Well Derby and Coventry City aren't exactly big-time, but yeah, there were exceptions. A large chunk of the team had never played professional football before that tournament though. One of the ESPN commentators (don't remember his name right now) was on the '94 team, and he said as much.

And when people talk about games in the 1950s (ESPN even gives stats from the 30s!) I just laugh. If a team was good (or bad) 50 or 70 years ago, it doesn't really mean squat today. Unless we're talking about brazil, who are consistently brilliant.

Yeah Hotrod, you gotta try and keep it together, especially as you have a kid. A friend of mine went to Relate and it really helped. I myself would be a bit reluctant to try councelling, but sometimes you have to swallow your pride and say bollox to anyone who laughs.

At the same time, if it's totally fucked, best to just call it a day. I dragged a doomed relationship out for 4 years.

I actually feel bad for the US team that nobody back home is really supporting them. Back in 1994, when the World Cup came to the USA, the host nation automatically qualified. The '94 USA team was basically a joke - a handful of amatuers straight out of college. They didn't have a chance.

But these amatuers persevered, and by 2002 team USA was going places. They surprised everyone by making the semi-finals, and their success was the catalyst for the creation of a Soccer Major League (MLS) in America. Those college kids went on to play for some of the best teams all over the world, and helped give other young hopefuls a chance to play their sport on a professional level. Now a new generation of professional football players (as well as some veterans of the early days) are competing in World Cup 2006, and are ranked 5th in the world (which is a little misleading, but it helps my point).

Sure, USA sucked against Czech Republic on Monday, but I can't help feel that these guys deserve a little respect, and a little support. That's why I'm cheering for them.

I made a mistake in my post. I meant to say there's a difference between European and American fans.

But while we're on the subject, there's a difference between European and English fans too. England is part of Europe by name alone. We have a lot more in common with the USA than our neighbours in Europe (I have travelled both places extensively). We are the black sheep of Europe - and not just in sports.

The Chronology of How My love for Lucas has fallen

I look at it this way with Yoda and everything in SW. It all started to crumble in ROTJ, but not enough where it was noticably bad, then when it gets to the PT movies, it just gets really bad. The humor, the dialogue, Yoda, The Emperor, the acting, the plots of the stories, and the plot holes. If you really look at ROTJ, it all started there, and then once the SE & PT were released, the floodgates opened and the saga went from great to mediocre. But don't get me wrong, I still love ROTJ, I just notice now how inferior in quality it is to SW & ESB.
I heartily agree.

I get what Ric is saying. I think he may just be having trouble expressing himself in English. Even with Englsih as my first language, I can't express the difference between European and English sports fans, but there is one.

I fell asleep during the second half of Brazil Vs Croatia, but I saw all of the first (it's hard work being jobless). There was definitely some tasty skills out there, but Brazil didn't seem unstoppable. And what was up with Ronaldo?

Superman Movie

I agree with Jenny about Superman not really having any inner turmoild and not beeing accessible to the readers, but that's because I'm only really familiar with the TV shows, etc. What I have read in this thread about the Superman of the comics interests me immensely, and I am on the verge of going to a comic store to pick up some back issues (I'm especially digging the idea of an aging, grey haired supes). The only trouble is I hate trying to get into a series when there's loads going on and I don't know who's who or what's what. Maybe someone can recommend some key trade paperbacks I should read?
