PROMETHEUS was (Alien 0?) NOW NO LONGER SPOILER FREE.
Time

Firstly, Bingowings, awesome blog post.

I saw Prometheus in 3D at the IMAX a couple of days ago and have been digesting it ever since.  My initial reactions, both during the viewing and immediately after, were ones of disappointment and irritation, not just at the muddled story but also at the sloppy editing/script/narrative (if it was a case of me simply not liking the movie that's one thing but bad editing, characterisation, dialogue etc are inexcusable from a filmmaker of Scott's calibre).

Anyways... After two days of pondering and reading countless reviews, I still feel the same, and it seems the rest of the web agrees with me, but I've warmed to the film slightly (inexplicable really as the deeper I delve the more bad points I uncover) and hope there's a decent director's cut in the future.

I wonder if I'll ever be able to watch Alien again without thinking of those damn blue guys in the space jockey suit...

As a side note, the visuals were impressive, especially on the massive IMAX screen. It was the first time 3D has ever not been a hindrance to my viewing pleasure.

one is a space truck and looks dingy and older and the other is a science vessel/corporate ambassadorial/store window ship and looks flashy and new.

My car probably has the same technology as the finest limousines used to cater to diplomats and I would bet garbage trucks do as well.  Technology isn't limited to dog & pony show vehicles.  It's driven by cost of manufacture, cost of maintenance, and usability.

I understand this isn't a primer for Alien, but you can't ignore the fact that it's dripping with Alien crossover.  To me, it should look more consistent.

I totally agree.  It won't ruin the story but it would have been nice to see more consistency.

If you're actually considering renting an apartment is it safe to assume this is an extended visit?

I'm afraid all I know in that regard is that whenever we used to visit my grandfather it was tough to find a cheap hotel; namely, anywhere near Penn Station is expensive.  Then again, we usually visited on-season for holidays (X-Mas time etc.)  Wish I could be of more use.

Not long-term, just 5 nights.  A colleague told me they once rented an apartment for a week because it worked out cheaper than a hotel in a similar location.

Hey Guys,

I'm travelling to New York City in October.  I've been a bunch of times but always on business so never had to book myself and never ventured far out of Manhatten.  This time I'm going with my girlfriend using my own wallet, so just wondered if you guys could give me some good, honest advice about where to stay on a budget.  As I'll be with my other half, I don't want to stay in a skanky hotel or a dangerous area, but also don't want to spends thousands.

What are some good areas?  Any suggestions for nice but affordable hotels?  Is renting an apartment a better option?  Easy access to all the usual tourist stuff would be good.

Any advice greatly appreciated.

:)

New Vodafone Ad featuring Yoda

I can't wait to see Yoda in a Skoda myself.

Now that could work. And seeing as Skoda is part of VW, isn't impossible.

I can see both sides of the coin here. None's posts in this thread resonate with me, but I appreciate Alexrd's views too. I guess I'm coming at it from a certain perspective, that of a 30-something Star Wars fan who also happens to write ads (including a couple for Vodafone). So I hate this in the way a lot of Star Wars fans in their 30s hate that stupid CGI yoda and what the franchise has become, while also thinking it's a particularly weak, sloppy commercial, from an industry point of view.

Maybe Star Wars isn't 'dead', but what it once was for many people is now lost forever (and has been for some time).

What's so bad about it?

The Script

The Pacing

The Direction

The Acting

The lazy creative idea behind it (using a smartphone is a bit like having the force... Yoda sounds like Voda)

The Contrived nature of the set up (Why is Yoda in a Japanese Restaurant?  Why did that guy bring his old phone out to dinner?)

The thing about him tasting like Wasabi

What's up with Yoda's voice?

Wow, people here do have a problem with Star Wars being part pop culture... Besides, Star Wars being used for ads is nothing new.

But it's a really bad ad.

I like the VW ad with the kid vader (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R55e-uHQna0) and I like the Adidas Cantina ad (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Zd_khk6zXo).

I just don't like crap ads.  I make ads for a living - this one's crap.  It uses Star Wars really, really badly, and I guess I don't like the fact that Lucas is cool with his creations getting shit on (most directors don't hold the rights so don't have  a say or get overuled by third parties... George doesn't have those problems, in fact, Lucasfilm and ILM produced this turd).

Aw man! I wish I could see some Banksy stuff around where I live!

By MBW being a Banksy creation, what do you mean?

Many, including myself, believe that Exit Through the Gift Shop is a Kaufmanesque performance piece/inside joke in addition to being a documentary. I think Mister Brainwash is a character created by banksy and Thierry Guetta meant to satirize how movies, music, fashion, and advertising copy street art and street culture to make money, all the while pretending that they're the real innovators.

What he said.

Same here.  I really enjoyed it first and foremost as a documentary about the birth of street art, but also just as a quirky story.

I'm a Londoner and see Banksy stuff all over the streets here, so it was cool to get more of an insight into how he works, and I used to live in LA so seeing Shepard Fairy creating his art in Kinkos on Vine where I used to print flyers was very cool.

There's some debate over whether or not Mister Brainwash is even real or just a Banksy creation.  I have no idea, but his story was interesting either way.

Is it just me or does anyone else agree that this is a better film than Godfather II?

I like it better than the Godfather which is considered blasphemy.

Godfather a film Coppola did not even want to make and did not write the book it was based on. An adaptation he did to get out of debt.  Debt largely caused by Lucas and THX 1138 and Warners cancelling all Zoetrope projects.

Godfather may be the best film of its type.  The acting is top notch, the directing and the screenplay, however it is far from original and is overrated slightly imho.

Yeah but what about Godfather II?

The Mrs. and I just finished Mocking Jay, the third Hunger Games book.  It tooks us most of a year to get through the first half- then we read the last half in a weekend.  I had heard that the book was a real let down after the first two, but I was determined to enjoy it.  Well... the first half is hard to enjoy.  It really picks up in the second half, right up until the rather disappointing ending.

We?

Just curious how this works.

I was gonna ask the same thing.

Obesity and Overweight

I am probably way off here, but I can't help but see this thread as being intended to be a bit of a gloat fest. It isn't like anyone who is actually obese is going to want to admit it to everyone, especially when the OP says he assumes probably 60-70% of us are overweight but makes certain to announce he isn't one of them.

Maybe you're onto something though, perhaps it would be nice to know how many of our fellow forum members are less attractive and/or dumber and/or poorer than us. I propose a series of new threads, one for posting our college GPA or to admit we didn't waste time with college, another one where we post our yearly income, and another one where we can post statistics on how frequently each of us gets laid. This could be fun!

I'm poor as shit but I get laid regularly so it's ok.
