STAR WARS: EPISODE VII: The Shadow Revealed (FAN EDIT BY THAT_OT_RULER) NEW PREVIEW CLIPS
Time

The music is present in every channel. That’s the tricky part. However, you can go through each channel and pick out individual sound effects, cause some channel’s music is less audible than others. Also, some primary sound effects are in the main channel too. It’s honestly a big jumbled mess. It sounds good, but the organizing is awful. As for the Rey and Kylo, I’m going to have to mainly use my own sound effects. Same with the resistance X-wings fighting on Maz’s castle.

I must be the only person who thinks Rey’s theme is almost as bad as Rey’s character…

Probably not because it’s 2016 and there’s always someone who hates something but it would be a really obscure opinion.

Honestly, my dad and I’s greatest complaint about the movie was Rey’s character. If she was written better, I would’ve given the movie a much higher rating.

Very excited for the edit! I commend you for taking up the task of removing the music from the 7.1 channels.

I must verify though, are you for sure removing any of these:

-Rey’s Theme
-Jedi Steps/Force Theme at end
-Kylo Rens Theme

I find these three are the most redeeming pieces of the soundtrack. Rey’s theme is a unique and beautiful composition. Same for Jedi Steps, mainly because it ends the film so well. And Kylo Rens theme also gives him a personal and recognizable theme. Just curious and am fine and supportive of whatever you choose to do. Thanks again !

There’s no really convincing him. Plus this edit is clearly for people who didn’t like the film so I would bother trying to sway him on anything. At least he’s keeping the interrogation scene

Lol, yeah, the movie had a lot of positives to it, and I’m just trying to maximize my enjoyment of it. I might make two edits where one is not as severe of an edit.

Sorry I haven’t been posting daily updates everyone. College is really a bitch. I am slowly working on making new preview clips and creating a new audio mix for the movie. It’s a slow, manual process, going through all the audio channels and picking out the sound effects. Thank you all for the support!

I don’t like color correction in general. With a few exceptions, I think the need for it is vastly overstated.

I can understand wanting to keep the film to be realistic, rather than styalized. I’ll see what I can cook up. Maybe a light correction, but not anything too extreme. To be honest, I think I do have a bias towards the 2.5 Despecialized version (That is not correct), and the 2014 The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly color correction. Something about the yellow I like. Regardless, I’m going to put together something you’ll like.

STAR WARS: EPISODE VII: The Shadow Revealed (FAN EDIT BY THAT_OT_RULER) NEW PREVIEW CLIPS
Time

I posted my thoughts for a fan edit months ago, but with the Blu-ray just coming out, I’d like to share my ideas and what I will definitely be doing in the fan edit.

Working title: The Shadow Revealed
Fan Edit by That_OT_Ruler

*MAJOR CHANGES
-Color correction (Yellow-ish color tint, examples below)
—Soundtrack is completely removed and replaced with music from the previous films (Hopefully)
-Some scenes will have a complete sound overhaul (New sound mix with TIE fighters effects, etc.)
-Removal of the Rathtar squid sequence (The whole thing is gone)
-Removal of almost all fanservice and callback moments, except for shit like Rey’s helmet and the AT-AT
-Finn is not nearly as cringeworthy around Rey (Removal of stupid lines like, “Well this is what we look like.”) He’s more serious, but he has heart.
-Put back in shots that were cut from the trailers
-Finn sucks even more with using a lightsaber

*MINOR CHANGES
-20th Century Fox logo and theme is implemented
-Custom title crawl
-Removal of Poe’s line, “You talk first, I talk first?”
-Removal of Poe’s line, “You need a pilot?”
-Removal of Finn’s yelling, “DID YOU SEE THAT?!”
-Removal of extra explosion after TIE fighter sinks into sand
-Cut down Rey’s fight in marketplace (This ties into the next edit)
-No gag of Finn drinking water next to giant beast
-Other miscellaneous dialogue removal
-Remove entire pointless sequence of Finn talking to BB-8 and asking him to tell Rey the location of the Resistance base
-Remove line, “You got a boyfriend? Cute boyfriend?”
-Remove Rey telling Han that he did the kessel run in 14 parsecs
-Removal of entire Rathtar squid scene. It just cuts from Han talking to Lord Snoke
-Cut out Chewie being injured to keep continuity with previous cut
-Other miscellaneous dialogue cuts during scene with examining map
-Remove the reactions of the people watching the planets getting blown up
-Remove Maz’s line, “A good question, for another time.”
-Trim down and cut out shots and parts of the raid on Maz’s castle
-Re-insert X-Wings hovering over water shot from the trailer
-Cut down Kylo chasing Rey in the forest
-Cut out scene of Kylo thrashing around saber in rage
-Cut out more jokes with Finn
-Reinsert Kylo walking in forest shot from Teaser 1
-Finn’s fight with Kylo is much shorter, and downright pathetic. Finn lasts less than 40 seconds.
-Rey and Kylo’s fight sequence is put together (It doesn’t cut away to X-wings)
-Movie fades out on Luke’s face, not the helicopter shot

POSSIBLE MAJOR EDIT: The Republic planets are destroyed at the end of the movie, not the middle. This would removed Hux’s speech, but make the finale much more emotional.

