Star Wars Blu Ray Impressions

Grevious was supposed to be like darth vader, only he was so f'd up that he was more droid and the droid body kept him alive. GL and co. didn't want him to be exactly like Darth Vader, but somewhat like him. I guess they ran out of ideas for a new villian.

And Stephen Speilberg did a lot of constructive critiscizm to GL, "" His ideas were a little weird.

The deleted PT scenes weren't that interesting since most of it was Computer generated and unfinished.

I'm not surprised. I'm one of them. I think its worth it. I just can't figure out if i liked the added "No" in ROTJ.

I'm one of them as well, and I don't really regret my purchase. I really do hate the "NOOOOOOO", though.

Fan backlash got rid of Luke's 97SE scream, though, so I'm hoping this will eventually disappear as well.

good i'm not the only one

I'm about half way through Disc 8.

The "fly through" of the Lucasfilm archives is a neat introduction. Unfortunately, now every potential master criminal in the world knows what George keeps in his nondescript barn on the ranch. :P

The rotating views of props models and costumes are pretty neat. At this resolution, the models are really showing their age. Vader's TIE appears to have been dropped at some point since it was shown on the old DC Laserdisc set. A bit of the front cockpit window is missing, and one of the wings is askew!

Seeing the prototype models is also really cool. The prequel ships could have looked more like them. ;)

Tons of pre-production art here. Some of it will be very familiar if you own "The Art Of" books for each film.

You can literally see the seams and stitches in some of the costumes.

It's interesting the matte paintings are about the shape and size of our modern video displays. The comparison wipes between them and movie footage leads to one goof though. The original Cloud City apartment painting wipes to it's CGI replacement. Whoops.

I would have personally liked to see even more props and costumes from each film than are shown here. An old fashioned Laserdisc style still gallery would not have taken up much space. Nor would the inclusion of the old Laserdisc extras.

The interview segments are really short, but informative. I never knew what was the first FX shot ILM actually completed for Star Wars.  A piece in the Dagobah section with Lucas discussing the Force sidetracks into prequel footage long enough to make you wonder if somebody goofed up.

It's irksome to see some vintage behind the scenes footage presented here in better video quality than the old documentaries got.

Can't say much about the deleted scenes that hasn't been said already elsewhere. Been waiting more than half my life to see some of these, and having them in HD warts and all is probably one saving grace of the whole hullabaloo. If you can get this disc by itself on Ebay, do it!

The "play all" feature is nice if you hate button mashing the remote through sub menus all day. (Or just want to watch the deleted scenes.) Being able to start at the beginning of the Empire or Jedi sections without skipping a hundred chapters to get to them would have been nice.

Will slog through the Jedi section tomorrow.

i finished it and am on disc 9 now. I found all the art work, interviews and overviews interesting. it was worth the watch.

Okay, who actually HATES the Prequels

Though most of the PT was CGI. A lot of it was miniature models. But the CGI kinda blended in with it is all. Most the characters now adays are in the blue suit technology as to actually get the character movements down.

And TPM. i always found that to be the best of the PT and gave me my favorite character. Darth Maul. i wish we could've seen more of him. Can only find him in the EU now.

I do like the PT very much. I just will never like it as much as the OT.

pretty cool. I wouldn't mind seeing some of the scenes reinserted into the movies. Such as the ROTJ scene with Luke building his light saber. Most of the scenes i saw deleted though, were done for good reason IMO.

I tend to agree with you. Most of the deleted scenes would have difficulty justifying themselves in a new edit. After all, the director and editor assembled a final product with a deliberate pacing that would be interrupted with the insertion of extra shots.

However, I experimented with re-inserting the Treadwell, Tosche Station, and Biggs scenes into ANH. I even put in appropriate wipe transitions, music blending, and experimented with sound fx. The results were satisfactory and the only down sides were slower pacing of the plot. The upside was a better understanding of Luke's backstory. Also, the reunion with Biggs at the end of the movie makes much more sense.

Only thing about it, is that it does introduce luke prematurely. While yes, it was a cool shot, the original revealation makes more sense to me.

On the Biggs note however, i do agree. It would probably help the background of their friendship.
