terror in london
Time
Hey everyone, I'm ok. Thanks for the concern. I was on the underground on my way to work when the train stopped and we were told there was a power surge. Ater about 20 minutes we were told to evacuate. Nobody really knew what was going on but everyone was really cool and calm, even when news of the explosions started to spread - it made me proud to be a Londoner. The Emergency services and citizens reacted brilliantly. We were expecting it I guess, and although people died and were injured, it could have been worse. I think they were going for spectacle rather than killings. It's pretty much business as usual today. I considered staying at home but that's what they want so I am here at work. The ride in on the underground was slightly weird but after a few minutes it was all good. One of my friends was on one of the trains that blew but he sustained no injuries and actually went to work because it was nearer to where he was evacuated than his home. He saw some pretty gory stuff though....

I read a statement from this European Al Queda cell that is claiming responsibility and it said something along the lines of 'London is burning with fear and panic'. Let me just say that is bullshit. We are fine.

My thoughts and prayers are with those who were killed or injured and their familes.

Actually, although my musical heart will always be with Oasis (they were there for me in my teens the same way that Star Wars was when I was a kid) I do quite like blur, especially their later stuff. They got quite experimental and made some really interesting and innovative beats. They don't dance as well as Usher though, I'll give you that.

Star Wars Episode III: The Backstroke of the West
Time
I was reading that at work and burst out laughing. Hilarious!!
I remember I saw the cover of a chinese bootleg of Harry Potter and the text on the back explained how Harry lived a miserable life in a cupboard at the hands of his horrible aunt and uncle and it went something like this:

Harry Potter, the boy who was. His life in the door under the stairs: Miserable, chilly, simply.

I fucking love Oasis. As a teenager in mid-1990s England they were my band. I have seen them live 8 times and, although it is cool to call them 'has beens' or whatever, they still rock and their new album is great - not trying to reclaim former glories, just banging out great tunes. Noel Gallagher is the reason I picked up a guitar and learned to play (not that he's a great guitarist, but that's not the point). Oasis provided the sound track to my youth. True, their lead singer Liam is a bit of a monkey, and they do plagiarise here and there, but there's no denying they are a great band, and since they have acquired a new bassist (Andy Bell) and a new guitarist (Gem Archer) and a new drummer (Zak Starkey, Ringo Starr's son (!)) they are even better. I was gutted they didn't play Live 8 and I am jealous of Shim going to see them, although I am sure I will see them a 9th time sometime soon.
Don't listen to Jedikev, he's an usher fan.

Who are your 10 favorite and least favorite characters from all six SW films?
Time
Good:

Luke Skywalker
Yoda
Han Solo
Obi Wan (Episodes 3- 6)
Darth Vader (before the prequels existed)
ROTJ Emperor
Qui-Gon Jinn
C-3PO
R2-D2
Princess Leia (all films, but mainly ANH, and the bikini scenes in ROTJ)

Bad:

Nute Gunray
Boss Nass
Battle Droids
Crappy uncool Jedi with long necks
Crappy uncool cloning dudes with long necks
Jango Fett
The CGI Max Rebo band
The death sticks guy
Count Dooku (shit name, pointless character)
CGI Jabba

What about you? The moment when you "divorced" from the Lucas policy about SW?

However, in terms of the OT, it would have to be in 1998 when the SEs were released on VHS. When the SEs came out in theaters, I was too excited about being able to see them again on the big screen to care about the changes. In fact, many of them didn't even register with my brain (unless blatantly obvious like Jabba in ANH). However, when I got the VHS set and watched the first movie again, I realized how much changed and decided I didn't care for them and was consequently upset about GL having done them this way.

Bingo

War of the Worlds

I didn't dig signs that much either, and I thought the ending (with the baseball bat and the evrything happens for a reason message) was pretty crappy, but as an aliens taking over the world movie, and the sense of worry/tension/fear it put across, it was better than WOTW, IMO. They were essentially the same movie (an alien invasion from the point of view of one man and his kids).

War of the Worlds

I saw it last night. I usually try to defend a movie and pick out the good bits, but my fierst words as the credits rolled were 'that was shit'. I didn't enjoy it, I didn't get into it. I agree with every single point (positive and negative) made by MeBeJedi. One other thing though that he missed - they made this huge deal out of nothing electrical working, even Super-Tom's cell phone, then in the next scene there is a guy filming the tripod on his video camera!!! Maybe he got the Super-Mecahnic who fixed the car that Tom steals to fix the camera too.
And I personally found Dakota Fanning to be irritating. I was hoping she would get zapped by an alien, but obviously that was never going to happen. Spielberg - I am very disappointed in you. Everybody disses George Lucas but his last film was better than yours.
Signs told the same story much better. If Signs had included a few shots of tripods and the bacteria ending, it could have been called War of the worlds and would have been a far better take on the story.

Though the same is true between Britain and Ireland, right? Aren't there a bunch of small islands inbetween?

No, there's not. There are a few Islands here and there off the cost of England, but they don't spread across the sea to Ireland.
And there are a few points where the sea lies directly between Enland and Ireland without Wales getting in the way, so you're all right.
Splendid Isolation, it's what kept Britain great back in the day.

Now, surely this belongs in the long bridge club thread?

Well, I don't know, but I think the system just stops everything it possibly can and interferes with the PM function as a side effect. As you can see I have no idea what I am taliking about. I just know that I can't send Pms and I can't download stuf, otherwise I would be taking advantage of the super quick broadband and downloading music all day...legally downloading music...Oh fuck it, I admit it, I am an illegal downloader.
They really should just realise that it's always gopnna happen and the industry needs to adapt rather than trying to stop it. itunes is a good start I guess.
