I'd say if you changed the white balance on the 70mm frames it'd be a pretty accurate source.

Harmy showed a while back with his adjustment of some 70mm frames to match the look of the technicolor IB print scan he's seen, that some of them are very different from the original look. We don't know how they were scanned and with what settings so they can't be completely trusted in my opinion.

Weird and silly question, but as both '77 and '97 are being released at the same time, are you guys making cover art for a 2 pack?

We haven't made any ourselves but if somebody's interested in that, I guess everybody's free to create their own.

Are you removing the Digital smearing

Nope. There is simply no way to do it over the whole movies and make it look good. That damage is done and there's no way we can repair it. But we're doing the best we can with what we have, so if you can stand watching the 2006 bonus DVDs as they are, you're gonna love our version.

@TylerDurden389: I watched the whole clip and that guy has a lot of good points.

@MrBrown: Would you post some more shot comparisons? Not only ones that are blue. You see I think this is a classic hue error, like I've seen on some LD vs DVD comparisons. If it had been a different color timing I think Arnold's skin would've looked more natural, not just another hue.

@TServo2049: I completely agree. And I also wonder why guys like James Cameron who has been doing this for so many years suddenly becomes a fan of this teal/cyan color timing.

Actually, it would be awesome if somebody would make like a documentary and go around and interview all the filmmakers about why they like teal/cyan and why they decide their old films should be changed to it. I would LOVE to know what they think is positive about that. The teal/cyan thing remains a mystery to me.

But for all that is good and holy, please give the consumer the OPTION to CHOOSE.

Exactly. I agree that altering history is wrong, and when altering movies we should indeed have the option to choose.

Would anyone REALLY hate the SW specials editions if their original counterparts were there alongside them?

Not hate, but never watch them either. :)

Wasnt aware that Cameron had an habit to tinker with his movies.

Is there any article or comparaisons somewhere about this?

Here you go. Basically they're new vs old releases comparisons that clearly shows the difference in colors.

Terminator
Aliens
Titanic

It's also worth mentioning that Aliens and Titanic got some things removed or added by CGI in the latest releases. Haven't found anything for Terminator so far.

The worst thing is that the latest releases have far superior resolution than all before but having the wrong colors, fans can't choose between original and altered. Sure, there's the old blu-ray of Terminator but the picture is blurry and full of dirt, and there are HDTV broadcast captures of Aliens and Titanic but they're compressed.

I don't know what it is about the blu-ray era that made previously respected directors go back and change their most popular works. There are way too many examples. Maybe they don't think people will buy the same movies again unless they look different? Different being new in the eyes of mainstream consumers?

Now that would be extremely hard to remove. I guess I'd need a perfect copy of that logo with a clean background to be able to do a test. Not sure it would look good anyway.

there are methods to remove such logos, in a way nobody was ever thought it would be possible. it needs a clean source, like a dvd, and then through an avisynth script it can be done. the method was originally used to get rid of hardcoded subs and then applied for logos as well.

Of course one could layer that part from a DVD over a logo, but that means that the logo area will have lower resolution, plus if the DVD isn't from the same print/source or matches 100% that area would wobble around or just look weird.

@pittrek & NeverarGreat: There's a very little amount of clipping in the white areas, just like pittrek says but it's not much. Should be easy for you to adjust.

@bttfbrasilfan: While you may be right about skin tones being slightly darker, using selective color to just make reds brighter will ruin the strongest reds in the movie that are supposed to be dark or very saturated. If making reds brighter while keeping the saturation it will make everybody look like lobster-men! This is an unfortunate downside to the otherwise amazing plugin that selective color is. It would be nice to find an alternative to be able to accurately do what you intended there.

@TServo2049: I can at least tell you that teal/cyan and blue are separated in our version of T1. But in the case of that film, they added that color grading for the new blu-ray, it sure didn't ever look like that.

Also, a reason I think why it's easier to see a difference between teal/cyan and blue in the theater is because a film print has a wider color gamut than blu-ray. It covers more of the color spectrum on the cyan side.

Maybe one of you guys knows a process to remove the studio logo. You_Too?

If a logo is transparent you can reduce its visibility to a certain degree, but I think it would be hard to remove completely. I haven't seen the logo you're talking about though.

 Here is a sample You_Too.

Now that would be extremely hard to remove. I guess I'd need a perfect copy of that logo with a clean background to be able to do a test. Not sure it would look good anyway.

Actually, before I left the blu-ray alone I made some settings that looked pretty similar to this. Looks nice so far! The only problem with the blu-ray is that there's the pink flashes and magenta tones all over the place that's not supposed to be there, so it's tough to really make a 100% correct color correction. They've messed with this one way too much.

And actually for Harmy I made a correction that removed some of the worst downsides, then he did the final color grading himself like he wanted, looking at a scan of an IB print.

The footage in that trailer is not from the print.

What you linked there is actually the second theatrical trailer for the film. Both trailers can be found on youtube in high quality:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LoNVZRHApqQ

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3PSun1cMTpY

Though I gotta admit that the colors in the trailers are way better and more realistic than the video releases. But sometimes when a trailer is released the color timing for the prints haven't been finished. So who knows what the prints looked like? We could only know if we'd find an actual print or a full version with the color timing in the trailers. Otherwise there wouldn't be any way to color correct it anyway.
