Video Games - a general discussion thread

^ You may not need to!

Check Best Buy, if there is one in your area. They have the Greatest Hits for PS2 right now, 2 for $35 or $19/each.

That way you can get titles like God of War and Shadow of the Colossus on the cheap.

God of War is one of the games that people will be talking about 20 years from now...well, maybe moreso the publicity stunt Sony pulled for the sequel in Europe last week, lol.

Yeah, it's got everything you could want in a premiere action title. It's a major achievement.

Threepi-X - here's what I picked up when I finally got around to purchasing a PS2 a few weeks ago.

Most, if not all, of these games are highly rated and must-haves.

Games Still At Retail

Shadow of the Collosus - awesome game. Horse control sucks though.
Killzone - Best PS2 shooter.
God of War - You might have heard of this?
God of War II - Makes me want to eat innards from a decapitated goat.
Resident Evil IV - I have it for the GameCube, not PS2, but you should get it anyway.
Okami - Second Best art design ever
Metal Gear Solid 3 - Snake Eater (lol)

Games From Used Stores/eBay

Katamari Damacy - Cool gameplay, quirky Japanese humour and an infectious soundtrack.
Ico - Pioneered isolation and despair in gaming, worth the story alone.
Devil May Cry - Premiere PS2 action title, often imitated.
Metal Gear Solid 2 - Sons of Liberty - just look it up.

Any of these games are going to give you lots of entertainment - there's not a stinker on that list. If you're into Sports games, which I'm not, and of the Madden titles are top rated.

Darabount rips Lucas over Indy IV script
Time
^ Mm-hmm. Like I've said countless time, the Star Wars films are all about the SFX informing the story, whereas with most films the story informs the SFX.

Story does not equal SFX, which is something I'm afraid Lucas understands a lot less than someone like Spielberg. The reason Star Wars and Jaws (and Raiders to a lesser extent) are so good is that the filmmakers weren't comfortable, things were constantly going wrong and they were forced to improvise. Lucas was in a position of great influence and wealth when the Prequels were made, so there wasn't that voice in his head going, "I can't do this, it's going to cost too much," which is never a bad thing.

Proof of my theory? What does the majority prefer - Star Wars with Jabba or Star Wars sans Jabba?

What I'm getting to is that this is why all of this nonsense about Indiana Jones IV and the Potential of Suck is unfounded.

I know I'm not well liked around these parts, I can deal with it - just hear me out and consider what I'm about to say before blacklisting me again.

Ladies and gentlemen of the jury, I present my case on why Indiana Jones IV and the Prequels could not be more dissimilar.

1) Lucas is the bank and the story "author," and not in a position of putting his clever wit all over the script.
2) Spielberg is the Director, a man Lucas calls, "My Director," which means he will back off when it comes to major creative decisions.
3) The editing of the Prequels, by Ben Burtt and George Lucas sucked. Michael Kahn is editing Indiana Jones IV.
4) The cinematography, Kaminski, shot Saving Private Ryan and many other spectacular looking films. Just imagine that!
5) David Koepp wrote what matters - the script. The dialogue, the pacing, the character arcs...EVERYTHING that matters comes from him.
6) Shia "Son of Indy" LeBouef has been seen as controversial. Indy has a son? What? Now go and watch War of the Worlds and see what a touching Father and Son relationship Koepp crafted in the middle of all those SFX and explosions. The potential for a really touching story that matters is there. Honestly.

I have high optimistic hope for this film and I at least hope that some of my points are impressed upon one person. Thanks.

Before anyone busts a load all over Darabont, I hasten to remind them of his involvement with the following:

Elm Street 3
The Blob
The Fly II
Young Indiana Jones
Frankenstein

Sure, Shawshank and Green Mile were nice movies with great scripts, but by my count 2 great screenplays out of a mound of shit does make a great filmmaker.

I respect people's opinions that Indiana Jones IV will suck, you're certainly entitled, but Darabont hasn't exactly turned water into wine, right?

Given his involvement with the execrable Young Indiana Jones series it almost seems to me that he felt entitled to write a movie since he was in that "inner circle" and it sounds like sour grapes.

OK, but what I'm saying is that just because your tastes run toward something more cerebral, doesn't devalue this movie or any other summer "event" picture at that.

