The original negative is conformed to the Special Edition, which was not fully digitized until the DVD master was made. However, Lucasfilm likely stored the pieces of the negative they removed, and they have recently been archiving every single piece of film and audio they have. So in a sense, the original negative has been digitized, but it’s not assembled or restored.

Do you know what resolution the negatives were digitized in? i.e. 1080P?

Really hope Lucasfilm has digitized all their OT recordings in the highest quality available. Things like music and sound effects, etc.

The stuff they’ve been archiving recently is most likely 4k, but who knows.

The thing I’m worried about is the original negative of the OT. Lucas said it was in terrible shape back in the early 90’s, i.e. fragile and pink colors, etc. So, I’m just wondering how they’d do a 4K scan on it 25 year later?

I still hope they at least try to do a 4K scan of all of the original pieces of the negative for the OT soon. I do believe they’d said that 4K scan they did recently was of the special edition. Whatever that means. Hopefully more comes out on that. As I know we all were hoping that 4K scan was of the pre-special edition stuff.

The negatives were restored to a degree before the special edition work began, so it should be in okay shape.

Guys, we have a new winner for The Sword in the Stone!

The Amazon WEB-DL is 1080p, has no logo, and fewer artifacts than the best HDTVrips around; better bitrate too.

Where is this WEB-DL to be found? There are a few of them floating around on Usenet, and I’m not sure which one people think is the best. Any info would be appreciated. NeverarGreat and I are trying to track down the one mentioned earlier in the thread.

Amazon 😉

I don’t think you can totally discount the fact that Star Wars as of yet hasn’t had even an inkling of a mention in any articles about the deal despite being fairly big news that Disney now holds the rights to ALL SW movies, probably one of their biggest and more profitable franchises alongside the Marvel Cinematic Universe. And the fact that news on Mike Verta’s restoration has also gone completely cold at the same time.

If Disney really are trying to keep the whole thing quiet in lieu of an official release in the near future then I highly doubt you are going to hear anything but denials via official and even most unofficial channels. They’ll have that shit locked down water tight…

I really don’t think Mike’s silence has anything to do with this. Most likely what’s happened with Legacy is they seized all assets related to the film, made him sign an NDA, and threw it all in the vault to be forgotten. Near the end Mike also seemed more interested in using it as a restoration proof of concept than an actual release. I doubt Legacy will ever see the light of day.

If George himself isn’t the problem, I think when the ultimate 4K box set comes out, we’ll probably get a quick-and-dirty HD scan of an interpositive or release print packaged with it as a special feature, a la the GOUT. Not the kind of loving restoration we’d hope for, but something. If he is, I don’t think anything will happen while he’s alive.

Honestly I think a quick and dirty scan would pacify most people, myself included.

Good morning! What’s kept the original theatrical editions off of home video is the same thing that’s always been doing that. It’s not a studio thing.

And for what it’s worth(asterisk), I’d love to have 'em.

(asterisk)it is worth nothing

If he’s implying that it’s George, I doubt he has any say. If it’s money, I could concede that.

If memory serves, the stuff everyone was looking forward to about the blu-ray bonus discs (deleted scenes, vintage docs) were very OT-centric, and this is back when George was still in charge!

That’s partly because the special features for the PT in the Complete Saga set are horrible. There is so many good features in the DVD releases it’s a damn shame they didn’t bring them over for the BD.

Please, check both test clips and let me know what do you think about!
You’ve got some sort of artifact in the first scene where the part of a tree on the left side of the frame shifts.

I just hope Disney pulls the plug on EA’s Star Wars license in the future. I’d love to see a new KOTOR from BioWare (or a new RPG from CD Projekt Red).

I’ve lost what little hope I had for a KotOR 3. Even with EA owning Bioware, having exclusive rights to the Star Wars license, KotOR being made available on Xbone and KotOR 2 having a massive update a year or two ago on steam. Setting aside that the game series is over a decade old and it’s no longer considered “canon”, what really made me lose hope was EA shutting down Visceral because of the “linear single player” Star Wars game they were developing. I still had hope. After seeing Deus Ex get a sequel after over a decade I had hope for KotOR, but no longer. It’s a shame because it is one of the finest role-playing experiences out there along with Ultima Underground, The Elder Scrolls chapter 2: Daggerfall and Baldur’s Gate.

OMG I need CD project red Bethesda to work on a Star Wars game that would be amazing

That would basically just be Fallout 4.

Just to clarify Althor you are correct the 97 SE were cropped from the original 2:35:1 ratio as evident on the SE LD trilogy. Especially Star Wars. It was a tighter crop more likely to be 2:20. Watching these reels really shows the potential and what could be. Agree that once complete this will blow away the Blu ray.

I think the cropping was a mastering error exclusive to the Laserdiscs, nut the intended theatrical ratio.

They wear thongs out in the desert? All that Tatooine sand trapped between the toes and under the nails…

Thongs with jeans look so bad.

Are thongs and sandals the same thing? I’m totally lost here.

Oh right, in America you call those skimpy underwear bottoms thongs. Weirdos. I think that what we normal people call thongs you call “flip-flops.”

Probably because the underwear looks like sandals for your butt.

Annoyingly, a hair got into the gate of the scanner on Reel3, and I have to rescan the entire reel.

Part of the downside of working remotely.

sigh

Anyway, here is a 720P sample, complete with dancing hair, nothing done other than a very quick levels setting, thought people might want to see it in motion.

https://we.tl/zp0MntsHeh

Note the Technicolor-style cue-dots/reel markers at the end. It’s about 200MB in size, I tried to make the file size small enough for anyone to get a look at it.

A higher bitrate and bit-depth version is uploading now for those who want something bigger.

EDIT: It’s up. 1.5GB. https://we.tl/SxaAFMqUAg

Man, that CG is so jarring. It’s way more so here than on the Blu Ray.

I’m kind of shocked that some of you guys are more excited by the prospect of this allowing Star Wars/Superhero movie rights to be cleaned up rather than horrified at how this shows that it’s within Disney’s power to own more than half of the studios producing mainstream movies. Hopefully this won’t fall through.

It’s definitely a concern of mine, but the prospect of an official release of the OUT is clouding my judgement.
