Okay, this whole Picasso thing is really ridiculous. Your analogy of adding a new shadow is something that would throw off the entire composition and balance of the piece. It's something that would be readily noticeable and change the entire context and overall effect of the picture plane. Changing five frames of light saber effects out of thousands more in a two hour movie is more akin to changing a single brushstroke, if it's comparable at all. Also, as much as I like Star Wars and think it's an important movie and piece of history, any comparison between a thirty year old motion picture with a plethora of original unaltered copies floating around in various formats and a one-of-a-kind piece of artwork from an established master is way off base.

In short: MeBeJedi and Zion aren't taking a palette knife to Guernica, they're making a light saber effect consistent between a span of a few dozen frames of film.

There is a great difference.

I think as far as the colors and starfield goes, he's restoring the color balance on the Tantive's red markings and starfields that were present in the laserdiscs but changed for the 2004 DVDs. But other things Mverta is doing (such as re-rotoscoping the lightsabers during the training remote sequence and erasing matte lines during the tractor beam sequence) would definately make his version a different "special edition."

So if I download MeBeJedi's or Zion's versions does that mean I can't celebrate my birthday anymore?

Or do I have to go around door to door peddling the glories of five frames of lightsaber fixes?

Can't we just all agree that MeBe and Zion and whoever else are putting the work into their versions so they can do whatever they see fit to those versions?

Can't we then also agree that if somone would want a purely unaltred laserdisc version then there are already a few straight LD transfers available?

I really don't see what the big deal is. It's not as though Zion or MeBe are running around destroying these other versions. Also, your comparison to works of art such as Picasso paintings is also out of proportion. Even if you disagree with what they're doing, MeBeJedi and Zion aren't "destroying" original one-of-a-kind versions, they're "destroying" prints of them. They haven't broken into the AFI vaults and burned the original Star Wars negatives. They aren't breaking into people's homes and smashing original trilogy laserdiscs. They're putting time and effort into making transfers for themselves, and then out of the kindness of their hearts, letting us have them for free.

So, seriously, I know I'm new here and have an inferior post count to you, but you should probably calm down and get some perspective on what you're so worked up about.

Or, you know...don't.

Zion, I had a problem with my Ti4600 a few months back. Not the same as yours, but my games would freeze for 10-15 second and then start up again for a few minutes until freezing again. Very annoying. Anyway, I fell back on the classic NES-fix of opening up my case and blowing the dust out of my video card's heat sink and that seemed to fix things up. You might want to pick up another case fan too, if overheating turns out to be the problem.

If not, pricewatch.com lists a number of cheaply priced replacements.

My whole view on this thing is that if the final product of MeBeJedi or Zion's transfer looks like the effects could have been created in 1977 under the BEST possible circumstances, then it's okay.

The huge changes like inserted CGI or new scenes and editing changes are what separates the original versions from the special editions, in my mind.

If the editing, narrative and general "retro" look remain intact, I'm fine with it.

And also, I applaud you, MeBeJedi, for crawling through this thing frame by frame and removing all the scratches and rot spots by hand. That's just crazy and shows enormous dedication and grants you the right to do anything you'd like to your version of the Trilogy.

Well here's all the changes I can find:

If there's any more than that, then they really ARE subtle.

Looking at all these screenshots lined up, it's really clear how much the over-all color of the scene jumps around. The first two are blueish, the second two are kinda pink and the last has a green hue. Looks like it'll be hell to try and balance everything out if you're gonna attempt it. You certainly have your work cut out for you, man!

I just frame-by-framed through the whole thing and I can't notice any differences between the top and the bottom images. The jumps in Luke, Obi-Wan and 3PO all seem the same, the color and consistency of the lightsaber look the same and you can still see the shadow of the saber stick on 3PO near the end....

Soooooo, what should we be looking for?

Unless you just put the same video on the top and the bottom and are trying to make us go crazy.

Yeah, I put everything in a video_ts folder but still no luck running off the IFOs

but, I can apparently just double click on the .vob files and play them like that. Have to go re-click when one runs out though. Oh well...

Odd behavior, but the quality of the rips is really great, so I can suffer through a slight annoyance .

I just downloaded the Farsight rip of RotJ but I can't seem to get it to work.

Does it need to be burned to play, or can you play it right off your hard drive?

I also have the other anamorphic LD rip of A New Hope and it runs fine in Power DVD right from the .ifo files, but no dice with the Farsight version of Jedi.

Anyone know what's up?
