DTS audio preservation .... UPDATE 07 May 2015 ... Work In Progress
Time

I've now had the chance to sample the Matrix theatrical DTS and compare it to the BR audio. To me the two sound very similar with any perceived difference possibly being due to levels as hairy_hen mentioned.

That being said, there's something about knowing I'm listening to the original theatrical audio that gives me a warm fuzzy feeling and an outstanding job has been done syncing it to the BR so this will remain my preferred track for watching the movie. Many thanks Jetrell Fo for making this available. :)

The Thing (1982) [spoRv] *BD-25 RELEASED*

Sorry, link doesn't work... but I have once a Siberian Husky and, apart the fact that she had one blue eye and one brown, she was almost exactly as the laserdisc's dog - black and white - and not like HD'd dog - fawn and cream... about the eyes: I have seven thai cats (as you could see one in my avatar) and sometimes (it depend from the color of the sky) their eyes seems grey, aquamarine, or almost transparent... so, if I should decide which color timing is right based on the dog's color, I'll go with laserdisc!

Apologies for the non-working link. Here's the page I got it from: http://www.dvdbeaver.com/film/DVDCompare6/thething.htm

If you scroll to the bottom you'll see the shot of the dog staring out the window in which it appears that this particular dog definitely has brown eyes. I'd be interested to see the LD color of this shot to see if it stays consistent with the one above.

The first thing that struck me as looking wrong with the LD color timing is that the shot of the dog makes its eyes appear grey and colorless whereas you can see clearly in this shot that the dog's eyes are, in fact, brown as in the YouTube HD capture.

kk650's Miscellaneous Regraded Films (Released)

This means that he was upfront about what was done.  That is good.  This way people can make their own choice on whether they want to check it out or not.  That's good for everyone.

:)

Absolutely. It would be great if he had the time to do a scene-by-scene regrading to the original timing but I understand that would be an enormous undertaking and certainly not something I could even begin to attempt. It's great that kk650 is giving us these alternatives. The more choice, the better I say. :)

The Matrix bluray doesn't have a blanket green tint across the whole movie; in fact the 'real world' scenes have pretty much the same color timing as previous releases. Scenes set in the matrix itself always had a slight green tint, but the bluray ramps this up to 11 and makes some other questionable color changes to these scenes.

Here are some good examples of what I'm talking about: (EDIT: It should be noted that although the screens on this page all from DVD releases, the most recent DVD has the same color timing as the bluray)

The thing is kk650 freely admits that these regraded release aren't restoring the original theatrical color timing. They've just basically been white-balanced but in the case of BR releases that have a blanket tint added throughout the movie this may be preferable for some.

I have to say his HDTV-based release of AOTC does look so much better than the Blu.

I'd be really interested to know for sure whether this green tint was present in the theatrical release or not. The low-quality screener DVD that the studio put out for Oscar consideration definitely had no green tint to it; actually the colours were pretty poor with blues looking purple etc. but there definitely was no hint of green.

I dunno about everyone else but I'm gonna be paying serious attention to the colours when watching Desolation Of Smaug in the theatre.

Good to see someone is correcting 'botched' releases. He doesn't state what he's using to judge the correct colours though. Is there anything to suggest that the regraded Alien and YOLT are closer to the theatrical colours than the bluray or are they just timed to match older home video releases?

Glad to hear he's doing Aliens (I hope he also does the theatrical cut). I'd also love to see the 2D Jurassic Park bluray given the colour timing of the new 3D bluray.

Preserving DTS LaserDisc tracks, specifically Jurassic Park

As you can see, 3D BD has (obviously) more resolution, but the image is cropped on all four sides, and the colors are worst than the LD...

I think the colors on the 3D version are better although maybe a little too warm, but the LD timing there definitely looks too cold to me.

The major noticeable difference that struck me between the old timing and the new is the scene where the T-rex attacks the cars; in the 2D Bluray (and presumably older transfers) that scene is colored almost entirely in shades of blue whereas the 3D Bluray retains the same 'jungle' tones as the rest of the film. That being said, I couldn't possibly remember which one is closer to what I saw in 1993.

I agree the cropping is bad; this is why I'd love to see the old transfer retimed to something resembling the new colors.

Thanks for posting the pics. :)

People who've seen it in the theater seem to be reporting less noticeable DNR, but the bluray is terrible. See here:

The old transfer is over-sharpened but the smearing on that SLJ shot just isn't something I'd pay money for :(. I still prefer the new colors though.

Harmy's STAR WARS Despecialized Edition HD - V2.7 - MKV (Released)
Time

Like everyone else here I'm sure, I loved Star Wars as a kid; watched my taped-off-TV VHS recordings endlessly. Then later when DVD technology emerged I waited and waited for these movies to become available in the new digital format. Finally, when the DVD set was released I sat and watched and something just didn't feel the same. I couldn't put my finger on it at the time but somehow this just wasn't the Star Wars I knew (even without all the SE stuff). I figured at the time that I'd just gotten older and that was that.

But when I sat and watched this version, it all came back :). All the same excitement I had from before that kept me coming back again and again that had somehow been boosted and crushed and oversaturated out of those awful DVDs. This was MY Star Wars as I remembered it.

Thank you for this Harmy. A thousand times thank you. :)