I agree - most summer films lack substance and are simply mindless entertainment. There have been a lot of great summer movies, and until I hear more I have no reason to doubt that Indy IV will be an entertaining 2 hours. What's wrong with that? What's wrong with being entertained? Have we become so high-brow and serious of a society that we can't remember how much fun it is to sit in a dark theatre in the air conditioning, with a tub of popcorn and turn off our far-too-busy brains for 2 hours?

It's harmless, man. Why not?

Raiders of the Lost Ark is a true classic, but Temple of Doom and Last Crusade are useless sequels that didn't need to be made, and 18 years later, Indy IV does not need to be made either. This is what is wrong with hollywood, there is nothing original anymore, it is sequel, sequel, sequel, with big budget effects to dazzle every teenage kid.

I rarely go to the movies anymore until November/December, cause that is the only time when the good movies are on the big screen, you know, the dramas, the ones with a good story, good directing, and good acting. Indy IV is just another summer movie that will have 2 hours of pointless action, no story, and the only reason people will see it is because we love the Harrison Ford character.

I won't eat crow, and again it has nothing to do with Lucas, I made this thread cause I am in shock that another director went against the golden rule in Hollywood, talk bad about your fellow colleagues, so there has to be something to this. Cassidy, you made a thread about not respecting SW fans opinions under 30, yet you say this movie will rock? There is no need for this movie, it is another pointless sequel of the other sequels that dominate the summer boxoffice, and you know who the target market is? Under 30 age group!

Also, I object to being maligned by your comment about not respecting the opinions of those under 30.

I am tired of being bashed around here, misquoted, misrepresented, and mistreated. Enough is enough.

On the day I made that thread, all I saw was pissing and moaning around here, and I've had it with negativity. If people have nothing better to do with their lives than sit of the internet and talk about how George Lucas fucked up their dreams, than they should just jump off a bridge and spare all of us.

You know, it's ironic that I get taken to task over something as innocent as "guys, lighten up." What's wrong with being positive? What's wrong with having an optimistic outlook on things?

Your assumption that Indy IV is going to suck because Lucas nixed Darabont's script is just another example of the way people jump to grand conclusions around here because they (and I'm NOT pointing a finger at you, I'm generalizing) take themselves too goddamned seriously to sit back and enjoy a movie that isn't going to alter the universe one way or the other.

If ANYONE here thinks they can do better than Lucas I can't wait to see your movie. Stop complaining and do better.

Co, three guys who are all more rich than any of them deserve enjoy making movies together.

They made three enjoyable films that, despite what you say, struck a chord with a generation and entertained the hell out of them.

They want to have one more kick at the can together and have a little fun? Who are we to say otherwise?

Can't wait for the crow eating around here...

Star Wars Insider - R.I.P.

Yeah...I cancelled my subscription when the catalogue had more pages than the articles.

Most of it was EU stuff I didn't care about, or talking about how many toilets a Star Destroyer had...enough was enough.

I saved a lot of money not buying Star Wars stuff for the last 3 or 4 years, Insider included. Inside what? Everything was old news by the time the magazined arrived anyway.

Lucas created the character of Indiana "Smith" Jones

Lucas created the story for 'Raiders, along with Kaufman and Spielberg.

Lucas created Temple of Doom and convinced Spielberg to direct it.

Lucas created the character of Henry Jones Sr. and introduced the concept of the father figure to Spielberg.

Fucking recognize. If Lucas said Darabonts script was shit, it was shit. Who carries more credibility? I don't why people seem to think Lucas is going to fuck up Indiana Jones, what? Because he fucked up the Prequels?

You guys honestly think this movie is going to be shit? I can't wait for next summer when you're all going to be eating crow, because I have the utmost trust in Spielberg, Ford and Lucas.

It's like everyone complaining about how Sallah is not going to be in this, despite the fact that it reportedly takes place in South America and San Francisco. So....Sallah is going to show up in the middle of the jungle and be like, "Hi Indy, Cairo sucked so I moved to Peru." Come on.

When Indiana Jones said "Trust me," I listened. Indiana Jones IV is going to rock, and you lot are too cynical to admit it.

Info: Your work is being sold
Time
Easier if you set up a "free" eBay or Sell.com auction every time one of these popped up, so it is directly underneath the sellers item.

Put something in the title like - "Howard the Duck HD2DVD Free!" and anyone who finds the sellers auction will find that.

Then, in the item description just put that you're willing to send the disc for free, just ask for postage which will offset any eBay listing fees.

It's so crazy it just might work.
