What happened to all the original SW prints.?

IIRC, Mike Verta has reported that the “destroy order” is still in effect. If Lucasfilm (now Disney) happens to get their hands on prints of the OOT, they will destroy them.

Just seems so stupid to destroy a piece of history, fair enough it may have once been common practise but to destroy a piece of film from that ers today is just ridiculous…

Actually (again, IIRC) the original destroy order dates from when there were 1997SE film prints out there. Theatres would get the reels, send them back to the studios, and the studios would send them back out again (not destroy them). That was normal. The order was to destroy all copies of the OOT as they came back in, so that only 1997SE prints would go back out. So even worse than you thought…

LOL…!! Just when I thought it could not get any worse you hit me with that…!!! I do not know what to say I am actually disgusted at that, I take it the order is from George Lucas and I just wonder what he hates so much about the original print of his films…? He can not seriously think all the shit cgi he added makes a better movie… I still have nightmares from the first time I saw Jabba in the hanger lol…

As I understand it, in most cases, the prints were either returned to the studio or destroyed:

destroying a print with a saw

Shipping prints around the country (and the world) is expensive, so it was often left to the Theaters to dispose of the prints. Some would just go out back in the dumpster, and may have been rescued by collectors, while others may have been taken by theater employees rather than being destroyed.

If you ever Google “Roddy McDowall FBI” you’ll find out just how illegal it was (and no doubt still is, at least in strictly legal terms) to be caught with prints in your house. The 35mm prints will always belong to the studios.

Obviously a few did survive, and we’re all very grateful that they did. In fact, given the red fading of the Eastman stock of hte 1960s and 1970s, even the studios were grateful that some of their prints had been rescued by collectors because without them some films may have been gone for good.

Bloody hell… I wish I never asked LOL… all those original prints that must have been destroyed…!! I take it the studio keeps a master copy for archival purposes…?

Imagine being lucy enough to be walking past the dumpster and finding it full of 35mm movies…!

TN1 sort of imploded, so who really knows what’s going on there. I know that there are plans to release a recolored and cleaned up version of the Grindhouse soon, so keep an eye out for that.

Will do, and I was going to ask whatever happened to team negative 1 it from the post’s I have read it seemed to go sour with the release of ESB…? Did something happen.?

Nothing happened to the members of the team, but some members of this community made some (false) accusations against them and their account here was banned.

Damn… did they get there account reinstated once the accusations were proven false… are they still operating elsewhere…?

Harmy's RETURN OF THE JEDI - Grindhouse 35mm LPP (Released)

Is this the same as Harmy ROTJ 2.5…? or was this a different release.?

Harmy’s ROTJ 2.5 is a reconstruction of the theatrical version based off the Blu-rays, in an attempt to create a version of the movie as high quality as possible. On the other hand, this release is just a straight-up scan of a film reel from the movie’s original theatrical release. It has a lot more film-damage and doesn’t have quite as much detail and clarity in the image, but it does have the advantage that what you’re seeing is 100% the same as what was shown in theaters in the eighties. Which one is better is really up to personal preference.

WOW… I would love a copy of this one if it is a straight up sacn from a genuine print, I don’t mind the film damage I just want to see the version that was ment to be seen… Cheers bud.

Team Negative1 - The Empire Strikes Back 1980 - 35mm Theatrical Version (Released)

Here is the current plan for the release of Empire Strikes Back - Sanitized.

1 Just to get the ball rolling, a first 25 G mkv file, which will be a bare release 3.0
for those that just want to get it first, and play it their computers:

  • English 35mm audio (not restored)
  • 1080p video h.264 encoding

2 After that a slightly improved version 3.1 - 25 G BD ISO, which is for people that
would like to burn it to a disc, and watch it on TV, or projectors:

  • Basic menu
  • English 35 audio
  • 1080p video h.264
  • Possible color correction on a few scenes

===============================================================
We really don’t have time to polish it any more currently or
add the usual features.

We would like the community to help in releasing these :

1 Subtitles (English, and others)
2 Make it GOUT compatible
2a Include Different mixes
3 Once GOUT compatible
3a Include different audio languages

4 Optional - Color correction on certain scenes

If you work on any of these, please post them here, and we will credit
you once done, and package those along with it.

At this point, there will be slight differences from the previous
Grindhouse version, so those files from that can probably be
further improved to be compatible with this release.

As stated, this was never meant to be a full blown restoration,
but a version to hold people over, until a more complete one can
be done.

There will still be some minor issues in it, but you can see from the
previews the amount of cleanup that has been done. It will be a much
more enjoyable version for those that want to sit back and have a bit
more of a polished version, visually.

Team Negative1

Hey Bluto thanks for the reply I got it from this post by Team Negative 1 (After that a slightly improved version 3.1 - 25 G BD ISO)…

GOUT.... HOW MANY VERSIONS..?

Welcome to the forum! Just to sort of help you get a handle on the nomenclature around here, GOUT specifically describes the laserdisc master released as a bonus disc in 2006. As far as I know, the only versions are PAL and NTSC ones of the trilogy.

As far as what you’re getting at (fan made versions of the OT), if you’re including multiple versions of TN1’s, I guess you would include multiple versions of Harmy’s (or not the former).

The RoTJ Grindhouse is a Harmy release, not TN1. Yes, just the one.

There are the Dark Jedi restorations of the GOUT discs (I believe 1.0 - 3.0 of the whole trilogy, and the Team Blu release of SW). There are many laserdisc captures and probably some more things I’m not thinking of.

Hey dude, thanks for the reply I can not beleive how many versions are out there.!! at this point does anyone care anymore about a genuine release of the original trilogy…?

Yeah, people care. There are two or three pretty active threads here about it.

Personally, I think it would be important just as a sign of respect to the films as well as the many fans of the original trilogy, pre-SE. There are a lot of people, even here, who think it’s only a fringe group of a few hundred or thousand who want the original films back. But I think there are many more than that, among the fans of Star Wars who are not necessarily die hard fans who spend all day on theforce.net or r/starwars (these groups strongly supported George over the years, and evolved to do a good job of silencing dissent). On popular media sites and social media, I’ve never seen an article posted about the first three films, where half of the comments weren’t somehow related to the unaltered versions. And I don’t think that’s coming from us, here…

Of course, there’s always the chance that, if they did release the unaltered trilogy, they could do a great job with it. If not (perhaps quite likely), it will still be an amazing resource for fan edits that further refine the attempt.

Yeah fingers crossed One day it will happen maybe Disney are the one’s to finally do it, the films should be seen the way they were originally made, let’s be honest none of us really like all the shite Lucas added to the trilogy… I do wonder what was going through his mind…? I have never gotten over when I first saw Jabba in the hanger… Christ.!
