lifting dialogue

By the way extracting the individual channels doesn't help me at all, i've found out. All the sound is in the center, and the other channels are used to merely enhance. so I guess i'll have to fool with someother way of getting dialog off.

http://neversaymccloryagain.ohmss-007.com/creative01.html -- is an interesting tutorial. It will work to a point. But i'll deal with the sound later anyhow.

Thanks for the help thus far :-)

I've actually taken the vob files (not demuxed or if I got the term wrong, where the audio and video is in a single file and not seperate streams) and converted them to divx format. It works well in ulead's media studio pro. When I renamed the vob files and loaded them up into MSP, there would be sync issues, and it would be tougher on the program because the files were bigger. I'm just thinking if I re-rip, demux, then split up the channels and then do my business with them, and then have to re-sync them, i'd get some problems.

by the way, is BeSweet free or do I have to pay for it, because I don't have any money right now.

Thanks alot for the reply and link.

As far as the 5.1 soundtrack goes, when I demux the audio, usually (via dvd decrypter) there's a little message on delay (like so many milliseconds or whatever) -- Wouldn't I have a problem resyncing the audio back up because of this? And could you also provide me a link to a webpage or software that actually splits up ac3 audio to their respective channels as audio files. (I remember there was something about some software that will convert, I have an ac3 filter I just need software to split up the tracks into something usable).

Any other help is appreciated, thanks!

I wonder if anyone has any techniques for lifting out dialogue from a soundtrack. I realize there are a couple of issues with this, one is that audio is continuous, two, is that there's no known tool that could actually take out the dialogue, and three, you can't perfectly extract dialogue from and other background audio.

That being said, I would think some of you might have some techniques for at least doing a decent job. So I can take dialogue and replace the music. If there's a way to do a decent enough job, say through an equalizer or some enveloping mechanism, i'd greatly appreciate any tips you could give me.

Please do not reply to this and tell me you can't do it. I know you can't actually extract dialogue into a baked audio track, but you can get a close enough approximation of it, that it would not be that noticeable.

Thank you.

Indiana Jones 4

As far as i've read, Indy will be about the same age Ford is now. Something about fighting communists instead of nazi's (although this could just be a rumor). Not to mention, the fact that Ford has affected a couple of real life rescues even though he is "old". It's not totally unbelievable, it will just have to be done more carefully.

This Movie must be stopped!!!!
Time
It only matters if the sequels/remakes are either bad or good. If you don't want to watch them, then don't, otherwise what's the point of complaining about it? Unless you're a hollywood mover'n'shaker you're not going to make one bit of difference. The only way you can affect things is by putting your money into something (ie watching the movie) or not (ie not watching the movie).

Codecs/Format to use for a preservation project?
Time
It was kind of hard to get a decent set of pictures that showed it, eventually I had to capture with huffy uv and convert it into an image sequence. I won't circle anything in this image but i backed the contrast down so you could see the individual lines. Top and bottom are taken from a "paused" frame on the laser disc... (That is I paused it and then captured the video feed and then extracted the frames)...

http://uhfgood.artoo.net/artemp.png

The only thing I can say about it is the bands you can see in the two pictures. It was hard to find pictures that looked at all different. If they look the same to you, then I don't know what to say. I realize I probably can't do anything about it, but I decided to post it anyways.

I've also decided to do a straight capture to mpeg 2 for direct copy to dvd, just for watching, and then i'll segment out the movie with some new captures using huffyuv. I don't actually have enough disk space to hold all 3 movies with huffyuv. with the huffyuv segments i'll see if I can store them on some dvd -/+ r's. I'm also considering making them into image sequences, so I can mess with them even if I don't have a codec. (If I do the later, i guess i want to inverse telecine and probably deinterlace and such... I don't really know alot about that though)...

Any help is greatly appreciated thanks!

Codecs/Format to use for a preservation project?
Time
First my setup -
AMD Athlon 1700 XP (1.4 ghz processor)
512 megs of memory
Windows 2000 Professional (w/SP4)
ATI All-In-Wonder 9600 XT
Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS

I want to know what I should use for my own star wars laser disc preservation.
I have a Pioneer CLD-M460 LaserDisc/5 CD player
I have the Definitive collection star wars laser discs.

I probably don't have enough money for more different versions, so i'm stuck with just these. Obviously I have ATI's own .VCR format, I have MPEG2 directly (as these are going to eventually be on dvd), also windows media, and finally i'm able to use huffyuv only through virtualdub. What should I use to capture and to edit the movies in? I haven't done a full comprehensive test but I think huffyuv works ok. I only did a test on a capture from the tv tuner, and it had some jerkinss, however it might just be from the conflict between my ati and sound blaster cards. Normal capture through video in (analog) doesn't seem affected by this conflict, but i'll have to check to make sure.

Also I don't have enough money to shell out for a new laser disc player, and this one outputs an image quality where it appears as though each scan line fluctuates in brightness, (producing a shimmering effect going through my tv)... This is not the same as the vhs deterioration problem whereby the top of the tv flashes between dark and bright, but is alot more subtle and over the whole screen. Please give some advice.

I didn't post in the star wars preservation forum yet because i'm just starting out, and these are more general technical issues.

Thanks for any advice

Info Wanted: Do I need to do an OT preservation dvd?
Time

After reading the messages on the various preservation projects. I’m looking at my own. I haven’t started anything yet but shelled out about 80 bucks for a laser disc player and the definitive collection laser discs. I’m almost wondering if I should do this at all. Maybe I should just get one of your copies and make do with that. It’s disheartening to think I came in late doing my own (and I haven’t even started yet).

