Just read up on that. Jesus... it sounds like Waco Texas.

Group of people with politically unpopular views. Overwhelming lethal force in responce to minor problems.

Seriously!? Tear gas, water cannons and airborne bombs? Was this just some local politicians trying to live a Rambo complex or extreme hatred of Black people or what? What the blue hell can cause such a thing?

So, my friend is pretty adamant that the MIB 'unleashed' the Smoke Monster and that smokey then took the form of MIB (similar to how he has now taken the form of Locke).  I took it the other way, that he went into the Magic Yellow Light, and Mr. Manhattan style was transfigured into the smoke monster.  And that he was separated from his physical body.

I took it as Gold Light=Smoke Monster and MiB going in let it out, so that like Locke, MiB is dead and Smoke Monster took his shape.

My wife disagreed and was of the MiB=Smoke Monster camp, and that the light went away after it transmogrified MiB.

Smoke/Locke DID say he had a crazy mother, so that's evidence for the MiB=Smoke Monster theory.

This show has a pattern of peeling back a layer just to show you that what you want to know is one step further down.

i.e:

1. The other's! They must know what is going on!
2. No, they just live in old DHARMA buildings, they are the ones who knew what was going on!
3. Actually, DHARMA didn't know anything, it was the others all along!
4. Well, not the others, exactly... but Ben Linus, Richard Alpert, and Charles Widmore sure have it figured out!
 5. Wait, no... Richard only know what time traveling Locke tells him. He actually really doesn't know anything.
5.a. And Ben and Widmore are equally clueless.

6. Doesn't somebody know something?
7. Oh, Jacob... Yeah, he's the big boss. He'll know what's going on.
8. Or maybe that MIB.
9. No wait! It's the woman who raised Jacob. Jacob himself is totally clueless!
10.  The woman?  No, she was just selected to do this job sometime ago by someone else.

Tiny red text aside, I agree.

For an island in the South Pacific there sure seem to be a lot of white people on it.

But yeah, this episode answered questions that I'd forgotten about (Adam and Eve) and did not deal with questions I'm highly concerned with (Why is MiB leaving so bad, why does Jacob have a magical lighthouse, who built the statue).

With Jacob and MiB's origin, there's now the bigger question of how Jacob can manipulate destiny if he's just some normal dude.

Invasion Fleet!  Ha! That was the Aggressive Negotiations Task Force.  (who's motto is: "Sure we might carry guns, but we don't shoot them when people are watching... btw please step over... here. no a little bit farther, yeah just behind that.... perfect.")

But yeah was upping the thread to see if a new player wanted to get involved.

I'll give it another day then I guess. COME ON GUYS!! You know you've seen it!

I saw the new Sherlock Holmes movie.   I didn't like it that much.    It just didn't seem like the Holmes I know and love from the books.   Well, atleast it was better than that horrible USA movie a few years ago that tried to depict Holmes as a ladies man.   That was so bad, I had to stop watching it.  Sadly, IMHO, no one has ever done truly accurate version of Holmes.  The early Jeremy Brett years were about the closest anyone got, they were still a bit off(imho).

So much of what you and I think of as Sherlock Holmes is not actually in the novels and short stories.  The deerstalker, etc. are additions to the character that Sir Arthur had nothing to do with... and I think we, as modern readers, have a hard time forgetting all of those things when we sit down to read the original books... so we sort of think they're always in there.

i.e. The book might say, "Holmes and Watson walk down the street."  And in our minds eye, we see the classicly dressed Holmes walking down that street.  Or it might say, "Holmes removed his hat."  Sir Arthur might have meant a top-hat, or a bowler, or whatever his minds eye would have seen... but in our mind it is only the deerstalker- despite the fact that that was never his intention...

But on the other hand... I didn't really care for it myself.  I was looking forward to it, but it simply failed to engage me.  My wife asked, "What didn't you like about it?" and I couldn't really come up with anything in particular.  It was an enjoyable way to pass a couple hours, but I didn't rush out and buy a T-shirt.  It left me more "neutral" than anything.  I might have enjoyed it more had it been an original IP as opposed to claiming it was Sherlock Holmes.

My wife later quoted me as "having hated it."  Ah, well...

My favourite "Sherlock Holmes" movie is Zero Effect.  Which I saw 3 or 4 times before I realized it was a Holmes movie.

