Harmy's THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK Despecialized Edition HD - V2.0 - MKV & AVCHD (Released)
Time

Hello Harmy,

Unfortunately I wasn't able to watch the whole thing but, as I was skimming, I noticed a few things. However, these may be creative decisions and regardless of what you do with them this is my new favorite version of ESB.

- While not as blue as in the 2004 SE, you kept some blue in Hoth. It was decidedly more blue than the whiter GOUT. However, with the recent discovery of the vintage bootleg, this coloring you've put may in fact be more accurate than the GOUT.

- When they first land at the platform in Cloud City, the matte you've placed to hide the addition of CGI is just a tad bit too blue in my opinion; although, it looks better than the test clip you posted a bit ago. A little pink may do it good.

- Later, as they are leaving the platform with Lando, the matte in the back looks a bit too desaturated. A nice little saturation boost might be nice.

- On the whole, the movie looked darker than the GOUT; although, the GOUT looks faded to my eyes so I'm fine with this. Everything looked more realistic.

- During the asteroid chase, there seemed to be a lack of pinkness that was present in the GOUT (as shown in the little window). The color seemed a lot more like the 2004 edition. A once colored explosion looks almost white at 39:54.

When I get the chance, I'll watch the whole thing. Don't get me wrong, Harmy, this is a most excellent release. If you thought Adywan's was stunning, this is superb. As for the coloring, I don't mind either way. You do what you think is right.

So in your guys opinions, are the commentary files not worth it, I did notice on the Gonzo commentary it went a long time between comments, kind of a boring commentary, thoughts?

I think the more audio tracks the merrier especially since you're not limited to the room of a DVD-9. I got a chance to listen to the OCPMovie Classic Edition commentary. It's got some nice interviews, mostly anecdotes about the film's production. Most of us probably know most of the information in it but overall it's still informative. Anyway, DJ, make your own judgments about it. I uploaded it at:

lol at "BluGOUT."

Note that I think it's a great title, it just struck me as funny.

It is pretty funny, truth be told, I actually HATE the term GOUT, just sounds stupid to me, like a disease or something, Ricardo and I make fun of this term all the time, but that is what you guys here use, so I guess I will have to as well.

Hey DJ, if you hate GOUT, then why not call it BUTT (Blu Unaltered Theatrical Trilogy)? :-)

In any case, this looks excellent. The clips are coming along nicely for something sourced from the GOUT.

So I was skimming through this a bit yesterday, and maybe it's been a while since I last watched the SE, but I don't remember there being CGI in the Rancor scene. Why was this replaced?

I believe the original version has very visible matte lines that Harmy wants to restore; although, I could be wrong. I think the 2004 SE made them less visible.

I agree with you in many respects, Funky Days. I have the Evil Dead Blu-Ray and enjoy it immensely. It makes all other transfers look awful despite its graininess. The film grain gives it character, and it just enhances the ED experience. I now watch it more than ever. Some people talked about it having DVNR, but my eyes couldn't detect it. It's so vastly superior to the ED II transfer which is completely wax-works. Oh  and gits and shiggles LOL.

As for this Blu-Ray project, I remain neutral. The grain gives it mood and character. The grainy desert... Anyway, I don't mind grain all that much. If you choose to wipe out the grain, I'll be fine with that too. If the samples are any indication, I have no problem with the amount of grain-reducer you use.

The ANH:SE Redux Ideas thread (Radical Ideas Welcome).
Time

This is just a random radical idea about ANH but after seeing Adywan's great work in his Revisited Emperor scene, it seems possible. Perhaps we could make a scene where the emperor appears via hologram to Vader, thus strengthening the master/apprentice bond. Maybe in the scene where the officer informs Tarkin and Vader that Dantooine is deserted, a hologram message from the emperor could pop up from that little round, black center piece of the table that doesn't really seem to do anything. Maybe new dialogue could establish Tarkin's importance so he has some excuse to boss Vader around.

Noise yes, grain no (my opinion). These shots you mentioned are "supposed" to be grainy by their nature, that's how they were in the original film, too.

Huh a lot of scenes look far grainier than I expected, especially the desert. I never knew that Star Wars was supposed to look that grainy. They must have really DVNR-ed it for the 2004 release. As for making the Blu-Ray, this grainy... I'm indifferent. I thought the samples were very nice minus some issues so that may be the road Dark Jedi wants to take.

Out of curiosity, where did you get those 70mm shots from? Are they from the Senator Theater showing or an altogether different one?
