Hey Taolar - any updates on the new template? I'm dong some HD-edits of the PT, and would like to get some new crawls on the go...

Thanks for doing this - my after effects skills are somewhat limited!

Solo21, can you email me some screen captures of your HD footage? I'm trying to figure out how to accurately letterbox it. Just one 1920x1080 jpg of a scene where the letterboxing is clearly visible, one of the original crawl, and one of the clear starfield before the crawl starts would be great. Email to taolar at gmail.com.

Thanks!

Indiana Jones IV

I have mixed feelings on the whole movie. Its got plenty of groan worthy moments, but for me most new action movies do too. Harrison Ford has definitely lost his spark. There's very little of his charisma present in this movie. The way he delivers his lines is pretty bland. He sounds bored whenever he talks. And the dialog in general isn't very fresh.

That said, it still has some fun, if over-the-top action. I'm glad they brought Marion back, even if she didn't have much to do or say. I think Shia did a fine job, unexpectedly. He and John Hurt were the only characters that brought much charisma to the screen.

In terms of an action movie, I didn't feel cheated out of my $10. But as an Indiana Jones movie, I'd definitely make it fourth on the list. And I wasn't a huge fan of Doom or Crusade.

I tried to watch this at a local theatre last weekend, but the projector was too bright, everything weas blown out, and I left to complain and get my money back. The manager told me that was how the movie was filmed. I didn't believe him and got my money back anyway.

So I tried it at a different theatre yesterday, and it was better, but still too bright, with a slight glow. Harrison's face was constantly over-lit. I figured they did that to hide Ford's wrinkles. But everything looked fake. It was very distracting, and looked nothing like the original three. And the bottom half of the screen seemed blurred, which I was able to confirm during the end credits.

Did anyone see the same things, or did I just experience a bad projection both times?

Adywan's right. Your two options are to either disable the "copy of [2dcrawl.ai] 4 glow" layer in the "2d crawl animated" comp (which will also remove the glow), or you can figure out why that and the "[2dcrawl.ai]" layer are out of sync and fix it.

Incidentally, a month ago someone saw this topic (apparently its become the top result if you google "star wars crawl template") and paid me to create an HD version with end credits for their Star Wars themed wedding. So, not only has this hobby finally made me some $$, but soon I'll be releasing a new version of the template, which will fix the above problem, be easier to use and customize for those not AE fluent, and will be easily output-able to HD.

ThrowgnCpr, if you have trouble, go ahead and send me your project files and I'll see if I can fix it for you. Although I don't have CS3.

STAR WARS: EP IV 2004 REVISITED ADYWAN *1080p HD VERSION NOW IN PRODUCTION
Time
Hey Adywan,

I had a showing of your NTSC DVD-5 version over the weekend for 10 people on a huge 8 foot wide projection system, and people loved it. There were actually no complaints over any of the changes you made.

But a few people, including myself, noticed that the audio gets slightly out of sync after they leave Tatooine, up until the destruction of Alderan. I know a couple other people on this forum mentioned noticing that a while back, but at that time I watched those scenes over and over again on my computer and it didn't seem out of sync.

Maybe it's only noticeable when the image was blown up so large and the movements of lips are that much more visible. Or maybe the problem is only on the center channel, which is why I never noticed it with my stereo headphones...?

I noticed it at about 55:10, starting when Han says "Go strap yourselves in..." Watch when he says "light speed". Han makes the "sp" sound with his lips after it was already said. I'm watching it on my computer now, running the ISO from my hard drive, with Media Player Classic, and I do notice it out of sync there, but the scene that follows seems synced to me. But watching it on that huge screen, with a nice 5.1 sound system, the dialog ran about 2 or 3 frames earlier than the video up until Alderaan blows up. It wasn't apparent to everyone, even after it was pointed out. But three people did notice it, without me bringing it up. Afterwards everything was in sync again.

Anyway, not a huge issue, but I thought I'd bring it up again in case you wanted to double check it before the DVD-9.

Superman by Taolar (Formally: Son of Jorel) WORKPRINT AVAILABLE
Time
160 frames, or just under 7 seconds.

I'm painting out two items, and maybe a third. I'm not an artist, so these are usually the toughest parts for me to get looking right. For me it's just about putting time and focus into it and trying to keep an objective eye. When I watch at the same 7 seconds over and over again, I can really pick it apart, and sometimes want to change things that probably shouldn't be changed. I think the frequent breaks are good for me, because when I get back into a scene, I can watch it fairly objectively.

I save the project files with the date in their name, so if I have to, I can undo what I did over the weekend, if its not working. And I use the undo button a lot. This project is my first real attempt to do these kinds of FX. And I have a lot of false starts.

The upside is there will be plenty of deleted scenes in the extras. :)

Alternative Star Wars OT MovieThon
Time
I'm throwing another Movie Marathon, and thought I'd invite you fine folk too:

The Alternative STAR WARS Original Trilogy MovieThon

Next Saturday, April 26th, at Chuck's theatre we'll be showing alternate versions of the Original Star Wars Trilogy.

Show up anytime after 2pm at 6820 F Hyde Park Drive, in San Diego, California. We'll have soda, beer and popcorn, comfy stadium style couch seating and a big ass projection TV with top of the line surround sound.

THE SHOWS:

3pm - Star Wars: A New Hope Revisited
by Adywan

This fan made version of the first Star Wars film not only fixes errors and technical limitations that should have been made in the official Special Edition, but also brings more realism to the Cantina scene, more action to the lightsaber duel, and completely overhauls the final deathstar battle to make it feel more like the action packed space battles that make up the rest of the Saga. The changes are so professionally done, and many times so subtle that they don't bring attention to themselves, but the several hundreds of mostly minor changes and fully re-mixed audio have a profound collective impact on viewers, causing them to feel they are re-living seeing Star Wars for the first time.

6pm - Building Empire
by Jambe Davdar

This unofficial documentary of sorts, incorporates on-set footage, alternate takes and angles, audio interviews, reconstructed deleted scenes, storyboards and other rare footage from various sources, and weaves them together with the original Empire Strikes Back movie, giving us a look "behind the scenes" unlike any official documentary thus far. This is the spiritual sequel to last years "Deleted Magic".

9pm - Return of the Jedi: Ewok-less
by Spence, with a few alterations by me

Imagine if George Lucas hadn't decided to steer the Saga toward the cute and cuddly. Imagine if the lesson he took from the success of Empire was that kids get serious and dramatic sci-fi, not just that kids love muppets. Imagine if the last film of the saga wasn't made for kids. This film attempts to imagine that, by not only cutting out every single Ewok, but also by removing the goofier dialog and sillier moments, and de-wimpifying Han Solo. This is Return of the Jedi for grown-ups.

As always, I'll be showing funny shorts in between the movies. Let me know if you plan on coming. And you're welcome to bring guests. No young kids please.
