"I just want to let you folks know the newest developments
as of today....
One of the magazines I have been talking to has actually
contacted LucasFilm.
It has been absolutely confirmed that these are going to be
the original non-anamorphic transfers used for the 1993 laserdisc
release.
I wanted to post this for anyone out there that is still posting
on other forums that none of the information we have been reporting
to all of you is valid.
There has been a further statement made from LucasFilm as
to the reasons for what they are doing, but out of fairness to
the upcoming article that will be written, I am not going to talk
about this right now. In a few days there will be a story posted
and linked here that all of you are welcome to read. It will explain
the situation in more detail.
In the meantime, I urge all of you to continue mailing, emailing
and phoning your concerns to LucasFilm. Apparantly they are
willing to talk to fans and perhaps some of you may be able to
post a few comments that I am unable to discuss at this time."

Edit: I thought this quote was applicable. I'm not sure if Gandhi actually said it, or if it was just from the movie, but it's a good one:
They may torture my body, break my bones, even kill me, then they will have my dead body. NOT MY OBEDIENCE!
While we're quoting Gandhi, how about this one listed in his "Seven Deadly Sins":
"Commerce without morality"

Man, Jay is spot on here. We need to stick to our principles. I'd rather go down fighting than surrender. The noise we're making is being noticed and I wouldn't be at all surprised to see this story break in the mainstream media this week. Weakening now is NOT going to help at all! So, if you haven't already, write, fax, phone and email. Especially write, business types see one hard copy letter to be equal to 100 emails or more. I know I've never hand written a letter in the internet age until now . And why? Because I am REALLY angry.
I mean, come on, when things were looking bad for the Rebelion did they say "Ah, let's just quit and join the Empire, it'll be easier"? Of course not. Now I know that's a pretty nerdy analogy but hey, it's appropriate
Supporting this release will only prove to Lucas that he has us by the balls and that he can continue to release crap product, without any investment or effort, and get away with it. And continue to stick it to his most loyal fanbase. We may end up losing this battle but if we remain united and vocal we can win the war.
Be cool,
The Dean

"UPDATE
I have asked someone in this forum who is highly respected
by the membership to start a new thread on this subject.
It will be posted late this afternoon and all of you will have
the opportunity to post your thoughts to the folks at LucasFilm
who are now reading this forum.
You will be politely warned to keep your comments civil and
not to attack the opinions of other members."
Re: the bolded part above: If this is indeed true, and I wouldn't think the owner would make this up, we should all get over there and make our voices heard. "The folks at LucasFilm" must be reading the forum posts for a reason.
This is the abovementioned new thread here

If we hadn't bought tickets (and we bought a LOT of tickets) back in '77, Star Wars would have died and there would be one forgotten film not six movies in a franchise. So your "You bought a ticket and watched it. That's it." comment doesn't hold any water. Lucas would be NOTHING today without the fans that he now sticks his middle finger at.

Quote from Jay over at AVS: "Supposedly, Lucas is gauging public response to the potential sub-par quality of the OOT and will only give it a "proper" release if the backlash is too much to ignore."
So PLEASE write and be firm but polite.

We are totally getting screwed with the list price up here, considering our dollar is at $0.90 now, but I was just checking the Amazon.ca website and they have Episode III listed at the same SRP and selling for 32.99. And Future Shop is selling it for 35.99. But when Episode III first came out FS sold it for 19.99 on the first day. So I imagine they'll do the same with these and we can grab the trilogy for 60.00! Then they go out of those crummy Photoshop packages and into my own cases.

I just made some modifications to the artwork I had previously done for my LD versions; original movie poster art all personally scanned (no crappy low res JPEGs) including a REVENGE of The Jedi cover! And alternate poster art for the inserts. I just hope the discs themselves don't have crummy looking art printed on them.

"Having succumbed to outcries from the public, Lucasfilm (a corporation, not an individual person) have decided to make the original, unaltered trilogy available on DVD. My guess is that they will be sub-par because all my prior research on the topic lead me to believe there was no way to properly remaster the original trilogy because the raw film negative & elements no longer existed as they were. After the Special Editions, the old negative was beyond repair and they had to rely on the new negative only. This is a direct quote from Rick McCallum. How they were able to either restore, or maybe they haven't, and it's just an el cheapo transfer from old masters, regardless - what the people wanted, they are getting. Sadly, I think it's more sentimental than realistic to watch the unaltered versions. I have them, and I have seen them since seeing the various releases."
Any comments?

It came to me when I thought about how much more noticeable the garbage mattes around the TIE fighters were on DVD then they'd ever been before. What if the whole reason they're releasing them side by side is to "restore" the picture on the originals so much that the matte lines and garbage mattes stick out like sore thumbs, hundreds of times more than they ever were originally. I stand by wanting them there, as opposed to them being digitally cleared up, but they were hardly ever noticeable to me. But what if they purposely make them stand out so much with DVD technology that you can't help but think, "Wow. Look at the inferior technology." I mean, that's exactly what they want us to think. This is just a little conspiracy theory on my part, but you never know. Just something to throw out there.

Well I don't know if we need to worry about that. If I recall correctly you can see some of the mattes on the 2001: A Space Odyssey DVD and they're not disctracting or overwhelming and that disc looks great, especially for a movie from 1968. So take a deep breath everyone, my guess is that everything will be alright. After all if GL makes this a spite release just to make a point and pisses all the fans off, even he must realise that the world would surely end. And then he wouldn't be able to re-release the discs again next year
Cheers!

- Star Wars Original Trilogy had 'it', but 'it' is hard to explain.

I know exactly what "it" feels like but it really is hard to spell "it" out on a keyboard. It's like trying to explain the concept of love (not that I'm comparing the two feelings), you can explain the symptoms but not really what is causing them. I think that's what makes "it" so damn special.
I am one of the many that saw all three films in their original incarnations in the theatres from '77 - '83. I was 9 years old in May of '77 when I lined up with my friend and my mom to see Star Wars at the Fairview Mall cinema in Toronto. And I was never the same since! It honestly feels pretty goofy to be so attached to these films and so passionate about them at the age of 38, but I am It was such an amazing feeling to be part of the whole phenomenon; to feel such an incredible high even on subsequent viewings (I can't remember how many times I saw SW in that first year -- it ran for an entire year in that very same cinema!). Anyway, I am so pumped about getting the ORIGINAL versions on DVD (God please let these be quality discs!). I know I can't relive the euphoria of that first year but that's okay, it still reminds of one of the best years of my life and that's GREAT! And these movies are still great even without the nostalgia factor. I don't even have the DVDs yet (September 12th seems like an eternity away) and the whole idea is just so "cool".
I didn't feel that resurgance of emotion in '97 or when the prequels came out (especially when the prequels came out). The OOT did what it did the way it was, and GL can do all he wants to try and make all his films fit together but for an old fart like me there are only three movies and I just do my best to deny the existence of all the others
Cheers!

I pretty much agree with that but I also figured that five minutes of trailers wouldn't really make a difference, at least none that you'd actually notice, correct me if I'm wrong here.
I also don't see how a few trailers would turn the discs into "gimmicky super special unrated extended collectors editions". But either way I'll be very happy to have the discs and certainly appreciate all the work and effort the X0 team has put into this venture.

Any chance that some restored original trailers could be added to these discs? This would be great for those of us (me anyway) that don't want to bother with a 'supplemental disc' full of boring interviews and Max Rebo videos.
Thanks.