I guess it would be a good idea to do a direct copy to dvd so I can have it to watch at least. No need to get special with it.

I was mostly thinking if I ended up doing something like this, i’d take the original version and fix things that I thought should have been fixed with the SE’s. Just the general removing garbage mattes, matte lines. And doing stuff that makes the not so great looking stuff look great. At least great as I can get with a cheap ld player and the definitive edition.

Your 2 cents (or tuppence if you happen to be British) ?

When I heard the movies were going to be rereleased in the theatres, I was hoping they fixed everything that was a problem from either a production, or state of the art in 77 (that is removing all garbage mattes, matte lines, jump cuts, messed up saber shots, etc)... I wasn't expecting any extra computer graphics, but merely the exact original trilogy but just as though it were being made today. I read some people arguing about preservation or not. I don't care about physical preservation of all the flaws that were in the originals, but I do care about presveration via drama. That is, a cg dewback in the background on tatooine is ok because the animatronic they had didn't work in 77.... This isn't something that changes the pacing or drama in anyway (other than maybe drawing your eye to it if you're an fx nut)... So this x0 project is very interesting for that. Of course before you do any alterations having a pristine copy of your source material is a good idea. (And pristine is subjective here as we're talking about laserdiscs)...

just my 2c

Keep up the good work

Thought on de-SE'ing the DVD
Time
Curious if this has been brought up in this thread (probably has but i don't remember everything i read in this long thread). Why not take a laserdisc with highest resolution (pal ld's) and make sure they are fullscreen dvd's (pan and scan or whatever). And seeing if you can't piece together scenes to patch into the dvd's. I'm mostly thinking that depending on how large something is, you might have enough size in a fullscreen pal copy that wouldn't look so horrible in with the regular dvd res. Say for instance Vader's head just the mask down to the neck, now on dvd in widescreen it will be smaller. pal fullscreen might be larger but when resized to fit the smaller dvd, it might be similar resolution that way.

Just a curious idea, which probably wouldn't work, but you never know.

photoshop help

Although I don't have Photoshop, you could try using a magic wand tool (usually a wand type icon) and select the black area, and then go to a menu and "invert" the selection, which would get just the button itself (not just the square with the image in it)

Keith

ps. I don't know anything about photoshop, but I imagine it has this as even old software programs had magic wand tools, and an option to invert a selection.

A better laser disc player?
Time
What is the form of this streaking effect? Essentially when I play laser discs from my current player, I see each line change in brightness, it's not enough to stop from watching (or recording) it, but it's enough that I want to look for another player -- this could be mistaken as a streaking effect. If you mean this then this is what mine is already doing, but if you're thinking more smearing or something else then that's something different.

BTW thanks for replying guys

A better laser disc player?

Okay yes i know about the x0 project, and yes I know that it's probably the best, but it's out of my price range... In any case, i'm wondering if you guys can let me know of any decent laser disc players out there, that I can grab on ebay. Currently I got a Pioneer CLD-M460, I notice little artifacts like scanlines brightening and darkening, and various other things... I'm thinking maybe i don't have a very good LD player. I got this LD player off of ebay for about 20 bucks (sans shipping), but i'm considering reselling it and getting a better one. Any recommendations?

Qui Gon's death.
Time
How about this, it doesn't matter how they died. You do see Anakin's spirit at the end of Jedi. The only conclusion one could draw from this is that only those that have good in them, remain. Vader still had some good in him, and thus his spirit remained behind. So now you say, well Qui-Gon was good and I didn't see his spirit. Well the only thing I can think of is when Obi-Wan is asking him not to go against the council again. One might could conclude that Qui-Gon isn't such a great guy, and maybe even a troublemaker. Maybe the virgence in the force wasn't anakin but rather Qui-Gon, and maybe he's the reason Anakin turned into Darth. But now it's just all supposition.

Info Wanted: for my first steps on restorations?
Time
Quick question though, like I said in the first message, ANH features that old way where the picture gets brighter/darker (having to do with the AGC), but empire and jedi both employ the method where, it just stops anything from recording it. That is, it seems to play fine, but I can't record it still, where as, the first one, I can record it, but the picture is all messed up. So question is, do I need to get two seperate things for that?

Info Wanted: for my first steps on restorations?
Time

Okay, i’ve always wanted to do what you guys are doing on restorations. But I have several problems for my first steps, one is I have the vhs ‘matted’ widescreen versions (Special letterbox collectors edition, the one with the hologram sticker on the front), which means the resolution even for vhs is exceptionally low. The nice thing is I can still watch these babies, but still can tell the degradation of the tapes which are almost/around 10 years old. Secondly, is copy protection. In fact on ANH it has the old style copy protection (where the brightness goes up and down, and generally makes the picture look messed up), and then ESB and ROTJ have the newer protection. Really i’m only just guessing, my capture card would record video from ANH but the picture is all messed up and ESB and ROTJ just won’t allow being recorded. Anyhoo, I can even think of restoring them, if I can’t even back them up. I’m a little uneasy about asking about how to get around the copy protection on these tapes, given the fact that it’s a legal gray area (or maybe it’s not and i just don’t know the laws), but suffice it to say, I have purchased these, and they’re getting old. Can anyone give me any advice or help?

Thanks,
