It didn’t feel like a cliffhanger to me. It felt like the resolution to the storyline that began with “Luke Skywalker has vanished”.

I agree with this. I have a feeling they debated over it, but, ultimately, if you start your film with the words “Luke Skywalker is missing,” he better be found at the end of the film.

By deleting the journey of Luke’s first lightsaber, the through-line of the film became Luke Skywalker himself. And, to not solve it would damage the film as a whole.

Can someone tell me where to find the Russian Vader scream? I’m interested in adding my two cents to the question about it.

Here’s another mockup from CommanderBen, this time using Russian audio track. Again, ignore audio and video weirdness; the yelling is the only thing in question.

Also, just in case it comes up, here’s the Japanese scream, which seems to now be off the table. (I personally like it.)

Thanks a bunch Aluminum Falcon, You got right to what I needed.

No problem. Always glad to help.

But on my Pioneer Kuro Plasma, Respecialized has significantly better
picture quality.

I’m actually surprised about this. Respecialized and Despecialized are both taken from the same color correction. Non-97 footage should theoretically look identical.

You’re viewing the latest version of Despecialized (v2.5), I trust? Because previous iterations would have poorer quality than Respecialized.

Between L8wrtr and Hal9000, does one of them make for better picture quality?
(I’ll probably try all 3 from each of them)

HAL 9000 wins technically, hands-down, I have to say. He even went so far as to improve the quality of TPM from the commercial BD by adding a layer of fake grain. L8wrtr’s, which predate HAL’s by two years, look a touch too bright with less detail/grain retention.

FWIW, Q2’s trilogy, the full BD-25 versions, look as good or slightly lower quality than HAL’s.

And allow me to ask for best 2 selections for episode V + VI.

I’d recommend Harmy’s Despecialized 2.0 for both Episode V and VI. The latter release is not available quite yet, but there’s a workprint if you want something to burn soon.

Also available are teamnegativeone’s 35mm scans of Star Wars (cleaned) and The Empire Strikes Back (as-is). These releases are wonderfully filmic and full of detail, without the boosted colors and the ugly EE/frozen grain of the Lowry transfer. That said, these are from release prints (4th gen?) and consequently much more grainy.

For Return of the Jedi, there’s an HD fan edit based off of Harmy’s DE 2.0 workprint, entitled Revenge of the Jedi, which is pending approval on fanedit.org. I have yet to see the full thing, but there is a noticeable quality loss from Harmy’s original.

Info Wanted: Which Fan Edits are considered the Best ?

When it comes to prequel fan edits, I go:

HAL 9000’s Episode I: Cloak of Deception
L8wrtr’s Episode II: The Republic Divided
HAL 9000’s Episode III: Labyrinth of Evil

Combined they form my personal prequel trilogy, though your mileage may vary depending on personal preference.

If, for example, you don’t mind Yoda fighting Palpatine with a lightsaber, then you may be more drawn to L8wrtr’s Episode III: Dawn of the Empire. Likewise, if you absolutely loathe Jar-Jar and want as little of him as possible, then you could go with L8wrtr’s Episode I: Shadow of the Sith.

I’d try the work of multiple editors and see what works with you personally. Q2’s prequel trilogy is some people’s sworn-by go-to.

Later, you could try “one-offs,” where an editor chooses to edit only one of the prequels and not all of them. Trooperman’s Shroud of the Dark Side, though a work print, is very detailed in its intricacy.

The Force Awakens : Fan Edit Ideas
Time

I eagerly anticipate the plethora of Force Awakens fan edits to be released in the coming years, not necessary to supplant the excellent original as much as provide alternate takes. Personally, my biggest gripe was the somewhat unclear political situation, but I’m sure fan editors will find other things to “fix.”

I’m removing the interrogation scene between Rey and Kylo. Vader never interrogated Luke, so it makes it more powerful that Rey’s ultimate confrontation with Kylo is a battle.