As a Holmsian myself, I dug that this film took a somewhat extreme take on whats actually in the book... Holme's manic-depressive nature, his codependence on Watson, Watson's gambling and what not. I dug the conspiracy/mystery and even the vaguely steam-punk flavor.

Two issues bugged me.

  • The boxing. I actually LIKED a lot how it showed Holmes visuallize a fight before it happened. But the underground pit-fighting seemed a little forced.
  • How do you runn off from the sewers under parliment and end up on the incomplete top of Tower Bridge? Seriously.

I totally loved Zero Effect too. It's a spiritual brother to the new Sherlock Holmes definityl.

Yeah that's probably my test taking failure, sometime you start reading into the questions, things which aren't there.  or I just confused Naboo with Theed or whatever that plain is where the big fight went down.

From the Neimodian point of view this action was part of the blockade, and thus not an invasion.  Just because Sio Bibble say's that "communication disruption(s) can mean only one thing" his conclusion of Invasion just doesn't hold water.  It could have been a solar flare!

Well, once the Nemoidians stopped blockading, and started invading with their invasion fleet, I presume they thought of it as an invasion. No doubt in a GFFA their communications are protected from solar flares. :)

Regardless, I guess no one else is playing, so I'll start scoring this.

So… here’re the questions.  You are one of three of the last men/women on Earth.

1. What two companions would you choose, assuming you could, to be stuck with?

2. What two companions would fate stick you with, assuming you couldn't choose.

3. If you went to bed tonight and woke up tomorrow to find yourself in this condition… what would you do?

 1. My wife and son.

2. Triple H and Eva Mendez

3. Burn the world.

Most Egregious Sci-Fi "Science"
Time

I'm no stickler for hard sci-fi, excepting that I enjoy poking holes in the belief that Star Trek is good science to Trekkies. I don't care about explosions in space or the speed of light.

But even with my casual concern for science, sometimes it just jumps off the screen and slaps me with innacuracies that I can't just willingly suspend disbelief for, either because

  • It's so completely wrongheaded
  • The film draws so much attention to it.

The worst I can think of is the 1997 "Godzilla."

Heat seaking missiles cant hit Godzilla because it's "cold blooded." Which is SO TOTALLY not what coldblooded means.

Also, Matthew Broderick's character says that "Godzilla is male, but he lays eggs" which just confused the hell out of me.

What else are the worse of the worst of sci-fi science?

My brother and I always say that Kurt Russel, Quaid, and Ford are bascially the same person.

I was thinking more about this and decided I don't think I could see Quaid or Russel play Han Solo...  Maybe his cousins Rico & Franz Solo or something... but not Han himself.

Doesnt an have an evil brother with a beard in some of the EU books? Sam Solo or something?

Act Breaks?
Time

I dont look for exactly where they break (that's usually debatable) but for discussion sake it's usually not hard to identify certain actions as in the first act (set up) second act (rising action) and third act (climax and resoltion).

In college I took my share of film classes, and there was this one dude, my age (early 20s in the late 90s) who always referred to "reels." He was not a projectionist or anything, but he insisted on referreing to parts of movies (that we always saw on DVD or Laserdisc) as taking part in this "reel" or that "reel.'

I hated that guy.

I really hate the FSM. It's a mildly clever little meme thing that it's enthusiasts seem to think is the highest form of both humor and intellectual debate about the nature of belief.

It's like if "All Your Base Are Belong To Us" never went away, and people started citing it in college classrooms while discussing economics.

Girls/wives who like Star Wars
Time

I college I also dated a girl who had never ever seen any "Star Wars" movies.

Watching them with her was like seeing it for the first time. When she asked "Who does Leia end up with, Han or Luke?" I almost cried with joy.

Looking back, that's the only worthwhile thing I got out of that relationship, and we broke up before I could subject her to AOTC in theaters, which really she deserved. (bitch)

But then I grew up with the 1982 CED/Videodisc release recorded to a VHS in LP mode. Where's my release?! ;-)

There have been so many damn versions, here's what I'd like to see.

  • The 2010 SE Superhyperhybidmegacut. Lucas's latest madness.
  • A fully-restored 1977 theatrical edition... ideally with an option of either of the original two sound-mixes.

If those were available... the "best" of Lucas's modern cutting edge interpretation and also the actual film that was nomitated for Best Picture, I'd be satisfied, and Lucasfilm would have another big chunk of my money.
