The cartoon was not cut for the French edit. The uncut animated segment contains the deleted "commercial" segment and slightly different musical cues and will be a separate feature on the disc.

Is that the reverse-audio clip that's been floating around in miserable quality? Were you able to get one better?

Only distantly related, I've wished for a long time that we could get a copy of the animated segment that includes the bits that only show on Lumpy's monitor. THAT would have been a fantastic extra on the Blu-rays.

Yes, that is the clip. I captured this copy from an unknown generation tape that is of a much higher quality than what was previously available and it does include the opening and closing animations that are shown on Lumpy's screen.

Disc one barely has space left for the menus once the WMAR commercials are edited in and the Spanish audio track is added, so I'm thinking of just including the French edit using the WHIO video on the bonus disc with the Uncut animated segment.

That makes much sense.

And I'm curious: how was the animated segment cut for the French broadcast?

What filters/settings did you use?

The file was saved using the Huffyuv codec and the only filter used was SpotRemover with all settings disable except for "color correction for yellowish film" to remove the slight yellow tint that the recording has.

All cleanup work that can be done has been finished in virtualdub and now I'm starting to sync the French and Spanish audio tracks. But, this is where I am running into a slight problem. The Spanish track is only missing a few seconds that can be patched but the French track is missing entire segments due to the edited nature of the original broadcast. Should I patch the missing parts with the English audio or should I leave the audio track empty in those parts?

This might have been mentioned elsewhere, but pay close attention to the DETAIL/NOR/EDIT switch.

EDIT mode still uses the internal TBC, but bypasses all other digital processing; therefore, the Soft->Sharp slider has no effect.

You'll want to use EDIT mode if you plan on doing a hardcore/purist preservation. Averaging multiple captures will significantly reduce the noise anyway.

If you want to use the Soft->Sharp slider (DETAIL or NOR mode), then that's fine, as it works rather well and whatever artifacts it produces (due to frame averaging) are hard to notice.

JEDIT: You might also want to consider using a Panasonic DMR-ES10 DVD recorder if the recording has any wiggly lines.

QUESTION: You're using the s-video output of the Panasonic AG-1980, right?

Thanks for the advice. I used NOR mode with the soft-sharp slider set in the middle and there are no major artifacts that I have seen so far.

As for using a DMR-ES10 in this case I don't know if it would help much as there are no wiggly lines present just going from the s-video output straight to the Hauppauge USB-Live2.

As for version 2 of WHIO, I will be doing the first transfer using the 1980 this week. I will also try running one of my WMAR tapes trough it to see if I can get decent quality copies of the commercials.

Hoping to get this out by Life Day, Tasjo?

The first and second captures are complete and the quality is so good I don't think it will be necessary to do a third. Right now I'm going through frame by frame looking for any flaws that need to be fixed or frames that need to be replaced. It should be done by the end of the first week of November at the earliest.

Is this the same source (before he sold it)?

Also, in an effort to not derail this thread, is there another to discuss VHS decks?

The source of that video is a recording from KIRO in Seattle, Washington. It was originally uploaded about three years ago and apparently re uploaded since then. I contacted the uploader when it was first put on youtube to see if he had a complete recording, but he said he no longer had the tape.

Here is a screenshot showing the station ID from the now removed animated segment that he had uploaded:

Also, if anyone has or knows where to obtain a copy of the WBNS-TV 10  Columbus, Ohio recording let me know as it may yield slightly better copies of the commercials

Tasjo, what is your price range for an AG-1980? It's getting harder to find one that hasn't been run into the ground as time goes by. And believe me, you don't want to end up with someone else's tape eater.

I can recommend the ebay seller I bought my last one from, and they service what they sell.

My price range is around the $200-250, but I may just have to bite the bullet and pay a little more for one that is guaranteed to work. 90% of the ones I have seen listed have mostly been trashed and I definitely don't want to end up with someone else's tape eater.

If you want.. I can do the whole job but for that I will need the VHS to transfer it, of course, I will have to get in contact with the owner to clarify the best to do this.

Sorry for this long post... but I just let you know that I can contribute with my knowledge and also the equipments.

Thanks to you all.

