Considering I've read all of them but the newest releases, I'd say Rogue Squadron, The Thrawn Trilogy, and the majority of the NJO are the best--the rest you could potentially live without.

Probably the time during which the movies themselves took place. Such as, how many weeks passed during ANH or how long did Luke actually spend on Dagobah with Yoda(four weeks or more?)

So, if those cruisers were so lightly manned, there are at least 44,000 people on the ground? Most likely less due to the absence of antibiotics by now, and the fact that Cloud Nine is no more? Do we know how many people were on Cloud Nine? I would think that 1000 or so people were manning the ships.
