audio isn't my stongest area, and the last thing I want to do is release a substandard 5.1 mix, just to say it is 5.1. So I don't know yet.

I've been editing in 5.1, so the capability is there if there is demand.

My preference would be to partner up with an audio guy who has experience mastering to 5.1.

UPDATED v0.4 Star Wars Opening Crawl After Effects Template SEE FIRST POST
Time

UPDATE: 09/16/2014

All the links below are dead. Someone uploaded the files to megashares: http://d01.megashares.com/dl/bwX4ssO/Taolars_SW_Crawl_0.4.zip

It should work fine with AE 6.5. But I haven't tried importing into newer versions. Let me know if you try it!

UPDATE 09/1/2008:

Version 0.4 is located here: Taolars_SW_Crawl_0.4.zip. See the included README file if you have any questions.

It now can output NTSC, PAL, and HD, the SW logo is now a vector graphic, and its easier to tweak colors, glow, text speed, and the tilt angle. I think it looks better too.

SD Video Example: SWCrawl_0.40_demo.avi . Note: The DIVX compression tweaked the colors and generally degrades the picture. See the still images below to get an idea of how it really looks.

HD Still Examples:
HD_Out _LOGO.jpg
HD_Out_CRAWL.jpg.
These are larger than most people's monitors, so if the edges of letters look jagged its because it was shrunk to fit your screen. Zoom in.

Let me know if you use it, and if your project gets released a mention in your credits would be nice, but not required.

Please PM me if you find any errors. Have fun!

ORIGINAL POST:
Here's a crawl template that I put together for another fan editor. It's pretty accurate, easily adjustable, and I included instructions. Feel free to use it to your hearts content. Just please drop me an email if you use it in a finished edit. And a mention in your credits would be nice, but not necessary.

Taolars_SW_Crawl_0.2.zip

And here's what it looks like:

testcrawldivx.avi

The Divx compression made some of the colors fluctuate as it fades away. The uncompressed version doesn't do that...

Have fun,

For compositing, I can't recommend After Effects enough. Its used my more professionals than any other program, and there's not much you can't do with it. There's kind of a steep learning curve, but if you start out with "Creating Motion Graphics Vol. 1" by Meyer, like I did, you can't go wrong.

For editing, I used to recommend premiere, but I'm really sick of that program. Still too many quirks, and Adobe doesn't seem to be willing to fix it. When I'm done with SoJ, I'll move on to something else. Maybe a Mac or Linux program. I heard final cut is good.

As for Audio, I use a free program called Audacity. But audio is not my strong point, so I don't know...

STAR WARS: EP IV 2004 REVISITED ADYWAN *1080p HD VERSION NOW IN PRODUCTION
Time
Adywan,

I admire your subtlety and attention to detail!

I have a pre-school age son that I've been waiting to show Star Wars to once he reaches the age I was when I first saw it, and I've been torn as to which version to show him. The Special Edition, which all his friends would have seen is too cartoony for me. But the original might be too bland for him. You've put together a Special Edition that is a perfect mix of the two, plus some. I'm in awe, and when my son turns 6, I'm sure he will be too.

Thanks!

Today I started working on the FX clip that I have been most worried about. I'm changing the text on something that is constantly in motion, changing direction, folding, slightly rotating, etc. I had several ideas on how to do it, but I really wasn't that confident that any of them would produce a seamless, professional result. There's too much motion blur for me to do any automatic tracking. And since this clip is integral to this fan edit, its really something that I've been worrying about. I've been procrastinating even attempting it since I started a year and a half ago. Back then I definitely didn't have the skills to pull it off.

I've been working on it for the last 5 hours, and just got to the point where I could partially render a half second of the clip, and I'm happy to say it's looking great! I still have probably another 12+ hours that I need to devote to it before it's perfect, but I'm so relieved that it's working that I had to tell somebody.

Back to work!

Are you using After Effects for the editing as well as the f/x, or is there another program you use to cut the video and/or audio tracks?

After Effects would make a terrible editor. I use Premiere, but only because it's adobe's editor, and I purchased the creative suite (photoshop, premiere, after effects, and illustrator). I'd ditch premiere in a second if I found an editor that integrated easily with those other products. It's given me a lot of headaches over the years, and Adobe prefers to let the forum suggest workarounds, than actually issue a patch. I'll probably drop premiere when I'm done with this project.

Info Wanted: Whats the overall view on the best fan edits ?
Time
As a general consensus, Magnolia Fan's edits of the eps 1 and 2 seem to be enjoyed the most. And they are great. I think they take care of most of the concerns you posted.

My favorite is a combination of all three movies called "Star Wars: Fall of the Republic" by blankfist. It's a drastic 4 hour edit. If I remember right ep1 is cut down to 20 minutes. But I liked the paces, and it took care of almost all of my problems with the movie.

Thanks for the encouragement. I have four more FX scenes (not counting the titles) that are left to do on disc 1. The scene I'm working on now is fairly simple, but time consuming. The other three are going to require skills that I don't have yet. I have put a lot of thought into ideas on how to accomplish them, but apart from a few 3d models, I haven't tried any of them yet. When I'm done with the FX for disc one, I'm going to master the audio (which will require me to get my hands on a CD of the original score, since I've been working with lower quality mp3s for the themes that aren't isolated on the official dvd). Then I'll continue work on disc 2 while disc 1 is being tested by various people.

Being a married man, with 4 year old son, running his own business, I don't have nearly as much time as I'd like to work on this. I envy the college students who can churn these projects out in a few weeks. But it's still my main hobby and I work on it at least once a week. I'm just finishing up an FX shot where I'm removing Otis from this scene: mst-otisbeforeDIVX.avi

It's taking a long time because Otis moves behind Ms. T as her arms flail about and the camera starts to dolly just as he enters the scene.

Here's what I've done so far: mst_otis1_render.avi

Ms. T is missing her feet, and the rest of the scene hasn't been matted yet. But I think I should have the rest of it done this weekend.

Any ideas on the frame work for the completed product?

Hi Lorang. Do you mean time frame? I'd love to have it done by Christmas, but I've proven myself to be such such a bad judge of how long it takes me to do FX work, that I'm not going to promise a date right now.