In this case, would Rey still get captured by Ren? Or would she still get captured but simply not get interrogated? I only ask because in the former case, Finn’s motivations for going to Starkiller Base would have to be reworked.

Personally, I loved the interrogation scene- great character work and a clever use of diverted expectations. 😃

The sound was absolutely superb. I heard things that were buried in the mix when I saw it last month. The sunken TIE fighter exploding made me jump even when I knew it was coming.

Forgot to say. The sound was indeed a big improvement over the IMAX 3D projection in San Francisco’s Metreon. The dialogue was horribly drowned out there but crystal clear in San Jose. Got a lot more subtle jokes when I saw the 70mm.

You know he did the other three Mad Max movies, right?

I know. Though, you don’t often see a director return to a genre he did when he was younger and have it be a runaway success critically and commercially. coughKingdom of the Crystal Skullcough

The Force Awakens in 70mm IMAX
Time

I saw the Force Awakens in San Jose twice.

First time I was sitting near the bottom of the dome and had to literally lie down on the base of my seat to see the screen. The curvature made it a nightmare to read the crawl. (Luckily, it was not my first time watching the movie). The second time I arrived an hour early and got great seats. Really, it improved the experience tenfold.

Overall, the film experience as one I was glad to have. Nothing at all like the prints of yesteryear, this modern day 70mm print only resulted in the slightest of increased color and contrast. Honestly, I wouldn’t travel the world to go see a print, as it looks very similar to the digital. That said, the fine grain, I found, improved the image, helping guise the effects and making Snoke and Maz Kanata blend in more with everyone else. Aesthetically, it gave it a tad more visual grit lacking in the digital projection I saw at the Metreon, San Francisco. It was also fun to hear the projector whir, and film dirt pop up every now and then.

Interestingly enough, a year ago, I saw a gloriously run-down 35mm print of that other space fantasy- Guardians of the Galaxy, which looked RADICALLY different than the digital release; the analog look made it seem a lot like a 1980s movie. But, that is for another thread…

I’m currently watching ROTJ (and loving it) and I genuinely think eliminating the lazy second Death Star is possible. Not by awkwardly cutting it out of frame, but by re-purposing it. Done in a few easy(ish) steps.

You might want to check out Spence’s Edit of Return of the Jedi. Not handled exactly like you would, but it does away with the Death Star rather nicely, explaining that the Emperor is instead on a Star Destroyer.

The Godfather Saga - HD Restoration (Released)

And there shouldn’t be any issues. It’s a straight recording. ANd, if this were a typical release, I’d say “let’s do two different releases.” However, this is going to be (probably) around 50 gigs. It’s not something that I feel like uploading twice, nor do I think people are going to download it twice.

For clarification, I believe the suggestion was to upload the captured video file now (50 GB or so) and then upload the synced LD PCM (2 GB maybe?) by itself when it’s done. Of course, if you’re planning a full BD with menus for this release, it would make it more difficult for people downloading to later remux with the PCM.

For what it’s worth, I don’t think the LD PCM is a priority. The 5.1 track that HBO had sounded good enough to me, and, furthermore, V1 of this release, using the AMC broadcast, also did not feel teh need to include the LD PCM.

Caught up on a lot of 2015 films the past week.

Black Mass- 4/10- Poor direction and plotting makes a waste of a great cast in this disjointed mess of a movie.

Carol-9/10- A touching, classic love story with fantastic direction

The Hateful Eight- 9.5/10- Tarantino firing on all cylinders to give his most complex, mature work in years.

Legend- 6/10- An unfortunately formulaic take on the gangster movie, only saved by Tom Hardy’s dual performance.

Mad Max: Fury Road- 9.5/10- The basic chase, done with flair and memorability. An unexpected turn from the director of Babe: Pig in the City.

The Revenant- 3/10- A frankly pointless exercise in grit and gore with thinly-fleshed characters, which seeks to find meaning but never hits the mark. After Birdman, it is another disappointing work from the director of Babel.