Those are basically all the edits I plan to fully implement. No deleted scenes will be put into the edit, as the Timecode problem makes it impossible.

Now, this is where I NEED YOUR HELP. I may need need someone to help me remove the music from the 7.1 DTS audio mix, leaving only the vocals and sound effects. It doesn’t have to be perfect, but I REALLY NEED HELP WITH THIS to make this edit work.

I also need help with creating a new title crawl, something similar to what HAL9000 did for his prequel edits.

YOU WILL BE CREDITED IN THE FILM FOR HELPING OUT.

I would like to thank you for reading, and now, here are some test clips of what I’m putting together.

THESE ARE VERY VERY VERY EARLY TEST CLIPS. THE AUDIO IS NOWHERE NEAR FINISHED.

Wow, thank you all so much for your kind words! I may make the fight with the TR-8R trooper a little longer, but I still want Finn to suck at using the lightsaber. (For me, it’s kind of like Yoda using a lightsaber. He should’t have been using one in the first place) . If you liked this, you’ll enjoy my immolation scene music and a few other edits.

Also, in another thread, I read an idea for an edit where the destruction of the Republic planets would take place at the end of the movie, right when Han dies. After looking at the film again, that actually wouldn’t be too hard to do. The only downside is, you’d probably have to cut out Hux’s speech.

Welp, since I have no life, I spent all day working on sections of my edit. I will be making a separate topic page for it soon. Got my copy in the mail finally. Spent literally all day converting the files over to m2ts and getting all the audio channels from the 7.1 mix. Unfortunately, for my edit in particular, it’s going to be hard to replace all the music, as I’m going to have to go in manually and edit the dialogue and sound effects, as the music is present in pretty much every channel. You’d think by 2016, the music would be part of its own channel. God, that’s annoying. The sounds in the Blu-ray mix is definitely an improvement. The sound effects of the lasers and ships flying are fantastic, but the music still doesn’t sound that great. But way better than when I saw it in the theater.

So, because I have no life, I managed to quickly pull up these two preview clips, showing off the types of changes I will be making throughout. It also showcases the yellow color correction I was talking about a few days ago.

THESE ARE VERY VERY VERY EARLY TEST CLIPS. THE AUDIO IS NOT NEAR FINISHED.

What does this mean for aspect ratio? I kind of liked the idea of the non episodic films having a completely unique visual style, even down to the AR

I’m pretty sure, much like in this trailer, they are simply cropping the sides off so as to not make the image smaller when projected onto a 2.39:1 screen.

A while back there were also rumors, Disney is considering a limited 70mm film theater release. If those refurbished old-school 70mm projectors are still sitting around from The Hateful Eight release, a full 2.76:1 film print could be viable. I’d be so stoked if they did that. Seeing TH8 that way was an unforgettable experience for me.
Yeah, the roadshow experience for The Hateful Eight was unbelievable. Freaking loved every minute of it. Loved hearing the projector and the back and seeing the god-tier crisp detail on that film.

Looks WAY better than anything from The Force Awakens. I can excuse any use of nostalgia factor, because this movie does take place at the time of A New Hope. It’s different than just recycling ideas and making another Death Star. I’m excited for it! Gareth Edwards did an absolutely fantastic job with the 2014 Godzilla, and the shot of the Death Star casting a shadow on the Star Destroyers is just amazing. Really looking forward to his direction and seeing a real Star Wars movie.

Welp, time for me to buy a copy of the movie from Amazon so I can get started.

Going back to my decision to replace all the music in the film, I thought I’d accompany this piece from a Quentin Tarantino interview about my decision.

https://youtu.be/vXGUEjYCybA?t=6m25s
It skips to the part of the interview I’m talking about.

Music is supposed to drive the film and really build a connection with the scene it accompanies. With The Force Awakens, I think this is universally agreed on, while the soundtrack itself isn’t bad, or even it’s pretty good, it’s use in the film is awful. It’s hardly audible. It’s not present in the movie at all. There isn’t one scene in the film where the music really helps it. It’s a bland movie because of it’s mis-use of it’s otherwise pretty good score. That’s why I want to go forth with making my own sound mix. I could just upscale the sound of the already existing score, but the way the score is being used already doesn’t work. The music just doesn’t fit with what happens in the movie. The goal here in my edit, which I am hoping a lot of people enjoy, which is why I’m sharing the project, is the newly added music is to really help drive tense action sequences or serious dramatic moments.

After watching the film again, a couple times actually, I have decided this: The Rey interrogation scene I am keeping, but both Kylo rage scenes are most definitely being removed.

If you want to keep Kylo’s face as a reveal, you could re-work the scene so that the same dialogue occurs but he doesn’t take off his mask

That’s what I’m trying to figure out. I really want to keep his face as a big reveal of Han, so I’m not sure how I’m going to do it. I may not be able to, but we’ll see. I am excited though to start my other edits.

Well it seems as though your edit is fated to fade into obscurity.

Jeez, yeah, people are overreacting way too much to some of my changes. When I say cut down certain scenes, I mean literally cut out only like two or three seconds of the scene. Nothing major.

Also, I’m totally willing to discuss. That’s actually what I’ve been doing, and I’ve been also offering my reasons for why some edits will stay in no matter what.

I apologize if some of you have problems with my edit. I really do appreciate all responses and I look forward to be able to show you my final product.
