Is it me or are there alot of food products being mentioned

and on that note

Cherry Coke!

it was tested here (Ireland) for a couple of months, but ultimately didn't take off, I tried it once & was buying 1 bottle a day until it was taken off the shelves, when I was in the states back in 1999 I found that you could buy it absolutely EVERYWHERE so I spent every ¢ent I was given on the stuff,

The worst part is I recently found out that it is made 40 miles from where I live but there is an ingredient in it that prohibits sale in ireland so its all shipped over to the UK (could do with a smashing head against wall emoticon right about now!)

When I spent a summer in Ireland, my one thought was that the country would be perfect if it just had Cherry Coke.

Any food product made before they switched to high fructose corn syrup!

What I would give for a Coke circa 1979. "The Real Thing"!

 You can have it.

1- If you live anywhere with a sizeable Mexican population, go to a Mexican market and buy Mexican coke in a bottle. It's still made with cane sugar.

2- Wait until Passover. Buy the Kosher Coke with the yellow cap. It's a seasonal product made with cane sugar (I guess high fructose corn syrup isn't kosher enough or something.)

Darth Bane
Time

Just finished the Darth Bane trilogy of books. As EU go, they're a hoot, although I start skipping pages near the end.

One thing bugs me about the Rule of Two.

If I'm an evil Sith Lord, motivated by Greed, Hatred, Selfishness, and all that, and I'm awesome and really dig being a Sith Lord... why do I train an apprentice and instruct them to SOMEDAY KILL ME.

By definition I'm evil, greedy, full of hate, and selfish. How the hell does someone like that hold the ideal of the Sith Order's Rule of Two so much higher than self-preservation?

The idea that a 1000 years of this could happen without any Sith Lord saying "Nuts to this, I'm the Dark Lord of the Sith until I die comfortably of old age" is a bit hard to swallow.

That type of loyallty to an ideal from a Sith is like a really well run Organization of Anarchists, or the Biweekly Newletter for the Society that Hates Reading and Writing.

McRib - Do I need to explain this one?
Cherry Dr. Pepper - This is gone, right?

The McRib comes and goes, but I beleive Cherry Dr. Pepper is still available... at least in Southern California.

I miss Christmas Pepsi. They only made it for one year, and it was about the tastiest thing ever. Mmmmm... cinnamon, ginger, and Pepsi. So good.

A good while after it was discontinued (and never brought back, even seasonally) I found an Army Surplus store that had four 12 packs of it for sale. I wondered if I was gambling with my life, but I bought them and enjoyed them ever so much (with my cell phone and 911 handy just in case).

He made a classic work "Henry the Green Engine" in 1951.

But, in 1972, the story was attacked by the national press for containing the phrase "as black as niggers". To solve the problem, he changed the offending sentence to "as black as soot", which has been used in all subsequent editions of the book.

 1951?

That seems a little late in the day day to pass it off as just 'that's how folks talked back then.' Especially for a children's book.

I'm no expert, but I believe by the 50's polite society in the US was avoiding that term, at least in public and children's books.

Did that type of language, perhaps carry a different ammount of emotional weight in England?

Reduction of emotional depth and feeling of involvement, increase in silliness, reduction of sense of danger, plastic visual style.

Yeah, because Temple of Doom is just overflowing with emotional depth and lacks silliness like mine car chases, eating bugs, or musical numbers.

Iron Man 2
Time

I've always hated the implication that Lando is some kind of token.

The plot clearly required someone who can out-smooth Han.

Who in the blue hell is smoother than Billy D?

The answer is NO ONE.

If you want someone light years smoother than young Harrison Ford, Billy D. Williams is pretty much your only option.

"The Orphanage"

Well-made and entertaining, but it followed the by-now worn out plot of "Dead people point protagonist to decades-old injustice." 2 1/2 stars.

Yeah, but that movie was FUCKED UP in some totally new ways. I mean damn... sad and messed up. Just recalling it makes me uncomfortable.

"Count Dracula" with Christopher Lee directed by Jess Franco is probably the best in both regards. Dracula is genuinly frightening, but with a depth that isn't romantic but more historical. Lots of great language from the novel, and a tour de force performance from Lee.

The only thing stopping it from being the clear and undisputed best Dracula was the ridiculous overuse of the zoom lens. It's like a home movie in some spots.

That's just my opinion, and to be fair, there are two Dracula adaptaions I havent seen yet (Dernhelm Elliot and Jack Palance as the Count).

My point; I'm a huge fan of the film & the series.  I've been on board since the beginning.  However,  I have a grounded understanding of what it is - a modern take on old comic book\movie serial\pulp\bigger-than-life adventures. Also, I've not let my dislike of Lucas' handling of Star Wars cloud my judgment of an unrelated franchise that he doesn't even have total control over.

It's denial to ignore the way in which the 4th Indy movie shows distinct resemblences to the prequels and to ignore the obvious conclusion that the movie must have been influenced by the modern-day Lucas's prequels-style filmmaking attitude.

"Distinct resemblences to the prequals" in the use of CGI and other modern techniques, or resemblence in that you don't like either?

From what I've seen, I get the image of Speilberg and Ford working hard, and Lucas jumping up and down behind them going 'hey guys, listen to me... listen to me..." and they throw him a bone every now and then.

AVATAR and 3D in general....

Yeah but I Abrams actually talked about making the movie like Star wars and the dvd doc says the same thing. So it's something that was in the mind of those making the movie when they made it. They were consciously imitating Star Wars.

Which they did by imitating a ball to the wall adventure vibe, as opposed to the 'show tunes and moralizing' vibe of the previous several Trek films.

Wait a minute the dudes that pointed out star trek 2009 was a ripoff of star wars.  Those guys are geniuses.Lol.

it was?  it certainly didn't seem that way to me.

I think the "Star Trek 2009"/"Star Wars" comparison is based on the false assumption that Star Trek is 'thinking man's sci-fi,' so that when the movie is primarily a balls-to-the-wall adventure, it must be like Star Wars.

I don't understand why grown men are complaining about toys for children.

Yeah, I can agree to an extent, but lets be real. These are just solid pieces of plastic. I dunno how old you are, but I'm in my early 30's. I remember the good ol' days of 3-inch G.I. Joes with metal joints, meaningful Star Wars toys, metal Hot Wheels, roller wheels, and those cool Hot Wheels cities that you could fold like a briefcase. Remember Micro-Machines? With that fast talking guy who advertised for them? I love memory lane, it is so comfortable.

But, yeah, you're right, these are just for kids and that guy is acting a little goofy about them. However, in a way, I can relate. The toys of our day was so much cooler, just like our parents thought the toys of their day was better. Kind of scares me though what my grand-kids will be playing with!!

Im 29, and I remember plastic GI Joes held together with a rubberband that would snap, leaving your Joe a leprous pile of limbs and a torso.

I wish I could actually buy some cool Star Wars toys for my kid, but its hard to get cool ones because collectors pounce them up.
