Doctor Who
Time

I just finished watching the first episode of the new series and was pleasantly surprised - the writing was better, the production values seem to have gone up, the film style looks better (more filmic, less BBC) and Matt Smith was very good.  Also, the chick who plays Amy Pond is quite hot :)

I lost interest in Dr Who but I might start watching it regularly again now.  Hopefully it won't turn shite again (Tennant was the Pierce Brosnan of Doctors - good Doctor, crap plots and scripts).

Couldn't care less/Could care less.

This is another one of my "words mean things" pet peeves.

Couldn't agree more, every time I see someone write "I could care less" they always mean "I couldn't care less", I just wish people would think about what they write.

I couldn't care less about x - means you are unable to care less than you do about x, there is nothing that you could possibly care less about.

I could care less about x - means there are things you could care less about than x, but this is practically meaningless, it just means you care about x to some unspecified extent, it's not the least cared about thing, it could be the most but then you should say "I couldn't care more", so really it is just at some unspecified midpoint in your range of ability to care.

This irritates me as well.... unfortunately lots of people on ot.com do it.

OT.com's LOST
Time

Suddenly, a Polar bear comes darting out of the woods and knocks Rambo's head off with one stroke of his paw before he even has a chance to respond, then the bear quickly gobbles down the fallen Vet's torso. MacGyver, thinking fast whips a paper clip out of his pocket and prepares to incompacitate the bear with it, only the bear moves too quickly, bites off the hand holding the paper clip, rips the man's trousers off with his teeth, and proceeds to hump him until he dies of internal bleeding while the rest of the castaways stare on in shocked horror.

This whole turn of events brings the castaway named C3PX to exclaim, "Holy shit! I sure wish we hadn't driven that Ferris guy to run off into the woods by himself by insisting he throw his guns into the ocean."

Because of the gratuitous gore, OT.COm's lost is moved to a late-night time slot.  Ratings fall and the show gets cancelled.

Oh yeah!! I didn't know what you were talking about at first, but I do now. I miss those things myself, they were awesome for do-it-yourselfers like me, these things could all sorts of Macgyver type stuff. Especially the one's with no holes on the bottom. Anyhow, great pick!!

I think teh purpose of those caps was so the bpttle could stand up - it had to have a rounded end because the pressure from the fizzy liquid inside would warp a regular bottle.  Or something.  Nowadays we have bottles with the moulded peaks on the bottom - still rounded, but lots of little rounded bits.  Moulding tech must have improved I guess.

I miss having to actually go to a friends house to see if they are in.

I miss having to be at home to receive a phone call, and calling friends only to get their Mum telling me they're not home.

I miss waiting for friends for an hour outside the cinema, wondering if maybe something has happened to delay them, and having no way of getting in touch.

LOST
Time

My thoughts on Season 6 so far:

The alternate timeline is real and running concurrently with the Island timeline. I think we must assume that the bomb worked and sunk the island in that version. Obviously from the differences between ep 1 and what we have seen this season, the butterfly effect has altered things there somewhat.

The problem is, for the bomb to work and sink the island, somebody had to detonate it, but if Jack etc never crashed on the island and therefore never went back to the seventies, they couldn't have detonated it.  The creation of a parallel timeline resolves this... it seems that all the characters in the parallel universe will now come together in a different way (eg Locke getting a spinal consultation from Jack)... perhaps they will eventually end up on the island by different means because that was always their fate.  They can then go back to the seventies and detonate the bomb, completing the cycle.  However... the island is now at the bottom of the sea, so that can't happen...

I know this has all been said by others... just trying to sum it up for myself really.

Great movies you hate.

Kubrick's films can be pretty enjoyable, but I really don't see them as masterpieces. It seems like he tried to be looked at as a genius. I always saw him as a great innovator in the pre-modern age of film.

Godfather is the number one film on my list of great movies I hate. I gave it a chance, but I never really understood it's popularity. The only thing I can praise it for is the acting, aside from that the story is dull. I can also praise it for destroying the mafia genre. Let's face it, Godfather has been remade and remade and ripped off countless times. I don't understand the thrill in it. I have been shunned by friends for not liking it. I must have a deformity or something, because I am the only one who hates it. Even Roger Ebert loves it and he doesn't like anything.

White Dog Shit!

I am 100% serious! When I was a kid and played or walked in the park or friends yards the poop was white and better able to be avoided.  These days it blends in to well...

Totally with you on that one!  My brother and I used to joke that ET looked like an old dog poo when he turned white (at the end of the film when he was sick).  Apparently the white was something to do with them putting chalk (!) in dog food, and they no longer do.

Anyway... when I was a kid I loved smokey bacon flavour 'Thundercats' crisps.

I don't have any problem with the Ultimate Fury being black. Don't make assumptions about me based on not knowing a thing about me. But I do have a problem with Marvel films being based on this new-fangled Ultimate stuff. It should be quite understandable that I would want Marvel movies to be based on the classic stuff I grew up with and not some new stuff I don't care about.

Word is the new spidey reboot is going to be ultimate-based as well.

Stephen King also went back and altered 'The Gunslinger' to fit with the later Dark Tower books.  The original can be found on ebay etc so it's not a massive deal, and the Dark Tower series is so awesome that I'm glad the first book now fits, but still... it's very much George Lucas territory - he wrote the first book, which spawned a sequel and ultimately a 7 part epic, so went back and 'fixed' the earlier work to fit later ideas.

P.S If you haven't read the Dark Tower, read it now.

How was the 4-toed statue was resolved?  I don't remember.

Totally agree with what you're saying though... not sure they'll be able to deliver.  Personally I'm not feeling the whole 'Jacob and his brother' thing... if it turns out to be two Gods having fun with the humans I'll be disappointed.
