for the rumour that GL hates what has happened to the EU...well he only has himself to blame. He agreed to the killing of a major character which put the Han Depression element into things, but has recently been quoted as saying he hated seeing that happen. He also apparently hated the fact Luke got married...Well if he did, why agree...surely he does have some creative input into the situations these characters get into!!

I'd much prefer that they did more stuff on The Rogue Squadron series. In my opinion, those books captured the spirit of Star Wars far more than a lot of the series did. Tim Zahn's Thrawn Trilogy was brilliant and would have made an excellent VII-IX trilogy, but GL probably felt it was going to reflect badly on his own stuff if he allowed someone else to write the fabled last trilogy.

I'll probably still read it anyway, sucker that I am for Star Wars novels...!

What question does Darth Vader ask in his first line in Star Wars? 3 POINTS

Where are those plans? What have you done with the transmission you intercepted?

Errr  Gaffer got the easiest question ever...and for 6 points!!!!

:)

Yes, I'm competitive and a sore loser!!  Ha

Just to finish off the little 'exchange'...

This is a counselor ship...we're on a diplomatic mission...

If this is a counselor ship, then where is the ambassador??

neck breaks, Vader throws the dude (who stops himself from smacking hard into the wall)

Commander, tear this ship apart until you find those plans and bring me the passengers - I want them alive!

Hi, I created this account just to ask you something. I just saw your edition of the first Star Wars and seeing that you are redoing the second one, I really have to ask if something would be possible for you to modify.

It is something that has always bugged me about the movie since I saw it in 1980 in theaters and every time I saw it on videos after. Maybe you have addressed it already, I didn't know how I could find it in the 108 pages here.

When the rebels escape from the snow planet at the beginning, you have that huge canon fire a gigantic laser bolt at the imperial ship coming in on them (you have it pictured a few posts back). You expect something awesome to happen but all you see is a bunch of electric-like bolts surrounding the ship's model and it drifts away. I mean, I understand that back then they needed to keep that huge model intact for many more shots and that was an economical way of doing things but it just looks awful and cheap. It's something that Richard Edlund did on many gigs.

Thanks

That was an ion cannon which was designed to disrupt the electrical power of a ship...what did you want to have happen - the SD being destroyed? If they did that, then the Rebel Transport and the two X-wings would have had to fly through a debris field which would have extended the time for them to escape (as they couldn't go to hyperspace straight away.) Back then, I thought it was awesome enough that a couple of laser bolts could do that much damage without physically damaging the ship that was hit. I still think it's an awesome thing to be able to do and shows the Rebels didn't want to cause any extra death or destruction than was needed - even when running away!

Maybe Ady could enhance the nature of the electrical disruption, but I don't think it's really needed.

Edit: sorry...didn't see the replies after your query...!

Here's a potentially controversial suggestion which has always bothered me a little, I was reminded of it when I read someone on another site making the same observation.

If we look at the opening crawl there is one obvious error:

It is a dark time for the Rebellion. Although the Death Star has been destroyed, Imperial troops have driven the Rebel forces from their hidden base and pursued them across the galaxy.

Evading the dreaded Imperial Starfleet, a group of freedom fighters led by Luke Skywalker has established a new secret base on the remote ice world of Hoth.

The evil lord Darth Vader obsessed with finding young Skywalker, has dispatched thousands of remote probes into the far reaches of space....

Luke was not the leader of the rebels so to say he led the group who established the base is vastly inaccurate, this bothers me every time I watch Empire but I'm not really sure if I'd want it changed or if there is a good way to change it.

as I see it there are a couple of options

you could change it to read "led by Princess Leia" which would be more accurate but would necesitate changing the third paragraph to "obsessed with finding Luke Skywalker", but as a whole I don't think that reads as well, changing it to "obsessed with finding the rebel base" reads better but doesn't give us the right information.

the other option would be to change it so it doesn't say "led by" so maybe it could be "a group of freedom fighters including Luke Skywalker" or something to that effect maybe "joined by" or "accompanied by"

as I said the main reason I don't really think it should be changed is because I can't think of a better way to phrase it, but maybe someone else can.

To be fair, I don't see a lot wrong with Luke being named as A leader of a GROUP of freedom fighters. It doesn't mention that he is THE leader of the Rebels, just that he is leading a group of them that established the base on Hoth. It is possible to have an advance party establish a base before the main group turns up and is frequently the case - after all, far better to send out a scout party and ensure it is safe before sending in the commanding officer, no? Where's the CO gonna pitch their tent if the shield hasn't been built?

It does show Luke as a person who has made major steps in his life from simple farmboy to a leader of people then onward toward being the last Jedi, so it is a logical expansion of his character too...in my opinion anyway.
