The Matrix 35mm (Released)
Time

By the way, here's something I found when searching for info on the screener. Taken from this page.

When Neo is running from the agents near the end, he jumps off a fire escape and lands on a pile of garbage. When we see him (stunt double) land, we can see that there is a cushion with the garbage placed on top. Note: This is only seen in the open matte version, and not in the widescreen version where the cushion would have been out of frame.

And here's a screen from my VCD:

Does anybody know more of these things that one could find in this version?

Info Wanted: 'LOTR - FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING': Green tint removed?
Time

Yeah I had actually already checked caps-a-holic because I thought I remembered seeing comparisons there but it seems they had put them in something they call "the vault".

Now that I've checked them I agree with Matt, there's nothing wrong with them. Maybe there are some green tints here and there that people don't like but they look exactly the same as they did on DVD. And compared to the theatrical cut, it seems TTT has just a slightly different color timing in some scenes, like Treebeard's leaves being greener in the extended cut.

Anyway, I do find it horrible that Peter Jackson, who I respected greatly after seeing all the documentaries on the bonus discs in the extended cut DVD boxes, went the George Lucas-way and did something like that to FOTR. It's true that FOTR wasn't fully color timed like the other two when it was released, but the other two were professionally done. Skies were blue and not cyan, mountains were grey and not blue etc. If they wanted to re-do the color timing for FOTR they could have done it a lot better, even I could have done it better myself. I truly hope we'll get a better release someday, maybe along with the release of all three The Hobbit films, or maybe as a 4K resolution release.

Yeah, it sure is a tough one to do with only one setting.

I remember there's one scene where the Fellowship walks up in front of the camera and there was some weird very strong blue shadow on a shield or something. And in the introduction of the Shire, there's some shot of a pig, where the pig is green even after the tint being removed if I remember correct. The movie is full of weird things they've caused by their new and very strange color timing.

@kk650: I'm sorry. What I said might've looked like I'm trying to bash you but it was simply what DJ said: Informing.

I looked at your screenshot of the snow scene from Fellowship and saw that you had balanced out the green but hadn't done the rest that I tried to do, so I simply thought I'd inform people that was the case, so they knew what they had to choose from. And I swear it was no harm intended, same with Terminator.

I think it's very difficult to express emotions with text on a forum, but a good thing to keep in mind is that nothing I ever type here is meant to harm or offend anybody.

You're obviously talented and respect films the way they were originally intended and I understand you're doing your best to fix what's bugging people about some releases. I actually got interested in checking out your versions of The Hobbit and The Matrix sometime.

EDIT: I removed the word "don't" from my previous post since that did actually seem a bit inappropriate. Everybody's free to check out your releases if they want to.

Look for kk650's version on tehparadox.

No offense against that guy but he only removed the slight green tint, he didn't fix the rest of the color errors like the dark teal everywhere.

And actually I think I could improve on that fix I posted as a blog back then. I didn't have colourlike for avisynth when I made it. That plugin would allow even more control.

I won't do this now though but maybe sometime in the future.

Also if you're a member of Tehparadox, kingkong650 is also doing a regrading project on the latest remastering of The Terminator: tehparadox.com

Thanks for the link!! That project looks very titillating.

I checked it out and in that project, there's only been a curve added to balance the colors, but the teal (which is then turned into strong blue) isn't toned down and balanced like in our version.

Not saying this to compete with anyone, just saying it so you guys know that our version will still be worth getting.

The Matrix 35mm (Released)
Time

It's funny because the other day, me and AntcuFaalb had a chat about The Matrix, yet this thing came to my mind just yesterday: I actually have a couple 1999 VCD versions of the film. Or at least one of them is from 1999. I'm going to check them right now and hope they work, and see if they can be useful as some kind of color reference.

EDIT:

Yep, only one of them was from 1999. The other was simply a divx encode of the DVD and not a real VCD.

The VCD on the other hand is dated 1999-05-14, and is sourced from a VHS which I know since it has the typical VHS look with lines running on the bottom of the picture. Maybe it's some kind of VHS screener?

Either way it looks very pink throughout. Here's that shot that was posted above and I think it matches the "Featurette completed shot" pretty well:

In your opinion, Yoo_Too, how is the audio quality on this mix compared to the DVD's 5.1 and Blu's 6.1?

I'm really the wrong person to ask, since I don't have a surround system. But I've read lots of people's comments on the newer mixes saying they are too heavy on the bass, so maybe these will sound a bit better?

Any ETA for this project?

Is it months from completion?

We've only finished SW. Once DJ has released the sideprojects we might start on ESB. And by start, I mean kinda continue where we left off. The scripts are done for both ESB and ROTJ and have been for a long time, but I've had health problems for the last year and a half which has prevented me to work as much as I used to with these projects.

The thing that will take a lot of time is finding the stuff we want to clean up and getting it done. ESB is full of dirt, glue marks and those kinds of things. And the 97 SE's will need synching to the 04 DVDs since that's what DJ bases his audio synch on.

So we'll see, it'll be done when it's done and unfortunately it's taken a long time. You'll at least get to see the first one soon!

Stjärnornas Krig - Swedish 16mm print (Released)

myscamore, the correct titling for TESB in Swedish is "Det Imperiet Slår Tillbaka", literally The Empire Strikes Back.

Even though I'm not msycamore, I'm swedish too and first of all I don't understand the reason for bumping this thread with something like that.

And if you know swedish, "Det imperiet slår tillbaka" is not correct. It would mean "That empire strikes back". The movie has always been called "Rymdimperiet slår tillbaka", which means "The space empire strikes back".

Would a nice 1080p version of the 1981 crawl, from a 35mm print help anyone out at this point?

[Thanks to Team Negative 1 for providing this clip.]

You should post that in the team negative1 thread.

We won't make any alternate versions, we'll simply make the best we can of the GOUT as it is. For our project this isn't useful while it's nice to see some high res scans as always.

(iirc, msycamore has further refined the alien subtitles in this new set, and they are now *really* close to the correct theatrical ones :) )

I think msycamore helped DJ with the subs and timing on the V3 DVDs, but this time it's all my work. Harmy sent me a few photoshop files back when I helped him recreate the original subs for his version, and I used them for this one too. It was a lot of work since the original subs didn't match the closest-looking font completely.

@deepanddark20: While I understand that it was what we all watched on video, theatrical is theatrical and there were no episodes in 1977 so that's how a theatrical version has to be.

@You_Too - thanks for the kind welcome! OK, I'll keep a look out for the v2 blu ray editions. Most of my TV's are 720p only so the v3 DVD's should be OK for now. Any suggestions for a good program to re-author the DVD's? Thanks again!

You're welcome! Actually our blu-rays will be in 720p so you'd probably see the extra resolution even on your TVs. I don't know about re-authoring but check the how-to's part of the forum and maybe somebody has a guide, otherwise you could start a thread about it.