Spotlight- 9/10- A wonderfully underplayed ensemble piece, which never errs on the side of boredom.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens- 9.5/10- A wonderful romp back into that galaxy far, far away.

James Bond 007 Thread
Time

I agree with those above that the disdain for The World is Not Enough is unwarranted. Brosnan was top form, and Robert Carlyle was terrifying!

I will say that Spectre was and is a massive disappointment to me. A mish-mash of different eras of Bond, I’d place it among the lowest five of the franchise.

For what it’s worth, this is my list.

From Russia with Love
Casino Royale
The Living Daylights
On Her Majesty’s Secret Service
Dr. No
Goldeneye
Skyfall
Goldfinger
Live and Let Die
Licence to Kill
The World is Not Enough
Thunderball
Moonraker
You Only Live Twice
Die Another Day
For Your Eyes Only
Quantum of Solace
Tomorrow Never Dies
Diamonds are Forever
Spectre
A View to a Kill
The Spy who Loved Me
The Man with the Golden Gun
Octopussy

Not a big Roger Moore man myself.

Amadeus - Laserdisc+DVD Audio Tracks for 4K (formerly Theatrical Cut Restoration)

Thank you for the share!

Not sure if this has been discussed before, but, when muxing the MKV with TSMuxer, I found, to create a functional BD ISO, I needed to set, under “General track options,” “Do not change SEI and VUI data” rather than the default “Insert SEI and VUI data if absent.”

Has anyone else trying to burn had this experience?

I encountered a similar instance with HAL 9000’s fan edits of the Star Wars prequel; it’s apparently something to do with how the original MKV is encoded.

Frankenstein (1931) Audio Preservation (Released)

Keep in mind though that the DiscoVision print would have the censored cut of the film that removes other scenes, notably when the Monster throws the little girl in the water. These scenes weren’t restored until 1986.

Ah! That’s very true. In all honesty, the restored 1987 LD should have better audio than the Discovision.

But, of course, by that same logic, the restored Blu-Ray should have the best audio of all! In the scenario that the audio of the Discovision is at all useful, the missing audio could be patched with another source, even the VHS audio, which, now having listened to your videos, sounds surprisingly good!

Wow, that sounds like the perfect set up for a series of film or mini series. It will be interesting to see where they go from there. Still that seems more like a good season ending cliffhanger then a series final, so yeah I guess that may have something to do with why I don’t remember it.

Well here is hoping we get some answers, I can’t wait. Why does the 24th have to be so far away???! 😃

Well, actually the second movie, I Want to Believe, already followed up on that cliffhanger. Unfortunately, it wasn’t all that exciting.

Last we saw them, Mulder and Scully were living together, with Scully now practicing medicine at some Christian hospital as a profession. The “in hiding/on the run” aspect, alluded to by the finale, isn’t explored much in the movie, as, less than 30 minutes in, the FBI already pardons Mulder for any previous alleged wrongdoing. Consequently, the movie sees Mulder and Scully working once again within the FBI, albeit as consultants and not full-blown agents.

EDIT: Forgot to say, in an end credits sequence, we see Mulder and Scully vacationing together in some sunny tropic place. Bahamas?

Frankenstein (1931) Audio Preservation (Released)
Time

Count me in as someone very interested in the restoration of this audio.

Though the 1987 LD seems to be the most likely primary source to cull audio, it may be worthwhile to see how the audio is, on the original DiscoVision releases. Apparently, both Frankenstein and Bride were transferred from original nitrate prints; if anything, the video should make for an interesting preservation.

They’re available on eBay now:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Frankenstein-Discovision-Laserdisc-Movie-1931-Used-/331678656927?hash=item4d3996a99f:g:tVMAAOSw~bFWGfOF

I would definitely vote to reinstate the omitted dialogue, down the line. No reason I can see to leave the line censored.

edit: I will of course just wait until the iso version, mainly because they will tweak a few things. But I’m just curious.

Just put the MKV file into TSMuxer, with no manual frame rate adjustment. The BD-R from the resulting ISO worked fine.
