Too bad the extended tv cut of Superman only exists as a 16mm pan and scan flat print.

I once saw the abc cut up on ebay it went for hundreds of dollars and the print was fairly faded.

I did not bid on the print since it was pan and scan and i would have had no way to get it transfered since it is a copywritten motion picture film.

The guy who bought it if he has a projector must be pretty pleased with his find.

Still even a faded 16mm dupe tv station print is better than a vhs tape recording of 1980s vintage.

That was probably Chance Bartels. He has a print which he transfered to DVD. This was to be one of my sources until Jim Bowers donated his- Which is exactly the same.

I myself am still looking for a recording of the supergirl broadcast with those scenes found in no other version of the film.

Years ago i bought my Sister the limited anchor bay 2 disc release.  Which had the international version and directors cut.  Though i would have liked to have given her the tv cut and the theatrical us version as well they are not on dvd.

The first tv airing (on ABC) of Supergirl was a 97 min trimmed version of the 138 min Director's Cut released on the double DVD set from Anchor Bay. It is out of print and starting to go way up in price. Every other tv airing since then has been the International 124 min Version.

The only version of SG not available on DVD is the 106 min US theatrical release which contains a side shot of SG flying as she's about to fly out of the Phantom Zone into Selena's fortress not seen in any other cut.

I don't know why they refused to restore the theatrical sound mix as it was released in six track mag and would have been awesome on dvd.  Even the stereo dolby mix could have benefitted from going back to the master tapes.  It is really a shame the best sound presentation for Superman the Movie was in 1978.  The best it ever sounded on home video was on the Uncompressed PCM theatrical track on Japan Laserdisc.  Which is nearly impossible to find now.

Unless of course you could get your hands on theatrical 35mm film prints and get someone to transfer the audio, lol.  If i remember correctly Donner said the original mix elements were in too poor shape to be reused on the newly created mix.  He obviously meant the original seperate discrete elements and not the master tape derived from them.  Yeah that would have meant a generation loss but better than not having the audio mix people loved in 1978.

Even the super8mm digest version need to be preserved on dvd.  I wonder what scenes are featured in the cutdowns?

I wish i was rich and could somehow Get a hold of a three strip dye technicolor print of Superman with the Six track mag, that and star wars, lol.

The original theatrical sound is available in the 4 film favorites set (see link above) as well as the Ultimate Collection box set and the 4 disc STM set. It is available only in the theatrical cut and not on the expanded 152 min Thau version.

The image of Superman was created by Jim Bowers of CapedWonder, but it was used in the lenticular case for The Ultimate Collection box set- which he was involved w/ in creating the art design so I think it's pretty much open game.

Hey, this place is swell. I had never been here before... I think. I found it because I was looking at my website stats and noticed links coming from here. I can't wait to see some of the SW edits.

The famous and GREAT editor Alex S. from the Supermancinema boards says he is gonna start his restoration of SUPERMAN - THE MOVIE finally. This BIG NEWS comes years after he originally began talking about it.  The word is was that he had heard someone else was doing it and wanted in on the action. He has better transfers (1st gens copies of all the film, Beta transfers, original ABC transfers, etc... etc...etc... ) they are better than any of mine. I couldn't possibly top the great ALEX S. in anything releated to Superman. The guy simply is the number one Superman fan ever and that is no lie. He said to even have an original copy of the master from the Tv cut to use on his restoration. So this will be a true restoration.

However, we are still gonna create ours. We are in this for the fun of it! I am happy that he is finally gonna do it I was tired of waiting.  The wating was the main reason why we started ours.  Good for him!

As far as our edit goes, we are working on it as I type. I am so looking forward to finally having a clean cut of the film. Keep in mind that our edit will be majorily inferior to the great Alex s.

Hope everyone stays interested in our edit. If you are interested, however, in a real restoration head on over to supermancinema and check out Alex S.

Thanks guys.

We will try not to let you down on our edit and will do our best. ;-)  We hope to have an edit that will be a good version while we wait patiently for the greatest restoration of our time. ALEX Ss'

***Takes a bow***

;-)

This is the first I've heard of this project, Mitch. I was actually going to start it in '07, but I found out almost a year ahead of time that the complete soundtracks to the films were to be released, so I waited to have a definitive source for the music.

WB recently released a 4 in 1 dvd set of the SM films (http://video.barnesandnoble.com/search/product.asp?r=1&EAN=883929035410&ourl=DVD%2FSuperman%2D4%2DFilm%2DFavorites) which contain the theatrical version along w/ the original sound. It's cheaper than getting the mega sets of STM. Maybe you can use that as your sound source.

Anyways... ummm... yeah.... Keep ut to good work and I'd love to see your edit once finished.
