Star Wars: 4K77 DNR-AI project v2.0 R6 - 2160p HDR

A 35mm STAR WARS digital restoration project

Notes on v2.0:

Processing: The master for 2.0 was processed through PHOENIX, kindfully williarob did this for me using my further tweaked masterfile i initially planned to release as v1.7.2, but after a short conservation with irishogrady and williarob i came to the conclusion what a big big fun it would be to go through this movie - frame by frame…
After i got the processed file back from Rob i began to restore all wiped away highlights and details, as there are e. g. laser bolts, shadows, reflections (especially on C-3PO and everything reflecting…), parts / shadows on clothes, stars, hairs, one-frame-only details and so on. Most of the space shots and shots with explosions / flying sparkles were cleaned up manually as PHNX tends to introduce flicker on stars or wiping those details away completley as it assusmes that it could be dirt or damage. On some shots a second manual cleanup pass was needed as PHNX also tends to “oversee” dirt on scenes with high motion.

Colors: v2.0 is almost a complete rehaul regarding colors (95% of the movie is corrected now). I tried to colormatch as many shots that differed before and to establish a more conform look throughout the movie (what was very hard here and there), including the use of many many Powerwindows.

Release-Notes:

For the initial work done and changes made to v1.x review the included README file.

Changelog v2.0 R6:

  • Automated cleanup using PHOENIX (thank you @williarob) and manually restored wiped away details afterwards where needed - frame by frame
  • Manual cleanup of some selected scenes, high speed shots, explosions and star fields where needed
  • Fixed the light leaking of some shots where needed
  • Further and almost complete redoing of the CC
  • Fixed some visual glitches between shot transistions
  • Fixed some background noise in the Trash Compactor shots with Han
  • Fixed a problem with power windows being visible on two particular Ben vs. Vader shots
  • Manual cleanup of deeper scratches, most of them on reel 4
  • Updated CC on some Tantive IV shots, e. g. Lea shooting with the Stormtroopers, space shots to red etc.
  • Fixed the misaligned CC on the Luke & C3PO conversation shot “You know of the Rebellion against the Empire?” on reel 2
  • Updated / redone the CC on the other Luke workbench & Ben´s hutt shots. Those were very tricky to do because the levels were shifting (due a bad deflicker of these shots in the scan itself), i tried my best to fix that and give the whole scenes a more conform look. A lot of power windows were used.
  • Manual cleanup of deeper scratches and black spot smearing on the “Uncle Owen! This R2 unit has a bad motivator” shots on reel 2
  • Some minor color adjustments and more manual dirt removal
  • Played around with the x264/x265 encoding settings for both versions and created a new and updated HD master from the updated 4K master
  • Some revised color corrections on some shots (e.g. canyon shot / arrival at Mos Eisley)
  • Additional manual cleanup of deeper scratches (e.g. last shot of Leia´s holograph at Luke´s workstead)
  • Regraded some shots for better conforming the given HDR colorrange (e. g. fixed blown-out highlights)
  • Replaced and redone a whole shot with one from the 4K77 2.0 master (thanks to Rob)
  • Removed now noticeable vertical white lines at the bottom and top on the first shot of reel 6 (X-Wing inside Yavin hangar)
  • Removed the vertical white lines at the bottom on the Lea interviewed by Vader shots on reel 3
  • Removed the vertical white line at the bottom on the Luke arrived back at the Sand Crawler and talks to Ben shot on reel 3
  • There was one visible glitch at a keyframe cut point because of bitrate jumping/ramping on the end of reel 3 in R5. This has been fixed
  • A lot more manual cleanup
  • Updated the x265 encoding parameters
  • This version is final

A note on how to watch this:

Copy the version you have downloaded to an external and fast USB-drive and attach it directly to your TV set. Most of modern TV sets are coming with integrated USB-interfaces and are supporting Matroska (*.mkv) media files.

As this project and it´s color correction was done on a calibrated display please make sure that you don´t have any postprocessing features activated (as flow framing, overscan etc.). To be sure set your TV to a suitable picture preset such as “THX”, “Filmmaker mode”, “Cinema mode” etc. The name of such a preset can vary from manufacturer to manufacturer, but they all set a near calibrated color preset and are disabling all unnecessary features of a modern TV set that prevent the audience on how this movie should be watched.

We had been waiting for the scanner to be adjusted to fix the focus problem. That has now been completed and scanning will begin again this week.
In Australia the kids get six weeks of school holidays for our summer, so end of December and all of January. I’m the primary carer so I’m pretty much snowed looking after the four kids, scanning should be completed within 2 weeks, still need to find the money to get the last reel done.

Will be posting more regular updates once school holidays are over, and hopefully temperatures drop under 40C/104F. It got up to 47C/116.6F, and our air-con was broken for three weeks. No fun!

I sent you a donation around Christmas, I hope it helps.