Indeed, there are a few of us with AG-1980s here on the forum.  So if you get stuck, I'm sure there are people here that can do a nice transfer.  Believe me, using a better deck makes a noticeable difference in quality.  Judging by what you have already gotten out of the SWHS tape, running it through a better deck is likely to make it clearly the best quality version yet found.

Thanks for the offers everyone, but I have a lot of other tapes that need to be transferred, so at this point I think it would be best if try to track down my own. But if all else fails I will definitely consider letting one of you transfer it the best way possible.

Definitely one of the best off air copies I've seen to date.  The image is very sharp, stable and not overly-saturated.  If its not an original recording, its a very good 1st generation dub. Don't know a lot about the HR-S7100U but it seems to have done a pretty good job.  Does it have a time-based corrector built in?

The HR-7100U does not have a TBC, but I am trying to track down a decent condition Panasonic AG 1980 for a reasonable price.

Well the quality is much better than I thought!

Could you please encode the second version with a much bigger bitrate? About 8MBps?

Version 2 will have a higher bitrate for both audio and video, though I'm still not sure what the best format to release it in would be. I'm leaning towards making it either a standard definition single layer Blu-ray or just a DVD-9. Which would everyone prefer?

I think most people would prefer the version with the station ID intact, as it gives some context to the original recording.  Plus, it's only on-screen for a very short time.

Version 2 will definitely have the station IDs left intact. The goal of version 1 was to provide a clean, generic source that could be used for other projects.

Out of curiosity, the "CBS Special Presentation" introduction... What preceded the actual start of the program?  Looks like a nice quality source.

It starts with a Wonder Woman/Incredible Hulk slide and an announcer saying that "Because of the following special programming Wonder Woman and The Incredible Hulk will not be seen this evening".

It definitely does have a slight edge over KCCI in terms of sharpness and doesn't suffer from the horrible over saturated reds of most copies of WMAR.

I'd really like to include the commercials in version 2, but the commercials from WMAR need serious color correction to blend with the actual show. Here is a comparison of the only commercial besides the Kenner commercial that was left.

WHIO on the left, WMAR on the right:

Recorded from WHIO Dayton, Ohio, this is an original first generation recording of the Star Wars Holiday Special on VHS. The tape was purchased from an ebay seller in Dayton, Ohio, who I believe may have been the original owner.

The recording has many rough edits at the commercial breaks, but is otherwise complete. The picture is sharp, color is not over saturated and is not overly dark.

Version 1 info:

  • 4.7 GB DVD-5 with no extras, menus, or alternate audio tracks.
  • Transferred using a JVC HR-S7100U S-VHS VCR and a Philips  DVDR 3390 DVD recorder with LSI chipset.
  • Rough edits patched and station IDs removed using KCCI, WCBS and the Vidtronics master (Note: Version 2 will NOT have the station IDs removed).
  • No sharpening filters or saturation filters applied as they are not necessary.

I plan to eventually do a Version 2 using a hauppauge USB-Live2 capture device once I acquire a Panasonic AG-1980.

Version 2 goals:

  • DVD-9 (possibly SD BD-25 to include both a raw and restored version of the capture) with menus, an early version of the animated segment with deleted “commercial” (have), archival commentary track (working on it), French audio track (have, but looking for better quality), and Spanish audio track.

I have a very slow upload speed so sharing it by torrent is out of the question for now, but if anyone is willing to upload this to myspleen or usenet PM me.

WCCO-FM Star Wars Stereo Simulcast Reel to Reel Recording (Released)
Time

This reel to reel tape was purchased on ebay and was advertised as being a audio only recording of Star Wars broadcast over Minnesota radio station WCCO-FM. The recording is not complete as it only runs thirty minutes and there is no way to prove if it actually is a copy recorded from a radio broadcast. The only thing that really stands out is the music at the beginning that fades into the 20th Century Fox fanfare.

Note: I don’t know if it is a fault of the tape or my reel to reel player, but the audio plays back at an extremely high rate. I fixed this in audacity by decreasing the speed by 48% as decreasing it by 50% made it sound to slow.

It appears to be an audio only copy of the 1984 CBS premier, based on the fact that WCCO 830 AM and WCCO-TV were, and still are, CBS affiliates. I will know for sure if this is the case once it arrives.
